Shining a spotlight on the undercurrent of creativity and cool in contemporary China. China’s place in the global community is changing.
Once viewed as the “world’s factory”, China’s resulting economic growth has allowed the country to shift rapidly from a production-led economy to one that is becoming dominated by consumers, both of tangible goods as well as new ways of thinking. Consequently, China’s productive output is now no longer limited solely to sneakers and counterfeit goods; an undercurrent has been brewing, which has le
d to a flurry of independent thought and creative output which seeks to counter the traditionally held views about the Middle Kingdom. Hao Xiang seeks to give a stage to these new ideas, to provide an alternative to the more commonly presented views of China featured in popular media, and to shine a spotlight on the undercurrent of creativity and cool in contemporary China. The name Hao Xiang itself is multi-dimensional, and was picked for its diversity of meaning depending on the context, and how you choose to interpret it:
好香: delicious; fragrant; pleasant;
好想: to desire;
好象: to appear as; and
好像: to be like. This, to us, is a representation of the many facets that China currently exhibits. Hao Xiang is a blog based out of Melbourne, Australia and was founded in January 2015. The Hao Xiang logo was designed by the fantastically talented Kim Anderson, who is based in Wellington, New Zealand. You can see more of her work on her Behance profile here: https://www.behance.net/kimanderson.
