Jens Brockmeier, a contributor to our issue on Lisbon and Memory, who has also contributed to our upcoming issue on Berlin and Trust (being a Berliner himself) will launch his new book 'Beyond the Archive' (Oxford University press) tomorrow. In this book, Brockmeier, a psychologist and elegant writer, questions our notions of how memory works, individually, culturally, technologically and biologically. If you're in Paris tomorrow, come and help us lauch it with him.

Urban Zorko: Ljubljančani so ustvarjalni, a jim manjka norosti

We're in the media again: our co-editor Urban talks about Cacao Europa in an interview for the biggest and most serious Slovene daily, Delo. The interview revolves around the theme of Ljubljana, the city that will be in the focus of our fourth issue, right after Berlin. (Ljubljana is also a place where Cacao Europa is printed ;))

La Générale : dernière station avant terminus ?

La Générale Nord-Est is where Cacao Europa is put together, a job that takes days of patient pouring over a screen by Julien Imbert. If it weren't for La Générale, our existance would be that bit more difficult. Supporting them means supporting culture. Because we need that more than we need another cinema in the neighbourhood...

Fuites et miroirs soniques

The latest issue of Les Cahiers européens de l'imaginaire launched last night in Paris! Here's a playlist of the sound of the baroque..

Not far from Lisbon, there is a place populated by savage beasts. There, during the course of a day filled with humidity, these chimera that surrounded me came to life. It is one of these places where the unconscious surfaces to transport you far from the terrestrial surface. In between the interior and exterior eye, these beings grip your imagination and lead you to the otherwise impenetrable watery depths - if you accept the magic.

Team profile number 9: Adam Bargroff. Doctor Adam is here to keep us on the straight and narrow - never fear! Born and bred in London town Adam recently finished a PhD at Queen's in Belfast, where he wrote a dissertation about Irish poetry (that of McGahern, to be precise). We're glad to have him as a guarantor of good style!

(While we're being precise, McGahern worked in prose, although he is considered by many to be the writer of prose-poems, the highest accolade possible for a writer. - Ed.)

Outubro 50

He would say “man changes in death, once dead, he continues to die during a good couple of years. To this day, I have only witnessed one exception, I think, they say she’s a saint. Time has not eaten her up. She’s never visited. Today she was a dark spiracle in the middle of the other small lights. The others degrade themselves at their own leisure, they deliver themselves without limit to the pleasure of exile.” He would continue, “they are excessive in the management of their propriety and their body, they choose the best of themselves for the cape of eternity. They have, as rooms, tombstones and drawers. This Lisboeta gem has his tombstone paid for!”

Cacao Europa: a new international review of art and culture.

Lors de l'aventure Cacao Europa, l'irrationnel, le surréel et la magie existent. Dans notre recherche, nous les prenons en compte pour vous raconter ce qu'il se passe vraiment, sous vos yeux.

In the adventure of Cacao Europe, the irrational, the surreal and magic exist. In our research, we don't ignore but acknowledge them so as to reinterpret what's going on in the world we live in.

Team profile number 8: this dude is our partner in crime, a co-producer of the Kickstarter video, a man that travelled to Istanbul on a moped and drove all the way from Europe to Delhi by himself (escaping prison en route). Marko Kumer Murč is a filmmaker, a producer, a relentless adventurer who finds himself in the strangest places wherever he goes. He holds a PhD in the undergrounds scene of Ljubljana (keep an eye out for this) and keeps helping us get lost as we go.

Cacao Europa: a new international review of art and culture.

Thanks to all your support, we have entered the territory of "stretch goals". So, since we have until mid-day on Thursday (Paris time) to keep fundraising, lets do this!

STRETCH GOAL 1:

Lets make it to 18,000 Euro to help support translation and proofreading for the next two issues of Cacao Europa!

This is hard work that requires years of education, professional competence, and discipline! These fine people don't get the recognition that comes with being published as do our artists, writers and illustrators. We'd like your help to pay them for hard work, commitment, and patience that until now has come from passion alone!

It would seem strange to single out any one woman for praise today. Looking through the pages of Cacao Europa, it is immideately obvious that this entire endeavour wouldn't exist but for the passion and dedication of the women who have given it shape, form and substance.

Luckily for us all, they continue to do so :)

We made it! Thank you EVERYONE!

Still got four days to go - so there's still time to join the journey!!

Laëtitia Laguzet

Team profile number 7: Is alchemy a thing of the past? Not in the case of our review - not only is cacao's name made of it, but we have alchemists in our midst! And none are more adept than Laetitia Laguzet. She’s a quiet being at first sight, but beneath that calm lies an extraordinary thinker, a woman of vision and a creator. She imagined a special ritual to give birth to the first issue of Cacao Europa under the spring rains of Paris, wrote an extraordinary text, and exhibited her work in Lisbon in September with us. We are proud to have her and her vision on our journeys! Follow her at http://www.laetitialaguzet.fr/ and cacaoeuropa.com

Team profile number 6: this fellow is indeed a bridge between cultures! Francisco Guerra Pires has helped source many important contributions for the Lisbon issue of Cacao Europa - and not only that - he translated numerous texts, being flawlessly fluent in both Portuguese and in English. We’re glad he’ll be staying on with us as co-ordinating editor, because it’s what he does best. Francisco is a cosmopolitan flâneur, he never ceases to enjoy his city by endlessly walking its hills, stairs and valleys, so much so that it might surprise him that he ends up back in Graça, having imagined that he's in London, Dakar or Hong Kong
