No Cultural Authority Revisiting classic and not-so-classic albums and movies No Cultural Authority is a podcast founded by two people who wanted to talk too much about music.

Every month we look at albums celebrating an anniversary any time in the last 60 years. There are usually 2-3 episodes per month.

I forgot how much I loved Gram Parsons

Obviously there have been no new episodes in a really long time.

I was working on something.

If you like the Beatles, check it out.

But, especially, if you hate the Beatles, check it out.

Popular music in the UK and the United States was a bunch of disparate genres, performed by amateurs, often to audiences of teenagers – or adults who weren't exactly discerning, in the case of folk music and mainstream American pop music – and whose musicians didn't have much to do with each oth...

Star Wars is the best Wilco album of the teens and it's not really close

16/08/2022

Apparently all this time my favourite Wilco album is A Ghost is Born.

21/04/2022

Whenever it goes full doo w*p, Freak Out! is basically bizarro Pet Sounds

05/01/2022

I'm a Hail to the Thief truther

30/12/2021

One reason I love Aladdin Sane is that it is such a showcase for both Mike Garson and Mick Ronson. I'm not sure Ronson has ever sounded better

Everyone who does not know how great Brian Eno was in the mid '70s is really missing out. Some of my favourite music of the entire decade.

22/12/2021

To me, The Wall is very clearly a prog rock album. But some say it's art rock.

What say you?

29/10/2021

"A Certain Kind" by The Soft Machine is one of my favourite ballads of all time, in part because of how it subverts our expectations that the big chorus is coming and just f***s with us for like 15 seconds

People go on and on about how Television are a "post punk" band.

They formed in 1973. The Ramones hadn't even formed yet and wouldn't release their debut album until March or April 1976.

Marquee Moon came out in February 1977. You know what hadn't come out yet in February 1977? The Clash's self titled debut and Never Mind the Bo****ks (among many other UK punk albums).

How can a band that was around at the birth of punk and releasing music during the height of punk - music that sonically doesn't fit what we usually define as "post punk" - be "post" punk?

20/07/2021

Why do I know all the hits from Woodface?

Only one of them was a Top 10 hit in Canada. I was 9 when the album came out.

15/07/2021

Do the Geto Boys just sound slowed down? Or is there something wrong with the rip?

June 1996 Anniversaries and June 2001 album Anniversaries

There are some people who think Kris Kristofferson is the Greatest (English-language) Songwriter of All Time. (The GSOAT?)

I think that's a bit of a terrible take, but I do think they could do worse. He's certainly a very good songwriter and perhaps among the best of his age.

But his producer and the industry were not doing him ANY favours when he first recorded. Much like with Townes Van Zandt, his early solo recordings have a preposterous number of instruments on them.

Nashville is a stupid, stupid place.

I don't know Muse.

But that lead singer sure wishes he was Thom Yorke on their debut album.
