Into the Snow - Snowpocalypse (2012)

Seattle collapses under two inches of snow, citizens abandon each other in the face of resource competition and venturing outside without a gas mask invites certain death. It was somewhat snowy.

Easttown (2001) - Daniel Easton on bass, Brett Hopkins on drums.

I'm going uptown
On the downtown train
I'm goin eastbound
On the western lane

Never want to see
This city
Now I'm here
Seems so gritty

Pass on the left
Line on the right
Never want to see it
In the daylight

I'm going downtown
On the uptown train
I'm goin westbound
On the eastern lane

Never want to feel
This pity
I can see
The terms ain't pretty

Been this way
Unfair to you
Got a hill of beans
You might kill for two

I don't want to think about it
I don't want to see it in my head every day
I wanna sing about it
Take a deep breath and blow it away

Then everything changed
On that beautiful day
The sky would never look that way
Again

Everything changed
Only the path remained
Never would come a day just like
The end

The skies were cloudless
You could see for miles every way
Disguise surrounded them
Never could tell by the things they say

Then everything changed
On that beautiful day
The sky would never look that way
Again

Everything changed
Only the path remained
Never would come a day just like
The end

American Style (2001 - Solo Acoustic)

Dedicated to Johnny Spann, the first US casualty in the war in Afghanistan.

I'm going to Afghanistan
It's there I'll make my final stand
Like Johnny Spann and everyone
Who loved him

I know you may not understand
I find myself the kind of man
To cross the line in the sand
For something

This is war, American style
Nightmares come of age
Deliver me from rage
This is war

The target looks like every man
I see him in the market stand
I could take him now
If I'm not wrong

Before he gets to Pakistan
I'll track him through the mountains and
He will give me just one
Reason to be strong

This is war, American style
Nightmares come of age
Deliver me from rage
This is war

Winter's come, it bites my hands
Like every day I've walked these lands
I've found another reason
For a man's revenge

With every shot I've made my stand
So many men so much demand
I'll never leave, I've joined the band
Until the very end

This is war, American style
Nightmares come of age
Deliver me from rage
This is war

Face to face, hand to hand
Fighting for the promised land
Every target, every man
Squeeze and go

I look at him and his demands
I know he'll never understand
I've always had the upper hand
He will not know

This is war, American style
Nightmares come of age
Deliver me from rage
This is war

The moment Martin received the signal on his phone he recognized the location on the map. It was on the walkway southwest of the Bremerton naval base, an approach that afforded a view of a constant parade of battleships docked for service cloaked in shrouds of tarp. The maintenance was typically scheduled at night, visible around the bay as the glow of spotlights & blowtorches cast the silhouettes of the ship’s majesty against the night sky...

The Mistress (Etherati / 2011)

It's time to see the mistress
Get down on your knees
You don't want to miss this
Can't do what you please

When you see the mistress
Tell her what you need
She won't be the witness
She might let you bleed

The mistress is calling
I can't resist

It's time to please mistress
She will only tease
Nevermind your business
Bind you up and leave

Pray before the mistress
Pray for what you need
Don't expect forgiveness
For all your wicked deeds

The mistress is calling
I can't resist

Never fear the mistress
Leave behind your sleaze
She won't mind your distress
She'll put you at ease

When you leave the mistress
When you feel appeased
You may have an interest
In mistress as you please

The mistress is calling
I can't resist

A rare victory, eight years later. I've been blocked from ad compensation and shadow-banned on YouTube since 2012. When I spruced up my channel last week I discovered they had a new appeals process to reinstate accounts. I filed a new appeal and included emails from the vendor that ripped me off.

Just got this email:

Thank you for clarifying your situation. We have reviewed your appeal and have reinstated your account, effective immediately. There will be a delay of up to 48 hours before ads start displaying on your site(s), mobile app(s), or YouTube channel(s) again.

With 145 tracks on my Soundcloud page including 77 radio shows and live takes it's impossible to know what to listen to and you have to scroll forever to find it. Nobody has the time for that.

Go straight to the Dog House, mister. My best 40 tracks of shredded meat. Over two hours of no scrolling, just hit play. Rock, metal, blues, love songs, flamenco, a shot of jazz opera, even a saxophone solo. Lots of solo guitar. Some cows. One mountain.

And then I realize
What I had to say
[ Nothing ] - Tiny Monsters

There is some helpful guidance in this article with one significant omission. The one thing you should always ask someone who is bipolar if you feel they are demonstrating agitation is this:

"How are you feeling?".

Agitation comes in two forms. Mania results in a critical lack of sleep. I've gone for three weeks straight with less than 30 minutes of sleep every other day. Your nerves get shot, your cognition declines and your mood becomes volatile. Even though you feel you don't need to sleep, you do. You weep and will experience audio hallucinations, then visual hallucinations and possibly delusions. This is a very precarious state of mind because you can literally stroke out, have a heart attack or say or do something terribly regrettable. The English language does not have the words to express that level of volatility. The closest is probably "dangerous".

Ad verecundiam.

The second kind of agitation comes from depression. Escalating tensions, social stigma, chemical dependency and other comorbidities, the economic and professional consequences of living with a genetic and progressive mood disorder with statistically poor outcomes can yield unrepentant anger. You know that you are facing an inevitable fate and there's nobody to blame but yourself. But your ability to correct course with will and self-determination like the neurotypical population collapses into compulsion, shame and hopelessness.

Also very dangerous. Very, very dangerous. That's why bipolar cohorts are 10x more likely to kill themselves than the control population. A substantial source of the disease burden in bipolar disorder is su***de-related. Researchers estimate that between 25% and 60% of individuals with bipolar disorder will attempt su***de at least once in their lives and between 4% and 19% will complete su***de. Stated another way, 90% of the population that commits su***de suffers from a mood disorder.

However bipolar patients are no more likely to inflict violence on someone else, in fact they are less likely. They are by nature extremely emotionally sensitive and often demonstrate comparatively rare qualities of empathy and creativity. That's why asking such a simple and compassionate question can lead to a moment of introspection and intervention.

Ask them if they are okay. Ask them if they need to go to the hospital.

I don't always know when I'm sick and mostly I'm not. But my friends and family will tell me when I'm being a jerk. And that's the first sign. Sensory phenomena are end-stage disease progression indicators that are not present in the vast majority of patients having an episode. I drew an unfortunate card from that hand of fate but it's not typical. I don't own a gun, never will, and I am not a violent person. Not once. That is typical. But nobody knows when they're delusional, not even you, which is why compassionate engagement is the best mitigation.

People with bipolar disorder can be successfully treated and they spend most of their lives in a neurotypical spectrum of behaviors even as they're writing their masterpiece or painting the starry night. So if you ask them straight to their face and demonstrate that you care about them, avoid terms like drunk or crazy to shame them, they will surprise you. If you suspect they are delusional ask them to analyze and explain their own behaviours from two weeks ago when they were neurotypical. Compare and contrast. And then offer to bring them to the hospital or call them an ambulance.

I've personally done this 5x for friends and my friends and family have done it for me. In each case I acknowledged that I was sick and a danger to myself. Not to anybody else. And in each case the patient was sedated for a couple days so their neurotransmitters could reset and restore some emotional equilibrium, then went on about their lives. Alive.

That's the goal. One simple question. Don't argue with them, it's pointless. Listen. Hang up the phone if you have to. But they will remember you called, and you could save their life.

It's been 7 years since I had the opportunity to work with Sabrina Pena Young on Liberteria and I just watched it again tonight. It's holding up even better than I could have expected in our new dystopian reality.

The animation is akin to a series of video-game cutscenes with each panel comprised of impressionistic imagery. The entire libretto is presented on screen in a comic book font so unlike many operas you don't have to guess at the lyrics, and it renders what would otherwise be a potentially maudlin topic in an approachable format.

Brilliant. Spawned a cult following and a TED talk. The first science fiction, virtual opera. It took something like two years. I shared the role of Simeon with Perry Cook, an actual opera singer, bearing witness to the emotional dichotomy of a conflicted character who eventually attains absolution. A teenage girl as the hero & direct vector to our new era of female empowerment.

An addict father grieving the loss of his daughter seeking absolution and a return to his younger self to reclaim insufferable loss in the midst of dystopia. Anti-hero. Life imitates art.

Can't wait to work with her again. We'll get there. I know she's been busy, you know having babies and stuff. Also in the libretto, along with apocalypse, assassination, a post-American world and microdrones.

- Emergent

This is the primer. I wrote it in 2009, it's a mashup of autobiography, character study, narrative, dialog and scenic direction.

It's the first chapter in a cautionary tale of artificial intelligence, mania and addiction. It ropes in global politics, naval warfare and the weaponization of information as a tool of violence.

It includes a shot of family guilt, a river of tequila and a shotgun. The star of the show is a three day old emergent toddler hellbent on being the only one on the planet. He's using his father as his surrogate to employ his own weapons of mass destruction with the boy scout's oath. Leave no trace.

Introducing Dr. Martin Sawyer.

Daisy by Rango \m/~

i used to have a rabbit, come running up on here
i'd wake up in the morning and scratch between his ears
brew us up some coffee, take dobro love outside
he'd run away until i played his favorite kind of slide

when every song's a circus, imagine how you'd hear
days turn into weeks turn into months turn into years
this just aint my journey, it's not my kind of ride
now i'm coming home alone, my rabbit gone and died

daisy in the meadow
won't you come home to me
i've loved you since the day we met
beside the inland sea

i never wrote you letters
i never sent a box
i only wrote you love songs
the only song i've got

i used to have a mortgage, went shopping all the time
then they turned the lights out, i choked on my last dime
couldn't afford no coffee, couldn't afford my ride,
got busted by the repo man each time i went outside

i never paid my tickets, i couldn't make no bale
if tax man come, run rabbit, run, no passing go, no sale
when luck just ain't your measure, you take it up in trade
i'm all runout like romeo on juliet's poison blade

daisy in the meadow
won't you come home to me
i've loved you since the day we met
beside the inland sea

i never wrote you letters
i never sent a box
i only wrote you love songs
the only song i've got

i wish i had my rabbit, i wish i had my girl
i'd play for her and sing my song for satin, lace, and curls
but all i've got's this dobro, some mojo and some wine
waiting for the day i get to finally call her mine

i'm thinking that she loves me, but wish i had a job
maybe do some laundry, quit living like a slob
don't think i need no botox, wrinkles are just fine
but not so good with rabbits is where she draws the line

daisy in the meadow
won't you come home to me
i've loved you since the day we met
beside the inland sea

i never wrote you letters
i never sent a box
i only wrote you love songs
the only song i've got

It’s not on a map. There is no map. It’s at the crossroads, and it’s a long way from home. The lagrange point between ill repute and honesty. Bring your axe and your story, morning glory, and the Zither may give you a song. Or take your head [ed: too flowery].
