“Museums haven’t gotten their due place in India. We have been surrounded by art for generations but somehow the connection seems to have snapped. The mission at MAP is to re-establish that connection and make it relevant for today’s youths rather than it being just about history or the past," says Abhishek Poddar, Founder and Trustee, Museum of Art and Photography (MAP), Bengaluru. "We are doing things that are interactive and we are using a fair amount of technology; we hope that it would appeal to the younger audience.” The museum opened physically for the public for the first time on Saturday, February 18, with 60,000 artworks ranging from classical art to popular culture on display across four exhibitions. The artworks included LN Tallur’s sculptures in the Chirag-e-AI (Lamp of Artificial Intelligence) exhibit, and painter and photographerJyoti Bhatt’s collection of photographs, including portraits, traditions, depiction of rural life and abstractions. The exhibition also features MAP’s permanent collection of artworks by Jamini Roy, M F Hussain, Bhupen Khakhar, Mrinali Mukherjee, Arpita Singh and Ravindra Reddy. Poddar’s personal collection of 7,000 artworks gave rise to the idea of MAP in December 2020. "I realised that it was unfair to have it all at home or enjoyed by a few people. This is when we decided to open it up and share it and thus the seed for the museum was born,” said Poddar.

There is something almost painterly about Vipul Kumar’s approach, echoed in his perfectly sculptural objects that run the gamut from lyrically beautiful to arrestingly thought provoking. One of India’s most revered artists working in both stone and ceramics, sculpting is the language in which he can communicate his observations of the world. His work is the epitome of the subtle, the understated and the powerful all at once. Though the material itself is important, equally crucial is Kumar’s openness to being led by his own intuition: he allows himself to be guided by what he sees, dreams and feels. “I do not work for any mission. Art is an article of faith for me, it is my life,” he explains. Kumar says injustice in society makes him sad. “I work to protest this injustice. Social circumstances inspire an artist like me. I firmly believe that the insatiable human greed is the reason behind the distortion of nature. These things move me,” he says. “As it is a bit difficult to express these feelings in stones, which is a suitable medium to express the subconscious, adopted ceramic as clay offered more possibilities allowing me to communicate the totality of my observations. Stone gradually takes a form and transports you to the state of trance. I refine my consciousness through my art.” Kumar says his work is essentially about deconstructing traditional ceramic practices, so he creates really rough, unconventional forms because he’s looking at contemporary reality. “If nature itself is disappearing, what is left of man?” he asks.

Bengaluru gallery KYNKYNY is hosting Asrama, a retrospective that explores the remarkable artistic journey of renowned collagist, G Subramanian, spanning over 50 years of his life and career. ‘Subra’, as he is fondly called, is best known for his vibrant, part-indigenous, part-contemporary collages moored in Hindu mythology and spirituality. On display are his rarely seen, early collages charged with rawness, eroticism and the intertwining figures of primeval men and women.
The exhibition not only looks back, but looks ahead as well, and culminates in a collection of exciting new works that represent a departure from Subramanian’s established style, tone and themes. The exhibition continues till December 31. So you have time till end of the year to celebrate one of India's most popular collage artists, and view works from the many stages of his career. In fact, Subramanian hosted his first solo exhibition in this gallery and the show was sold out. “This experience encouraged me to move forward in the artistic field. Namrata Radhakrishnan from Kynkyni Art Gallery promotes my art, which is a big boost for my artistic career and it also helps me to concentrate completely on my work,” he says.

Contemporary artist Jitish Kallat returns to Mumbai gallery Chemould Prescott Road for his solo exhibition Otherwhile, 25 years since his debut solo at the gallery in 1997. To commemorate this extraordinary moment, the gallery opened the exhibition on that very date, the 4th of December 2022. Writing about the show, the gallery communique mentions Otherwhile is an assembly of various themes and ideas that have stayed consistent through much of Kallat’s work, some of which trace back to his early days in the 90s. Over the years, Kallat has created a vast body of work that situates itself at the intersections of science, philosophy, history, mathematics and natural geometry. This exhibition brings together a cross section of his vigorously diverse practice: a monumental wallpaper of drawings, large paintings, freestanding double-sided photographic works and sculpture that materializes distant cosmic phenomenon in three dimensions. The exhibition derives its title from Kallat’s most recent photo-work Otherwhile. Rendered on glass are his notational drawings from the nineties, that fuelled some of his earliest artistic intuitions. These are juxtaposed with found images of ‘forced perspective’ where perception is distorted by adjusting the space and distance between two objects, creating an optical illusion. Otherwhile is at once playful and confessional; a reflection on intuition and inference, on the artistic constraints of trying to seize fundamental truths through the limited tools of form and phenomenon.

artsoullifemagazine-In a 2010 interview to The Indian Express, late S. H. Raza categorised his art into three distinct phases. He said, “There was the initial phase when | was still learning the nuances of line and colour. The second phase began in the 1950s when | moved to France. That is when | did a lot of landscapes, but I found something missing in my art. That is when | went into isolation and started looking at Indian iconography in the 1970s. I travelled a lot across India, including the Ajanta caves and Banaras.”

artsoullifemagazine- Young Goan artist Tamsin Noronha, who lives at Dona Paula, uses the washed up garbage from the local beach to create colourful murals, installations and other mixed media artwork. "While feeding my tribe of stray dogs on my local beach, I kept on picking up garbage over a period of time to dispose of responsibly. While doing this I would keep aside the colourful items such as bottle caps, sea glass and chappals for the art,” says Tamsin, who did her bachelor’s in fine arts from Art Academy Minerva, part of Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen, The Netherlands.
“My art is mostly colourful, visual and dramatic. It’s to make people think, to transport them to a different world where anything is possible, to brighten up their day in difficult times and to bring awareness to social and environmental issues as well,” says the artist. "With my work and practice I want people to think about where their garbage goes and raise awareness about reusing and recycling. Our mindset needs to change about how we use and discard plastic, especially if it's single-use plastic; this is now more relevant than ever before." Her beach art journey started with temporary installations on the beach where she would take all the items back home and frame them. She then started making mosaic work from cut-up footwear and held workshops for kids who create wall hangings from the trash. "I aesthetically arrange these finds by colour and in a shape according to the client*s preference. I find that most people want to have a part of Goa in their homes and unfortunately plastic has become a part of our beaches," she adds.
