Mikah Blackwell has signed for Scotts Lakers St Paul’s for the 2024/2025 national league season. A native of Norfolk in Virginia, he is a graduate of the Arizona Christian University and he helped the ACU Firestorm reach the quarter-finals of the NAIA National Tournament and win their third straight regular season GSAC Championship in 2022/23.
Blackwell (pictured) was also named the GSAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year in that season.
Standing at 6’6”, his all-round game can see him play both inside and outside with his athleticism being his strong point.
His contribution at the defensive end is highlighted by his inate blocking ability and his frequent double digit rebounding stats.
St Paul’s supporters of a certain generation may recall the great Terry Smith in his pomp and comparisons may well be drawn between them, given Blackwell’s agility under the boards.

The Kerry Senior Club Championship final between Dr Crokes and Di**le will be played on Sunday, September 1 at Austin Stack Park, Tralee.
The throw-in is scheduled for 3.30pm and in the event of a draw at full time, extra time will be played.
If the sides are still level at that stage, there will be a replay.
Supporters can expect a great clash with some of the top names in Kerry on show, including Tony Brosnan and Gavin White for Dr Crokes and Paul Geaney and Tom O’Sullivan for Di**le.

Kerry FC almost pulled off what would have been the upset of the season when they forced League of Ireland Premier Division hotshots Bohemians to a penalty shootout in their FAI Cup third round tie at a packed Mounthawk Park in Tralee this afternoon.
Tenacious Kerry twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw and not even extra time could separate the sides.
In-form Ryan Kelliher (pictured) notched another glorious brace - one in each half - to add to his impressive collection and, after this, the talented 23-year-old former Killarney Celtic striker will most certainly be attracting the interest of the big club scouts.
Kerry missed two spot-kicks in a row in the dramatic shootout and Bohs converted their four to advance and although the home side will be disappointed having got so close to what would have been a sensational result, they can reflect on this performance with an enormous amount of pride.
Dr Crokes and Di**le are preparing for a big battle in the Kerry Senior Club Championship final, following their respective victories over Rathmore and Kenmare Shamrocks at the weekend.
A Paul Geaney inspired Di**le fought back to sn**ch the win while Dr Crokes, for whom Mark O’Shea (pictured) excelled, had done enough earlier in the game to overcome a late two-goal burst from Rathmore.
In the Intermediate Championship last four, Fossa will play Laune Rangers while Glenbeigh/Glencar face Austin Stacks.
Paudie Clifford inspired Fossa to a great win against a fancied Kerins O’Rahilly’s while Glenbeigh/Glencar surprised Beaufort in their quarter-final.
Austin Stacks proved too strong for Killarney Legion while Laune Rangers edged out Glenflesk in a real thriller.

Fine Gael’s Teddy O’Sullivan Casey and Independents Podge Foley and Dan McCarthy have all been elected in the Kenmare electoral area. They made it through in the final count of the two-day marathon at the Killarney count centre shortly after 10 o’clock this Monday night. Damien Quigg of Sinn Féin was edged out in the battle for the last seat and the three successful candidates will now join Johnny Healy-Rae (Ind), Michael Cahill (FF) and Norma Moriarty (FF) on the new-look council. Ger Healy - the legendary Singing Jarvey from the Gap of Dunloe - didn’t need much persuasion to give a rousing rendition of ‘’How can you buy Killarney’ at the presentation of prizes for the Killarney St Patrick’s Day parade at the International Hotel on Tuesday night. He was with the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club and he was part of a group called forward to accept the award for the best overall entry, the Seán O’Keeffe perpetual trophy in memory of a former Mayor of Killarney who spearheaded the annual parade for many years.
Newly crowned All-Ireland intermediate football champions, Rathmore, had to share the spotlight with a happy young fan at their victorious homecoming celebration on Monday night. The parish turned out in force with a pipe band, streets lined with colourful supporters, flags, banners and even a couple of pranksters waiting to pelt the players with snowballs as they were paraded on the back of a lorry. But, perhaps, the most rousing cheer of the night was reserved for talented local schoolboy Jamie Cronin who took to the stage in Rathmore Community Centre to deliver a powerful poem in tribute to the players and management. He made mention of every game played on the way to the final, mentioning the individual and collective effort put in, and it was the perfect welcome home for the men who are the pride of the parish.
A bumper crowd, a pipe band and a fall of snow greeted the triumphant Rathmore squad and management as they returned hint to a rousing welcome this Monday night. Hundreds of people lined the streets and packed the local community centre to celebrate the impressive All-Ireland intermediate championship victory. Passionate speeches, raucous cheering and song marked the occasion and young schoolboy Jamie Cronin stole the show with a poem he wrote for the new All-Ireland champions.
It got a little eerie along the corridors and in the classrooms of St Oliver’s National School in Killarney but it was all well worth it in the end when the teachers and pupils worked together to produce a truly spook-tacular Halloween video. The creative genius behind the Pranksters Paradise production was teacher and accomplished musician Noel O’Sullivan who worked closely with another gifted local musician Óisin O’Connor on the production with some top tips and creative input from video specialist Kieran Healy. The pupils delivered their own unique version of the smash hit Gangsta’s Paradise by American rapper Coolio – with the lyrics specially adapted to suit the Halloween season. Not even principal Colm Ó Súilleabháin – in his favourite Batman costume – could escape the clutches of the marauding ghouls and witches and he paid a high price for his reluctance to part with some Halloween treats he was hiding under the desk. The short video features some incredible special effects including birds of prey on fire, terrifying but superb costumes a d spooky sights in the dense woodlands. Everyone dressed up on the day and, in exchange for swapping their school uniforms and teacher attire, they all donated €2 to Eddie Sheehy’s Kenya Education Project.
Killarney ground to a brief standstill just after 4 o’clock this afternoon when over 100 motorbikes, accompanied by a fleet of Garda vehicles with sirens blazing, whizzed through the streets. The colourful parade, featuring participants from 29 nations, was held to coincide with the Blue Knights organisation five-day international conference in the town. It involves mainly retired police officers and law enforcers from around the world who share a passion for motorcycles. Also on parade, in a fleet of squad cars, were 16 Little Blue Heroes - children who have or had serious medical conditions - who are now linked and supported by the Garda community initiative which sees many of them joining the force as honorary officers.
The no nonsense message from Gardai to the youths involved in a brutal attack on a young man in a town centre laneway last Saturday night is very direct: Reflect on what happened, talk to your parents and present yourselves at the Garda station - otherwise expect a knock on the door from somebody in a blue uniform very soon. The victim was knocked to the ground and viciously kicked and punched by five or six males at Chapel Lane, off New Street, shortly after 8.30pm. Any witnesses or those with information that can help in the investigation is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064-6631222.
