for those who have lost hope in being and doing good - lets say for those who are constantly humming "Rich Men North of Richmond "
read this carefully all the way through
-
Psalm 73 How good God is to Israel—to those whose hearts are pure. 2 But as for me, I came so close to the edge of the cliff! My feet were slipping and I was almost gone. 3 For I was envious of the prosperity of the proud and wicked. 4 Yes, all through life their road is smooth! They grow sleek and fat. 5 They aren’t always in trouble and plagued with problems like everyone else, 6 so their pride sparkles like a jeweled necklace, and their clothing is woven of cruelty! 7 These fat cats have everything their hearts could ever wish for! 8 They scoff at God and threaten his people. How proudly they speak! 9 They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut through the earth.

10 And so God’s people are dismayed and confused and drink it all in. 11 “Does God realize what is going on?” they ask. 12 “Look at these men of arrogance; they never have to lift a finger—theirs is a life of ease; and all the time their riches multiply.”

13 Have I been wasting my time? Why take the trouble to be pure? 14 All I get out of it is trouble and woe—every day and all day long! 15 If I had really said that, I would have been a traitor to your people. 16 Yet it is so hard to explain it—this prosperity of those who hate the Lord. 17 Then one day I went into God’s sanctuary to meditate and thought about the future of these evil men. 18 What a slippery path they are on—suddenly God will send them sliding over the edge of the cliff and down to their destruction: 19 an instant end to all their happiness, an eternity of terror. 20 Their present life is only a dream! They will awaken to the truth as one awakens from a dream of things that never really were!

21 When I saw this, what turmoil filled my heart! 22 I saw myself so stupid and so ignorant; I must seem like an animal to you, O God. 23 But even so, you love me! You are holding my right hand! 24 You will keep on guiding me all my life with your wisdom and counsel, and afterwards receive me into the glories of heaven![d] 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And I desire no one on earth as much as you! 26 My health fails; my spirits droop, yet God remains! He is the strength of my heart; he is mine forever!

27 But those refusing to worship God will perish, for he destroys those serving other gods.

28 But as for me, I get as close to him as I can! I have chosen him, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful ways he rescues me.

The Letters in the Clutch

1984. I was cleaning out the family home, dividing goods between Mom & Dad as they sorted out how to divide from each other. Emptying a dresser drawer of make-up and costume jewelry, I discovered a day clutch that served as clasp and bindery for letters—the thin, blue airmail letters, the sort one would write the whole message on and then it would fold conveniently into the envelope by which you could send it.

They were letters exchanged between my mother (CWAC) and her cousin Gilbert. Gilbert had been wounded and was convalescing in a hospital in England. Gilbert’s letters described pretty nurses who would come to his bedside to aid in his healing. Humour runs through each handwritten line as he tells his cousin Marguerite about his romantic fantasies, as he is sure that each of the young nurses is drawn to his bedside due to his handsomeness, charming smile and quick wit, qualities he treats with equal amounts of gratitude and casual self-deprecation. I have met many of my mother’s cousins and brothers and each of them is very handsome, that mix of Métis, Cree, Blackfoot, Saulteaux and French—a jumble of genes handed down from before the Medieval partitioning of western Europe manifesting in the 20th century countenance of a young Canadian with a French-sounding name.

In the timbre of the last letter, June 1944, the humour faded. Gilbert no longer viewed whatever injuries he had suffered on the battlefield as a way to go back to Canada (preferably with the address of any of the young nurses he saw daily), but now viewed the injuries as a hindrance to his ability to return to battle in order to avenge the death of his dear cousin’s fiancé. The news of the many Canadians killed by the SS stunned him, and he wrote that he would leave his convalescence to slay those responsible.

When I asked about the final letter, my mother would not speak about it. Not until many years later, when I asked for her to will them to me and she confided that she had returned them to Gilbert’s immediate family, it took the advent of the internet and many more years to pass before I learned what transpired.
June 8, 1944, Chateau d'Audrieu, France—After walking for about a day and a half, Private David Sidney Gold (Medic) with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles became a prisoner of the SS, who had commandeered Chateau d'Audrieu for their own purposes.

Captured Canadian and British soldiers were marched off into various parts of the surrounding woods and executed with a shot to the back of the head. David Gold, Medic one of the 69 assassinated by Gerhard Bremer’s 12th SS Reconnaissance Battalion.

Mom told me about David Gold, the brother of a woman we had visited in 1968 when we traveled across Canada by train and in whose living room I saw my first episode of Star Trek. David was the man she had hoped to marry as soon as the war ended. David was the love of her life.

She also related to me that in the days following the discovery of the assassinated soldiers, several of the young SS officers were rounded up and brought to wherever Mom was working during the war. When asked what she did, she told me she was just a secretary. In this place where she was ‘just a secretary,’ the German prisoners of war were brought in. She expected monsters, evil looking devils with scowls and hate imbedded on their faces.

She told me how startled she and her other secretarial coworkers were when handsome, young, blond-haired, blue-eyed boys were led into the room. Not a visible monster amongst them.

Many years later when Mom was in her early nineties and residing in an independent living seniors’ residence, she pulled out a small photo of her and David Gold standing in front of a shrub, he in army garb, she in civilian clothes. Mom would sit in front of her patio doors and prayerfully rub that photo until the face of David Gold was nothing more than curled up bits of white backing paper.

On Remembrance Day 2012, long after Mom had been placed in a 24-hour care facility. My wife had found the army induction photo of David Gold online. I had framed the photo, printed the online story of the events of June 8, 1944, at Chateau d'Audrieu, and took the whole package to Mom that night.
You could feel her heart stop for a moment. She said, “You’re trying to make me cry.”
There was a long silence then Mom said, “He was supposed to be your dad.”

She read and reread that story in the six or so years left to her. We spoke about David often and all she would relate was that she and he were to be married and a family would follow.
Sometimes she would comment about her second choice for a husband and reassure me that he was okay, too, but he was not David Gold.

Most people misremember D-Day as a singular day in which the Allies hit the beaches of France, the German military fired off the last of their ammunition and laid down arms, peace in our time, etc. But there is and was so much more.

Hmm an interesting view on the “west” from a Russian philosopher -
Even more interesting is that I recently heard a well educated westerner speaking in almost these exact words - such as Aleksandr Dugin uses to describe Putin - and the Soviet metaphysical landscape

Jasper was a Great Dog. Five years old and then came cancer.
Today we had to gather the family at the vets and let Jasper go run free in Heaven.
Yes everyone cried.
I saw him running free on the other side as he sliped the bonds of this earthly mortal coil. He is Happy, Joyous and Free.
