Ford S-MAX - adaptable and smart

ANYONE who has experienced back problems will understand the importance of comfortable car seats – ones offering the sort of support that eliminate that hunched stagger afflicting so many drivers and passengers when they get out of a vehicle. It’s something recognised by Ford in the brand’s continued quest to stay at the head of the people-shifting party. And the latest, upgraded, versions of its S-MAX sports activity vehicle don’t just deliver a more distinctive design than before, but offer front seats that can be adjusted 18 ways for maximum support. Toyota C-HR - style icon

SMALL crossovers or compact SUVs are almost ten a penny these days – but if there’s one contender that’s bang on the cash it’s the Toyota C-HR. You can line up as many of these rivals as you like, but the smart money for the sharpest design will still be levelled toward the Toyota, it’s a seriously slick-looking piece of kit. WHEN the design gurus at Lexus were challenged with enhancing the company’s flagship SUV the RX with greater elegance, but without diminishing its powerful image, they came up with a formula called ‘seductive strength’. WHEN the latest generation of the Mazda3 compact family hatchback hit UK streets last spring its impact was instantaneous. VALUE for money, premium quality and low running costs are key elements in the battle for supermini sales. And the combination of these features has seen the Renault Clio become the best selling French car of all time, topping the 15 million mark. It’s hard to comprehend that the model has been around for bang on 30 years – since that original TV advert with Papa and Nicole gave it a real sense of chic - and 18 years since football legend Thierry Henry became the dynamic face of Clio. Mitsubishi Outlander - a compelling proposition

CAR makers are rarely reserved when it comes to making bold claims about their products. In the majority of cases we just take those boasts of ‘most comfortable’, ‘most spacious’ or ‘most versatile’ with a pinch of salt. But try as you may to pick their argument apart, Mitsubishi’s assertion that the latest Outlander petrol model is the UK’s best value seven-seat 4x4 SUV is hard to deny. [ 529 more words ]

Range Rover Velar - elegance and glamour

WHEN petrol heads talk about cars possessing the ‘wow’ factor the conversation usually finds its way to low-slung supermodels from Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche. SUVs rarely entered the equation, at least not until the Range Rover Velar came along with its streamlined sense of glamour and elegance. The Velar references the codename for the original concept Range Rovers of the late 1960s and fills the space between the Range Rover Sport and Evoque. [ 600 more words ]

Kia Soul EV - Are Friends Electric

THE race to the top as car companies switch their business focus from traditional engines to electric vehicles has shifted into top gear. And some mind-boggling amounts of loot are being bandied about too. Korean manufacturer Kia, for instance, has been a front-runner in the innovation and development stakes for some years and its Plan S strategy – which will see the arrival of 11 new electric vehicles by 2025 – will involve an investment of no less than 25 billion US dollars. Jaguar E-PACE - flying the flag Jaguar E-PACE Chequered Flag

IT may be an ever so subtle hint, but a hint nonetheless. Open one of the front doors on a Jaguar E-Pace model at night and a puddle light shines on the ground showing a stalking Big Cat followed a few inches behind by a Jaguar cub. Volvo S60 - distinguished and dynamic

JAMES BOND may have preferred his Martinis to be ‘shaken not stirred’ but the popular catchphrase has been turned on its head by the fastest-growing premium car company in Britain. Swedish brand Volvo believes its mid-size saloon S60 is the most dynamic handling Volvo ever made – promising to stir but not shake its driver. And the range-topping T5 Inscription Plus automatic version we put through its paces over the Christmas to New Year period went a long way towards underpinning that claim. [ 637 more words ]

Despite being a top seller in its area of the market for more than a decade, the Qashqai hasn't rested on its laurels. Audi A8 - sleek, slick and minimalist

THE captains of industry don’t tend to appreciate a flagship that lists from side to side or bumps its way through choppy waters. It’s one of the reasons why cars reserved for the chief executive or chairman have to be silky smooth - as well as ooze quality and class. Of the models represented in this elite category few, if any, can match the peerless ride quality of the Audi A8. [ 575 more words ]

CLASSY looks and practicality can prove a compelling combination – and in the case of the Peugeot 508 SW, a serious alternative to an SUV. Subaru Outback - substance over style

NOWHERE is Japanese car maker Subaru’s brand ethos of ‘Better Where It Matters’ more perfectly illustrated than in the company’s Outback estate model. Line up a mixed bag of crossovers, SUVs or 4x4s and one of the last to be chosen on looks alone might be the Subaru. IF that famous Gothic novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde were to be applied to modern day cars, one would instantly spring to mind. If there’s a genuine Jekyll & Hyde model out there then it is surely the Ford Focus ST. Of course the Edward Hyde character in Robert Louis Stevenson’s story was evil to the core – actually based on wife murderer Eugene Chantrell – and while the Focus ST couldn’t be described as evil, it’s certainly wicked. Bentley Bentayga Speed - refined brutality

IT could be described as one of the greatest tests of driving discipline – sticking to the suburban 20mph speed limit in a car that will do 190mph. Vauxhall Astra - hanging tough

THAT fortune-telling nursery rhyme from the mid-nineteenth century, Monday’s Child, declares that Saturday’s Child Works Hard For A Living. Applied to the more modern landscape, and cars in particular, you could reasonably surmise that Vauxhall Astra models were built on a Saturday. Tough, relentless motorway miles tend to be the staple diet of the Astra, a huge percentage of which operate as part of a company fleet. [ 567 more words ]

Range Rover Evoque - billion dollar baby

IT wasn't just the Beatles connection that earned the Range Rover Evoque the label of Fab 4x4. The title has as much to do with the Liverpool-built model becoming the fastest selling vehicle in Land Rover history. And if the new, second generation, Evoque which hit the streets last spring doesn't instantly look too dissimilar from its predecessor, well the truth of the matter is that only the door hinges have been carried over. THE past year has have been on the busy side for the value for money gem in Volkswagen’s crown, Skoda. Wedged between the arrival of the fiery Kodiaq vRS SUV model and compact crossover Kamiq comes a car with an altogether more conventional name, the Scala. So perhaps it was apt, if also completely coincidental, that our first journey in this mid-size hatchback was a trip to the cinema. [ 605 more words ]

SMILE on your face performance backed up by everyday convenience has achieved cult status for the Suzuki Swift Sport – on the ‘warm’ hatchback scene at least. Fiat 500X Cross - family flexibility

COMPACT on the outside, roomy on the inside – sounds like the ideal combination for an everyday family runaround. But the Fiat 500X is far more than a mere suburban shuttle. It’s a clever and very economic crossover that gives buyers the choice to indulge in a dual personality, with a splash of Italian style. That split personality comes in the form of the car’s two body styles called Urban and Cross, each available with a choice of three trim grades – Urban, City Cross and Cross Plus. [ 479 more words ]

Would they have stood an earthly against the likes of Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Norton and Holmes for instance? Most likely not. Porsche 718 Spyder - interstellar overdrive

BLASTING a super-powered Porsche roadster at high speed through pitch black upland lanes in the dead of night might sound a foolhardy enterprise. Especially when the road surfaces are damp, greasy and covered in a carpet of fallen leaves. But there’s a twinkle of light, literally, at the end of this hour-long white-knuckle adventure. We negotiate a dam traversing the largest man-made lake in the UK, pulling to a halt in a haunting and deserted Kielder Water and Forest car park. [ 661 more words ]
