Sausage Party is the best movie of this Oscar year so far. Similar to The Book of Mormon, it candy-coats a serious message about religion in animation and song. It's a riot as lowbrow humor is elevated by the creative use of foods as characters, and the writers have fun with the parallels between the "Supermarket World" they've created and ours.

Its "Hillary in the House," the Clinton campaign music video from 2008, reprised by artist Paul McClure. Seth Panman directed the video, Jason Abrams produced it and Andrew Lyman-Clarke was the director of photography. Will the next "Planet of the Apes" movie be able to live up to "Rise of the Planet Of the Apes?"

My guess is that Andy Serkis as Ceasar will answer an emphatic yes. However, I'm concerned that the message will not be as positive in terms of the conservation and appreciation of apes and other nonhuman primates. It looks crazy awesome though.

Two outstanding space movies I've just seen are: "Gravity" and "Ender's Game." Both with amazing anti-gravity visuals and compelling performances... it's kind of a shame for Ender's Game though that it was released just after the other one, because people may be "space-sick" and not want to see it after the smash hit of Gravity.

Just watched "300" again the other day, and watched the director's commentary. It's amazing how simple some of the visual effects are that gave the film it's notoriety. The iconic shot with Gerard Butler raging out of the phalanx and slaughtering Persians in sometimes slow-mo, sometimes fast, was achieved by placing three high-speed cameras very close to one another, at different focal lengths and then digitally transitioning from angle to angle. I wish I had thought of that before 300 came out...

Saw "Pacific Rim" in IMAX 3D. The whole time I was wishing it was in High Frame Rate (like "The Hobbit") so I could drink in the awesome action sequences, especially the battle in the shallows of Hong Kong. In the final analysis, the film gets a B- for setting expectations high with the first half and then turning predictable in the third act. Also, in the world of the film, apparently nosebleeds are caused by three different things:
1) psychically handling a Jaeger alone
2) radiation from a Jaeger
3) drifting with a Kaiju
Guillermo needs a little more medical imagination to go with his fantasy!

"The East" is my highest recommendation yet this year. An indie born out of a director/actress team jumping trains and dumpster diving, it tells the story of a corporate spy infiltrating an ECO-TERRORIST cell. Badass!
