Sunnyside Mansion Fire - May 1, 2021
In the morning hours of May 1, 2021, firefighters from the Petrolia & North Enniskillen Fire Department were called to an address on Petrolia Line for a smoke investigation.
Firefighters arrived on scene and found smoke showing from the roof of the structure. While flames weren't visible from the road, crews were met with fire as soon as they made entry into the structure (a historic mansion that once belonged to John Henry Fairbank, a key player in Lambton Counties oil boom, and his wife Edna). Flames spread throughout the rear section of the home, due to the house being stripped down to the bare studs.
This isn't the first time that Sunnyside Mansion - also referred to as the Fairbanks House - has caught fire. In 2002, fire ripped through the home, destroying a good chunk of the interior.
It was reported that the blaze was caused by old electrical wiring. Fortunately, the home's occupant and his two dogs managed to escape without injury, likely thanks to working smoke alarms in the home.
