Day 29: Sweeney Todd-The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

This televised version of the 1982 Broadway production was one of my favorite musicals as a child. While this might not as entertaining to some as the Tim Burton film, it’s still worth watching if you’re a fan of the urban legend of Sweeney Todd.

Day 28: Prometheus

This is actually not a bad horror film, if you ignore the fact it tries to force itself as a prequel to Alien. If you look at it as just a standalone film, it’s more enjoyable. Definitely worth the watch.

Day 27: Predators

Day 26: Alien-Resurrection

This is probably the worst sequel in the original series with Sigourney Weaver. There’s a couple of cool action sequences, but the rest of the film is a hot mess.

Day 25: Alien 3

A lot of people didn’t like this sequel, but I thought it was just as good as the second film. The series should’ve ended here. This film introduced the world audience to David Fincher as a filmmaker. If you’re a fan of the series this is one of the better sequels.

Day 24: Predator 2

This is actually a pretty decent sequel to the original film. Bill Paxton is the only man to take on The Sci-Fi Trinity-The Terminator, The Alien, & The Predator. Gary Busey chews up the scenery as usual. If you like late 80s/early 90s action movies, you’ll definitely enjoy this film.

Day 23: Predator

This classic horror film starts off as a typical Schwarzenegger action film (he seemed to be shelling those out by the month at the time) & turns into an original horror film. While the CGI effects don’t hold up as well, the practical monster makeup effects are still great & intimidating, thanks to Stan Winston’s design. Definitely a movie that must be on every monster horror fan’s list.

Day 22: Alien

This classic film started it all with the horror sci-fi series. One of the most iconic horror films, while very dated in the technology, still holds up as a true horror classic & is still frightening to this day over 40 years later. The chestburster scene is still one of the best shock scenes in a horror film.

Day 21: Jurassic World

A decent reboot to the series, but just doesn’t have the soul of the original film. If you’re a fan of the series then definitely watch this film. I found some plot elements ridiculous (making the raptors trainable pets for one). If you’re looking for a decent action film, check this out.

Day 20: Jurassic Park 3

Sam Neill & the rest of the cast obviously needed a paycheck to have filmed this dumpster fire. Téa Leoni should win the award for most annoying character, I was really hoping one of the dinosaurs would eat her, so we wouldn’t have to listen to her screaming & horrible acting. And the raptor egg return scene is just absolutely ridiculous. Don’t waste your time watching this.

Day 19: The Lost World-Jurassic Park

Here is another prime example that you don’t have to make several films after the first sequel. A perfect follow up to the original film, again the series should have ended here. The effects don’t hold up quite as well as the original, but are still good for the time.

Day 18: Jurassic Park

I know what you’re saying, “But, Swannie, this isn’t a horror film, it’s a sci-fi adventure film.” I don’t know, being stranded on an island trying to not be eaten by genetically engineered animals that went extinct 65 million years ago, seems pretty terrifying to me. I saw this film when it was first released 30 years ago, & 8 year old me crawled up my dad’s arm like a spider monkey during the T-Rex attack scene, & again later during the Velociraptor attack scenes. The majority of the special effects still hold up, thanks to Stan Winston’s genius & Spielberg’s clever direction. If you haven’t read the novel by Michael Crichton, you should, the novel is more horrific than the film.

Day 17: Terminator 3-The Rise of The Machines

The studio, against its better judgment, decided to cash in on the success of Judgement Day (albeit 12 years too late) by snubbing the perfect ending of 2 & starting a series of films that would end up going off the rails & proving no matter what you do, you can’t change the future. The special effects are horrible. Claire Danes, who is a great actress, is horrible & annoying. This is not even a good mind numbing popcorn action movie.

Day 16: Terminator 2-Judgement Day

If ever there was a perfect sequel to a film, this would be it. In fact, the entire series should’ve just ended with this film, because it ended on a perfect note. The special effects still hold up over 30 years later. The action sequences are perfect. James Cameron’s best film (yes, even better than Titanic & Avatar).

Day 15: The Terminator

The film that started it all. Now I know some people will argue that this isn’t a horror film, that it’s a sci-fi film. I like to think of it as horror & sci-fi mixed together. A guy (or in this case a machine) stalking a woman to kill her, that’s basically the plot of the majority of slasher films. Imagine someone wanting to kill you for something you haven’t done yet. That’s the plot of this classic film that started a whole series of films & made Schwarzenegger a star. The special effects don’t hold up well & are cheesy, but it’s still a suspenseful film from the genius of James Cameron.

Day 14: Get Out

It’s already nerve wracking meeting your significant other’s family, but throw in a nefarious plot & you have a true horror story. Jordan P*ele made his horror directorial debut with this film & he didn’t disappoint. This film will have you not wanting to have a cup of tea with anyone or be around anyone with a tea set.

Day 13: Casper

This is a Halloween classic perfect for the entire family. Lots of nods to different horror classics throughout. If you’re a fan of the original cartoon, you’ll like this film. Christina Ricci & Bill Pullman are both great in the film. And not gonna lie, I always get weepy eyed during the end.

Day 11: Jaws The Revenge

It’s obvious everyone in this film just did it for the money & not because it was a good script, because the plot is absolutely ridiculous. Michael Caine missed out on accepting his Oscar for Hannah & Her Sisters, because he was filming this garbage movie, but the paycheck did buy his mother a house. Day 10: Jaws 3

This sequel is where the franchise started going off the rails. The effects are horrible, the plot is terrible, & those Brody kids sure did grow up fast. If you like campy horror films, this is one to check out.

Day 8: The Pope’s Exorcist

Day 7: Virtuosity

This is a decent sci-fi thriller with 2 great leading men, Denzel Washington & Russell Crowe. Set in the futuristic 1999 (haha) Denzel has to stop Crowe (who is a computer composite made up of hundreds of serial killers, including the one that murdered Denzel’s family) from murdering more people. Pretty entertaining popcorn action flick.

Day 6: Single White Female

This 90s thriller was actually pretty good & has aged well. Bridget Fonda & Jennifer Jason Leigh both give great performances in the film. I think this is every single person’s worst nightmare, living with a sociopath who wants to destroy your life to make it their own. This film made me not ever want to be roommates with a complete stranger.

Day 5: Beetlejuice

A Tim Burton classic that is still just as popular today as it was 35 years ago. Michael Keaton is great as the title character in this dark comedy. Great performances by a star studded cast, especially 15 year old Winona Ryder. This film is a must have on everyone’s Halloween movie list.

Day 4: Annihilation

A very well done cosmic horror, based on the novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, which is a similar story to The Colour Out of Space by H.P. Lovecraft. The tone & direction of the film will have you off balance & on edge with the characters. This film has one of the most disturbing suspenseful scenes in a horror film. Definitely recommend.

Day 3: The Tragedy of Macbeth

This is, in my opinion, the best adaptation of the William Shakespeare tragedy. The unconventional casting of Denzel Washington in the lead role pays off, & this is Denzel’s best role. Joel Coen’s direction for this film is very similar to Robert Eggers (The Witch), I actually thought Eggers was the director until I saw the end credits. Bruno Delbonnel’s cinematography, although very simple, is beautiful in the stark black & white. Carter Burwell’s score is just as entrancing as it is frightening. Kathryn Hunter should have received an award for her portrayal of the witches, a truly remarkable performance.

Day 2: A Haunting in Venice

This is the best film in Sir Kenneth Branagh’s Hercules Poirot series based on the novels by Agatha Christie. A perfect mystery who did it with a possible supernatural element thrown in. The film had a perfect cast & great direction & kept you guessing up until the big reveal. If you’re a fan of mystery films, I definitely recommend this one.

Day 1: The Last Voyage of The Demeter

This is a great adaptation of Chapter 7 in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Majority of the Dracula adaptations have barely touched on what happened on The Demeter, this film goes into full detail what happened that last fateful voyage. This film is a great atmospheric horror, it doesn’t rely on constant jump scares to frighten you, but instead builds up the tension & pays off with the climactic scenes. This film kept me intrigued from beginning to end. If you’re a fan of the original novel or a fan of Dracula films in general, you’ll definitely want to see this movie.
