In our new blog in the series, comic artist Vincenzo Pani presents a humorous re-elaboration of the episode of Odysseus and the Cyclops taken from Homer’s Odyssey. Odysseus is not the symbol of the courageous and upright hero. On the contrary, he is presented as an unpleasant and troublesome character who gets out of trouble only through his unscrupulous cleverness and the help of powerful friends (represented by the goddess Athena).

Our latest blog post by Charlotte Spence offers a new perspective on the relationship between the under-classes and the gods in Ancient Greece and Rome. Public festivals and large sanctuaries were not the only places in which individuals could get in touch with the divine. Oracles and curse tables offer interesting examples of direct prayer and of a more intimate contact with the gods.

Interested in Classical Reception and Myth? Our latest post 'The Thesean cult of personality: power, politics and contingent mythologies within Classical Athens’ by Ben Stanley Cassell explores the importance of myth in the political development of Classical Athens. In this context, the story of the hero Theseus became a prominent presence that was manipulated to sustain the democratic establishment of the city and to consolidate its unity in times of adversity.

We are now sharing our CfP for Issue #5, 'Exchange'. 'Concepts of knowledge exchange are a constant feature in contemporary academia. Conferences, journals and symposia from every discipline facilitate the sharing of new ideas and arguments. In the wider world, however, understandings of ‘exchange’ are not limited to knowledge dissemination alone.
'Exchange can be cultural, bringing people into contact with new languages and forms of expression. In the arts, we witness cross-cultural communication through translated literature, film, music and theatre. Exchange can also be social, encompassing the movement of people and traditions across
borders. Yet, at the same time, exchange can have an insidious element in the shape of economic exploitation, cultural appropriation or resistance to change.'
If you want to be part of our next Issue, it's time to get scribbling! You have until the 6th January 2020 to send us your ideas.

Chic's New Single calls us to Come and be Safer on the Dancefloor | Question - Essays and Art from the Humanities

"It is a bright, energetic song about doomsday. Chic’s 2018 song, 'Till the World Falls', their first single for an album in 26 years, defuses the idea of impending oblivion, transforming it into an opportunity for unashamed disco fun.
At a time where Donald Trump is expressing nationalist sentiments in the U.S., Chic calls us to reject this and unite around dance music."
Music and contemporary world in our new blog post, by Will Rees, University of Exeter.

Filmistaan: A love for cinema that forges connections across time, nations, and borders | Question - Essays and Art from the Humanities

"“Whenever Aftaab brings a film to show in the village from India,
I always come to watch it. Under this guise I can visit that side,
meet those people, walk those streets, I can feel the trees there and my heart gleams with happiness.”
Today, in this new blog post, Meera Shirodkar (University of Southampton) brings us to Filmistaan.

Drawing the state of exception | Question - Essays and Art from the Humanities

"For Schmitt, the sovereign—the absolute, legitimate ruler of a state—reveals himself in two ways: firstly, through the ability to make a genuine or pure decision; and secondly, by deciding what constitutes an exceptional moment, an exceptional case. The extraordinary measure appears during emergency, siege, or crisis, at a time that requires suspension of the existing order so as to maintain order."

A new blog post by Joseph Owen, University of Southampton.

IntroductionCarl Schmitt was a Weimar political and legal thinker who became one of the leading jurists of the Third Reich. Schmitt is best known for his theor
