Teamwork or individual reliance?
I made this as an example today and even I was surprised. The story we tell on social media depends on photos. That story changes dramatically by cropping photos. The photo trend lately is vertical and for a long time we’ve all taken horizontal photos. When you see something on social media, question the choices made to tell you that story, who was left out, who was included, how the photo was edited, cropped, recolored. It all matters because people in marketing want to affect your emotions.

TikTok consistently makes lists of top 10 most dangers apps for kids (as does YouTube, Snapchat and sometimes Roblox). I'm fact, there are very few social media platforms that allow users under the age of 13. Are your under-13s on any of these apps? For anyone who isn't an expert, this is a good and none-hystericall guide to TikTok to help you decide what social media networks we right for your kids. You’ll find helpful reviews for all kinds of media from TV to games on Common Sense Media. I use it frequently.

Read Common Sense Media's app review, age rating, and parents guide to TikTok, the popular video sharing and lip-synching app that's all the rage with kids, despite some iffy content.

Often what we see is altered so much as to be nearly indistinguishable from the original. We are all so accustomed to the top version of DaVinci’s The Last Supper that many don’t know it looks more like the bottom version (and even that may look better than it does in real life). We’re so accustomed to the “pretty” version it’s hard to believe the real version is what’s on the wall in Milan. It’s very much like how we present ourselves and see others on social media. We show the lives we want people to see. Advanced photo manipulation is used to change physical appearances. We only show our smiling kids, not the melt down rebellious moments. We post our happy moments, not the times we’re overwhelmed by life. Don’t compare your life to anyone else’s based on his/her/their social media posts. You’re only seeing a small fraction of reality.

Very few churches were prepared for live-streaming worship. Pastors have taken on this challenge, and it’s complicated. This is a crisis response, not a long-planned and prepared new communications strategy. Thank them for the hard work they’re putting into learning new skills and trying new technology. They’re bringing the Church to you when you most need it.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary Has Been Trolling Trump For Months

Fascinating case study of using a brand's core identity in a funny way to stay relevant to current events. It's risky; you have to thread a needle between staying snarky and fun vs offensive.

Throughout the presidential campaign, the linguistic institution developed its funny style of delicately poking at Donald Trump and his associates on Twitter.

Bring Back The Interest Lists

Interest lists are gone. I feel like I'm operating Facebook without my we'll-curated rodemaps.

'Sheila's Guide To The Good Stuff' dug into the issue of the deprecated Interest List.

This is what Facebook says about the issue:

“Interest Lists – Follower Counts.

Interest lists are a way to organize and view content on Facebook. Given low consumer usage of interest lists, we have decided to retire this feature, which will result in a drop in the total number of followers for profiles that created interest lists or were featured in lists. There are two reasons for this: 1) For people that created or were featured in an interest list, profile follower counts include the followers of the interest list; 2) People can follow someone from a profile and through an interest list, which means a profile’s follower number could double count that person. This update does not impact News Feed distribution or Page Insights. The impact to profile follower counts will vary, depending on the number of interest lists the profile created and was featured in. Most profiles will see a drop in followers of less than 5%.”

Social Media People Who Tweet About Veterans Today Should Be Fired

I found this after organizing holiday posts for all my clients and it got me thinking. Are there just some holidays it's wrong for an organization to post about on social media? Does it depend on the organization or depend on the post? Or, is it just always wrong?

Corporate tweeting in response to Veterans Day is particularly obnoxious and should result in immediate termination for those responsible — but it does help show why these efforts are always horrible.
