I moved to Ghana to get closer to God

A few years back in Nigeria, the stern-face of popular actor, Hanks Anuku adorned many film jackets.

But that is no more the case as no one knows if the face of Hanks Anuku can still sell even a local community film this time around.

He was made the Special Adviser to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State on Tourism and Entertainment in 2010, but he later left the job.

After that, he was in the news for being delivered from alcohol and mental illness by Prophet TB Joshua, he later moved to Ghana after the incident.

Some days ago, newsmen met him in Ghana and he had a short interview with us, where he explained the reason behind his relocation to the West African country.

Why did you leave Nigeria for Ghana

Yea, as you can see, I am in Ghana now. It was a decision I made to get a few things for myself and to get closer to God because so many things happened to me in Nigeria that I was not happy about.

Does that mean you wouldn’t have been closer to God if you were in Nigeria

I would always have time for anybody and appreciate the presence of a man or woman of substance.

What do you do here presently

Apart from film-making, I am into the development of grassroots’ talents in music and film-making.

How is that going

It has been very great.

Are Ghanaians embracing you

You know, love thy neighbour like thyself is my tool across the Nile unto Jericho. I think everybody loves me. I don’t know who the enemy is. So, whoever the enemy is, I am sorry, I forgive all haters. That is what it is.

Should your fans in Nigeria be expecting something from you soon

Well, everything depends on God. He is my provider. If God wants me to go to Nigeria, no problem, I mean, as long as you are serious with the job.

Invest in your workers – Fiifi Banson implores media houses

Radio presenter and media consultant Fiifi Banson has called on owners of various media houses in the Ghanaian sports fraternity to make a conscious effort to invest in equipment.
The Chief Executive Officer of F and B Consult also called for more training to upgrade the skills of practitioners’ resource. According to him the use of crude equipment coupled with the poor knowledge of effective communication projects a poor image of the sports community internationally.

“Sometimes i tune to radio commentary and for the first ten minutes i cant even tell which team is playing from where to where,we need to correct some of these things otherwise when we go to compete on the international level they look at us and laugh,” he said.

“I’m appealing to radio station owners especially the local ones they should invest a bit more in equipment and also a bit more into training the personnel they hire,” he told newsmen.

Banson was speaking at the launch of the Ghana Sports Journalists Awards Launch in Accra. The event which comes on in December will see sports journalists in the country awarded in various categories including most promising sports journalist of the year and most popular sports program of the year for both television and radio.

Ghanaian teenager sentenced to 18 years over fatal stabbing

A teenage footballer has been sentenced to at least 18 years behind bars for murdering a man at Westfield Stratford shopping centre weeks before the 2012 Olympic Games.

The throwing of a yoghurt pot sparked a mass brawl between two gangs on 29 June 2012, during which Liam Woodards – who had been out celebrating his 24th birthday – was stabbed, the Old Bailey heard.

Nii-Azu Kojo-Smith lunged forward and stabbed Woodards in the chest. As the victim lay dying, the fight moved on to Stratford tube station where one of Woodards’ friends stabbed one of the opposing group.

Following a three-month retrial, Kojo-Smith, 19, of Hackney, east London, was found guilty of Woodards’ murder by a majority of 11 to one.

The court heard that Kojo-Smith had a previous conviction for battery and threatening behaviour in 2010 after he was involved in a group attack on a passenger at Finsbury Park tube station.

In mitigation, the court heard he was a talented young footballer who was involved in coaching at Arsenal. His lawyer, Philippa McAtasney QC, said: “He was a talented footballer. He had obtained an FA1 coaching certificate and his future was set – all of that thrown away in a second of his behaviour.”

She said he knew that what he did was “very wrong” and that saying sorry to the victim’s family was not enough.

Detaining Kojo-Smith for a minimum of 18 years, the judge Richard Marks QC said: “The shopping centre at that time was full of men, women and children going about their business. It was a horrific scene of complete bedlam as many members of the public ran for safety into shops which swiftly closed their doors.

“It was readily apparent that those caught up in those appalling events must have been and were absolutely terrified.”

Tony Caton, 22, of Stratford, was convicted of two counts of violent disorder, and Anselm Legemah, 19, of east London, was convicted of one count of violent disorder. Caton was handed three years in jail while Legemah, whose girlfriend was heavily pregnant at the time, was sentenced to two years in a young offenders institution.

The judge praised the victim’s parents for their dignified conduct throughout the trial. He said: “The parents of Liam Woodards have attended every day of the trial. They have earned the respect of the court by the fact they have conducted themselves with dignity throughout in what must have been a shocking ordeal. I express hope the conclusion of the trial will bring them some closure.”

Federal Appeals Court Upholds NYC's Ban on Worship Services at Public Schools

An appeals court in New York City on Thursday ruled that the Board of Education was abiding by the law in prohibiting the Bronx Household of Faith from using public school facilities for worship services during off-hours.

The 2-1 vote, a reversal of a 2012 injunction against the city, comes amid a decades-long battle between church leaders and city officials. The plaintiff's attorneys say they are considering appealing, once more, to the Supreme Court.

Robert Hall, pastor of the Bronx Household of Faith, said he was "very sad" about the court's decision, according to newsmen.

"This is about our rights. There seems to be an increasing attempt to marginalize Christianity in civilization," added Hall.

The Court of Appeals' decision potentially affects numerous other faith communities across New York City's five boroughs, although many Christian congregations share worship space at available churches on Sundays.

In its decision to reverse the 2012 permanent injunction ruling of Manhattan Federal Judge Loretta Preska, the three-judge panel concluded that "the Board's prohibition was consistent with its constitutional duties," and that Preska wrongly concluded that withholding permits for worship services at school facilities during off-hours was a violation of the Free Exercise and Establishment Religion Clauses of the First Amendment.

The judge who dissented in Thursday's ruling, John M. Walker, Jr., wrote in the decision that he was in favor of a permanent injunction against the Board of Education and suggested that a double-standard was being applied.

"In my view, the Board of Education's policy that disallows 'religious worship services' after hours in public schools — limited public fora that are otherwise open to all — violates the Free Exercise Clause because it plainly discriminates against religious belief and cannot be justified by a compelling government interest. I would affirm the district court's permanent injunction."

Alliance Defending Freedom, the legal group defending the Bronx Household of Faith in the case, suggested that the Court of Appeals' concluding argument was faulty in its interpretation of the law.

"The First Amendment prohibits New York City from singling out worship services and excluding them from empty school buildings," reads a response to the ruling by ADF Senior Counsel Jordan Lorence.

"The reason is because the buildings are generally available to all individuals and community groups for any activity 'pertaining to the welfare of the community.' There is no subsidy of churches here. Churches and religious groups pay the same uniform rates that everyone else does to use the schools. We are seriously considering an appeal in this case, either to all of the judges on the 2nd Circuit or to the U.S. Supreme Court." In 2011, ADF appealed to the Supreme Court to hear its case, but the court refused.

Business and consumer confidence drop over utility and fuel price hikes

The Bank of Ghana says it is worried about waning consumer and business sentiment in the country.

The central bank fears the development as well as tightened credit conditions could impact on its outlook of the economy.

Latest surveys conducted by the Bank of Ghana indicate softening business and consumer sentiments.

The softening of Consumer Confidence has been attributed to increases in utility and fuel price hikes.

Businesses are also less optimistic about achieving revenue, sales and employment targets as well as capital outlay.

According to the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana, disruptions in the energy sector and utility price shocks, as well as falling gold production and prices, took their toll on growth last year.
