Harlem Valley AT Hiker Portraits

Bloodroot & Gump. On a 2,200 mile trek, where every ounce makes a difference, we got to give mad credit to Gump for carrying a proper camera. We are sure there are a lot of amazing images being created along their journey northbound on their thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. They hit the trail on March 28th.

This is what three days of rain do to Kevin Elens, “Gump’s” feet. Gross, get them out of my face please. 😘

Today we crossed the tallest dam in the east (Fontana), entered the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, touched our third state (Tennessee), and got to hang out in this rad tree in the middle of a field of Spring beauties. We also logged our most miles to date while conquering the notorious climb out of Fontana Dam

Couldn't finish a whole $5 hot and ready so we packed it out and had a slice of cold and foggy

DWR Day - Our AT Thru

In our preparation for the Appalachian Trail we have some gear that isn't exactly brand new. A well worn Patagonia windshirt from my Pacific Crest Trail thru might be beyond saving but Amanda's raincoat she has been wearing around town just needs a little refreshing of the water repellency. For the first time I decided to try out rejuvenating that Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating using a wash-in followed by a spray on coating. [ 1,101 more word ]

10 Months - Our AT Thru

Yesterday Amanda and I celebrated 10 months since reconnecting. Our first day together when asked by Amanda about the Appalachian Trail I stated I had no intention of hiking the AT and the CDT or Te Araroa (which I still don't know how to pronounce) would be my next hike. Well things change. We are now less than three weeks away from stepping off from Springer Mountain towards Maine on the Appalachian Trail together. [ 520 more words ]

Watch! Free documentaries about the A.T. - Our AT Thru

We enjoy watching documentaries on Netflix, especially ones about the outdoors. As of late, or entertainment is consumed by the upcoming trip on the AT. Here's a list of three documentaries available on YouTube (for FREE!) about the Appalachian Trail. They range from 35-90 or so minutes long, so check them out when you have some free time. And while you're sitting on your couch snacking, think about us eating dehydrated rice meals as we climb the mountains shown. [ 351 more words ]

February Update - Our AT Thru

We are 24 days away from starting our Appalachian Trail trek. Training has continued through Chicagoland’s record-tying snow accumulation over a 9 day period in February (3rd to 11th). This totaled over a foot of snow. Luckily the snow tailed off after that. Starved Rock We continue our update with a revisit to the frozen falls at starved rock state park for their annual eagle weekend. [ 1,185 more word ]

January Recap - Our AT Thru

January Recap January 28th has come and gone on our way to the March 28th Appalachian Trail start date. We are less than two months away. Time is starting to feel like an issue. I don't feel like I have gotten myself in the shape I would like to be. My steps have been averaging around 11,000 steps a day, short of my 15,000 a day goal. [ 789 more words ]

Four Frozen Falls - Our AT Thru

Our trip On Sunday, January 7th, we spent a few hours traipsing around Starved Rock State Park. With 79 days to go until March 28th we don't quite feel a time crunch, but it is still important to get our steps in. We put in 8 miles over the course of a leisurely 4 hours. The highlight of the trip was definitely the frozen St. [ 291 more words ]
