Life expectancy in the United States increased last year, reaching its highest level since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The report found that life expectancy at birth rose to 78.4 years in 2023, nearly a full year higher than the 77.5 years recorded in 2022. The nearly one-year jump represents a significant shift, according to Ken Kochanek, a statistician at the National Center for Health Statistics and co-author of the report.

“The increase we had this year — the 0.9 year — that’s unheard of prior to the pandemic,” Kochanek said. Historically, life expectancy in the U.S. fluctuates by only a few tenths of a year. However, he noted that the pandemic caused an unprecedented decline, followed by a sharp recovery as Covid-related deaths have fallen.

A local pizza delivery driver expressed gratitude after strangers rallied to raise thousands of dollars for him, following a viral video that highlighted his dedication to the job.

Connor Stephanoff, who works for Rock Star Pizza in Indiana, gained widespread attention after a TikTok video showed him delivering pizzas through heavy snowfall.

The footage, posted by Officer Richard Craig, captured Stephanoff returning from a delivery after trekking nearly half a mile through the snowstorm, dressed in only sweatpants and sneakers. “Look at this man. This man walked through hell and high water to deliver a pizza,” Craig remarked in the video.

When asked whether he had received a substantial tip for his efforts, Stephanoff responded that he had been given just $2. Craig reacted with disbelief, urging customers to “do better.”

India now hosts the world’s largest tiger population, despite having the highest human density and just 18% of the global tiger habitat, according to a new study.

In a little over a decade, the country has doubled its tiger population to more than 3,600, accounting for 75% of the world’s remaining wild tigers.

The big cats now inhabit approximately 138,200 square kilometers (53,360 square miles)—an area about half the size of the United Kingdom—alongside nearly 60 million people.

The study, published in Science, attributes this success to efforts aimed at curbing poaching, preserving habitats, securing prey populations, mitigating human-wildlife conflict, and supporting local communities.

Amid the devastation left by the Los Angeles wildfires, an Altadena couple discovered an unexpected silver lining.

Brian McShea proposed to his girlfriend, Stephanie Raynor, after recovering the engagement ring he had purchased before the fire from the ruins of their home.

The couple had lived in their house for less than a year when they were forced to evacuate on January 7 as wildfires swept through the area, destroying thousands of structures, including their home. While they lost nearly all their belongings, they were able to save their pets.

Despite the destruction, McShea held onto a glimmer of hope that the engagement ring—or at least its stone—had survived. “I was thinking, ‘Well, maybe the stone should survive, and maybe we’ll find the little stone,’” he told KABC.

The couple began searching through the remains of their home, focusing on the area where McShea had kept the ring. Raynor, unaware of what he was looking for, watched as McShea sifted through the debris. Then, he found it—intact.

Already on one knee, McShea decided there was no better moment to propose. “I was on my knees, and I was like, ‘Hey, will you marry me?’” he recalled. Overcome with emotion, Raynor accepted.

The rate of deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon fell by nearly 50% in 2023 compared to the previous year, and has continued to fall since, space agency data suggests.

in 2024, Brazil’s environment ministry said it was the lowest recorded deforestation rate in the last five years.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva pledged to end deforestation by 2030 when he took office.
