We went to Mass yesterday, because Mr. Awkward Catholics works on Sundays. The homily was wonderful - I’m pretty sure at least, because he made such an impactful point at the beginning, it sparked thinking in me and I had to make myself keep coming back to what he was saying because my brain was inspired.

“The same people who spread their garments, who spread palms, and who cried ‘Hosannah’ are the same people who, by the end of the week, were yelling ‘Crucify Him!!’”

What a realization. I don’t know how I’ve never thought about that. Maybe I just assumed it was a different crowd of people? Or maybe I just never really thought it through, but it finally makes sense.

And in a way, we still do it today, right? We praise Jesus and then turn around and fail Him again and again with our actions, our thoughts, our words…

“I love Jesus, but… the Bible is archaic…the church needs to update its teachings…the views need to be modernized…etc…”

As if the God of All wouldn’t know what the world would be like all these years later, wouldn’t know the things we would face, or couldn’t fathom how “evolved” we have become.

There is nothing new under the sun.

We love Him when it serves us, but we turn from Him when the world tells us we should think another way.

I don’t really have a conclusion to this realization. Just the realization itself, and a hope to do better.

Happy Palm Sunday, y’all.

💭 Does Life Require a and a ? Let’s Talk! 💭

Imagine waking up every day with no reason to get out of bed, no direction, no purpose. It would feel… empty, right? 😞

Now imagine a life filled with meaning, where every struggle, every joy, every moment has a greater purpose—one that goes beyond just getting through the day.

So here’s the big question: Does life require a purpose and a goal?

💡 Some say, “Yes, absolutely!” Without purpose, life feels random and directionless. Purpose gives , , and .

🤷‍♂️ Others might say, “No, just live in the moment.” Maybe purpose isn’t something we need—maybe life is about simply being.

📖 But as Catholics, we believe that we were made for something greater.
- God created us for a reason. (Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you…”)
- Our ultimate goal is Heaven. (Philippians 3:14 – “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”)
- Even our daily lives can have meaning. (Colossians 3:23 – “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”)

What Do You Think?

🛑 Do Catholics Believe in "Works-Based Salvation"? Let’s Clear This Up! 🛑

🚨 “You Catholics believe you have to earn your way to Heaven!” 🚨
How many times have you heard that one? 🤦‍♂️

Let’s set the record straight: Catholics DO NOT believe we can "work" our way to Heaven. We believe, as the Bible teaches, that:

👉 We are saved by grace through faith.
📖 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works.” – Ephesians 2:8-9

BUT… the Bible also says:

👉 Faith alone is NOT enough if it’s not lived out.
📖 “Faith without works is dead.” – James 2:26

👉 Jesus literally tells us that our actions matter.
📖 “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink… Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me.” – Matthew 25:35-40

So What Do Catholics Believe?
✔️ We are saved by grace alone, through faith in Christ.
✔️ But that faith must be alive and expressed in acts of love (Galatians 5:6).
✔️ Good works are NOT a way to earn salvation—they are the fruit of true faith.

🔥 Think of it like this:

Faith is like a fire—it’s real when it burns and gives off light.
Works are the warmth and glow—the visible proof that the fire exists.

Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give your angels charge over those who sleep.

Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ.
Rest your weary ones.
Bless your dying ones.
Soothe your suffering ones.
Pity your afflicted ones.
Shield your joyous ones.
And for all your love's sake. Amen.

There are plenty of awkward things in Catholic life, and we continue to discover more as we become more aware of the reality of being Catholic in rural . Not that we’re complaining!

But, for example, finding an opportunity to get to has been a challenge.

Here’s some about our community. There are 18,200+ people here and 80+ churches listed in the local paper each week with addresses in the county. We did the math tonight, and if 100% of the population here attended church (they don’t), it works out to 220ish attendees at each church.

There is only 1 Church amongst those 80+ churches. While it does offer scheduled opportunities for reconciliation before Sunday Mass, hubby can’t make it on Sundays. There is no Saturday Vigil Mass at this parish, so we have to travel to a neighboring county to make it to weekly Mass. We’d show up when we thought we could make our confessions, only to find that we were mistaken, or just general confusion lead us not to understand where to go or what to do. It was - but that’s how we roll, right?

Finally, this past weekend after Saturday Vigil Mass, I couldn’t take it anymore and just waited to ask the priest how we could make it happen. After chatting for a bit and realizing our schedule limits us from nearly every opportunity, he offered to meet us for reconciliation last night.

We had to haul our tushies very quickly after work to get there, it’s a 45 minute drive to his second parish (yes, bless him, he has two!) but we made it and were able to make our confessions last night!

I have to tell you, I am always a little antsy about it, and maybe a little extra this time because it had been a while and he was making time just for us, but this was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I didn’t feel rushed, and Father took some time to counsel me on some important things, which was wonderful.

Of the 80+ churches in our community, the vast majority of church-goers have a bias against and don’t realize we are just as they are. What are some ways you think we can help our community understand and maybe even embrace Catholicism?

💙 The Miraculous Waters of Lourdes: A Spring of Healing & Faith 💙

In a quiet corner of France, nestled between rolling hills, there’s a spring that has baffled doctors, inspired millions, and witnessed some of the most astonishing miracles in Church history.

It all began in 1858 when Our Lady appeared to a poor 14-year-old girl, St. Bernadette Soubirous, in the small town of Lourdes. During one of the apparitions, Mary told Bernadette to dig in the dirt—and from that spot, a spring of water began to flow.

At first, it was nothing but muddy water. But soon, the spring cleared and began changing lives. Since then, over 7,000 healings have been reported, and 70 of them have been officially declared miracles by the Church after rigorous medical and scientific examination.

✨ One of the Most Incredible Lourdes Miracles ✨
In 1908, Marie Bailly, a 22-year-old woman, was suffering from tubercular peritonitis, a deadly disease that left her abdomen severely swollen and filled with fluid. She was in excruciating pain, barely able to move. Doctors had given up all hope and told her family to prepare for her death.

Still, Marie’s faithful father insisted on taking her to Lourdes. The moment she arrived at the sanctuary, she was placed in the Lourdes baths, where the miraculous water is used for healing.

As soon as the cold water touched her body, she felt a sudden warmth spread through her, and immediately, the swelling disappeared. The pain was gone. Within hours, she was standing, walking, and completely healed. The doctors who had seen her on her deathbed were stunned. Her cure was later officially recognized as a miracle.

Today, millions of pilgrims travel to Lourdes seeking healing—not just for their bodies, but for their hearts, minds, and souls. The waters don’t work like magic; rather, they are a sign of God’s mercy and a reminder of Our Lady’s powerful intercession.

🙏 Have you or someone you know experienced a miracle through Mary’s intercession?
Drop your story in the comments—we’d love to hear how God has moved in your life!

Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us! 💙
