Meet the Zor | Shuckin' Shack Oyster Bar | Jonathan Weathington
Meet Jonathan Weathington (linkedin.com/in/jweathington), CEO of Shuckin' Shack Oyster Bar.
What is Shuckin' Shack Oyster Bar ?
Once upon a time, way back in 2007, Shuckin’ Shack co-Founders Matt Piccinin and Sean Cook had a craving for fresh oysters. Living in the sleepy coastal town of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, they figured it shouldn’t be too hard to find an oyster bar, right? WRONG.
Realizing they’d stumbled onto an unmet need in their local restaurant and bar scenes, Matt and Sean hatched a plan to open their own fresh oyster bar and seafood restaurant. Through cases of beer and plans scrawled on napkins, the pair’s dream materialized as a 900-square-foot monument to domestic seafood, cold beer, and laid-back fun for the locals who would flock to it upon opening.
Shuckin’ Shack was an instant hit with the locals, but things didn’t really get cooking until Jonathan Weathington joined the crew in 2014, quickly becoming the CEO and getting the bar and grill off the ground as a franchise ownership opportunity.
Our first sports bar franchise location opened in Summerville, SC in 2015, and we haven’t looked back since! We’re now extending bar franchise opportunities to damn cool people who want to help us take this thing across the country.

Meet the Zor | Pigtails & Crewcuts CEO Wade Brannon
When Wade Brannon’s children visited Pigtails & Crewcuts, they immediately fell in love. Brannon had retired from a successful career in the franchise industry a few years before so he could spend more time with his family, but saw great potential for the concept to grow with the increasing demand for services that cater to families with young children. He also saw it as a great opportunity to create a business that would allow its franchisees the family time that seemed to be missing from many existing opportunities, and knew there would be owners who desired the same thing. Brannon was ready to head back to work in the franchise industry, and as fate would have it, the original owner of Pigtails & Crewcuts was ready to sell the salon.
Coffee & Analytics, 2 pm EST Fri, Jan. 12 The Value & Use of Franchise PR + How Candidates Use Media
A long time ago, I shifted my viewpoint on the value of franchise PR. Part of the reason for the shift was the changing climate of how buyers found franchises and worked through the process. This month, I thought there would be value in giving you two things: Information on using PR and the value of franchise PR; and data on how candidates use media.
First, PR.
When we started No Limit Agency (now Mainland), we pitched PR services just like every other agency – as franchise lead generation. To some extent, it was. At that point (2008), the candidate had only a few useful tools for covering franchises: Portals, shows and buzz.
Oftentimes, we would book a media placement and leads would come in. We were capturing candidates at the right time – meaning, they were ready to fill out the form (you have heard me say 6.4 months to that point today). They didn’t have the tools or the resources to deeply study opportunities, nor super resources like the franchise broker networks. They simply relied on buzz and search.
But things have changed.
Now, there are tremendous amounts of tools – including what I would call the most important tool – the franchise website.
While I pitch PR as lead awareness versus lead generation, there are a few key things to note:
1) Consistency is King: We aligned PR with leads. Weeks we got PR, leads went up. Weeks we didn’t, leads went down.
2) People > Brand: Stories that highlight a new store opening does not excite the candidate. Stories about people and life stories do.
3) Great Unit Level Performance Still Drives Leads: We have a client that is crushing it in sales. Thus, when we get PR, they get quality leads. The pathway to qualified leads is so much easier when you have a performing business.
4) Win Your Milestones: Signing, opening, first year, scale. All should have news that hits press wires, media, social channels, digital ads, your website, your lead database and your customers.
PR should be in your mix, but sh

Guide to Buying a Franchise: Before You Sign the Franchise Agreement
The franchisor’s disclosures may change between the time you receive the FDD and the time you sign the franchise agreement. For example, the franchisor may have updated its FDD each calendar quarter and must update the FDD after its fiscal year ends. You have the right to ask for a copy of any updated information before you sign the franchise agreement. An updated FDD may reveal new lawsuits were filed by or against the franchisor, changes in the franchisor’s management or training teams, more current financial performance data or other useful information.

Guide to Buying a Franchise: Evaluating Potential Earnings
Evaluating Potential Earnings
You may want to know how much money you can make if you invest in a particular franchise. A franchisor isn’t required to disclose information about potential income or sales. If it does, the law requires it to have a reasonable basis for the claim when it’s made and to include the claim in Item 19 of the FDD. If a franchisor makes a claim that has a reasonable basis, the FDD also must disclose:
the source and limitations of data that support the claim
any important assumptions on which the claim is based
Be sure to ask the franchisor for written substantiation that supports the claim. The franchisor is required to provide substantiation if you ask. An accountant can help you determine whether the claims are reasonable, and if they apply to how you plan to operate your business.
A Consumer’s Guide to Buying a Franchise | The Franchise Disclosure Document
Before you invest in any franchise, get a copy of the franchisor’s Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD). Under the Franchise Rule enforced by the FTC, you must receive the document at least 14 days before you are asked to sign any contract or pay any money to the franchisor or an affiliate of the franchisor. You have the right to ask for — and get — a copy of the FDD once the franchisor has received your application and agreed to consider it. Indeed, you may want to get a copy of the franchisor’s FDD before you spend any money to investigate the franchise offering. The franchisor may give you a copy of its FDD on paper, via email, through a web page or on a disc. The cover of the FDD must provide information about the available formats. Make sure you have a copy of the FDD in a format that is convenient for you, and keep a copy for reference.
Read each of the 23 numbered “Items” in the FDD. Don’t be shy about asking for explanations, clarifications and answers to your questions before you invest.

How to Select a Franchise, What You Need to Know
Purchasing a franchise is like any other investment: it comes with risk. When you consider a particular franchise, think about demand for the products or services it offers, whether competitors offer similar products or services, the level of support you will receive and the franchisor’s reputation.
