We sadly report that former editor-in-chief Kim Marcus passed away. here he is in 1978 banging away at the one of the Selectric IIs we used in the newsroom. Kim preceded me as editor, & I knew him well at the office, but not so much socially. I can tell that I admired him for several reasons: He was very smart; serious about things like politics and social justice, and a very talented writer. I always knew he would be successful. Rest in peace Kim. I will never forget how generous you were in helping a newbie be better!

What year was Mr. Goldman's official retirement from Skyline? Was it 1990? I love color pictures of Him & Mrs. G. So many were B&W because of the press-room and facilities. If you have some color photos. please share!

Susan - hope you don't mind me posting this, I love how dedicated Mr. Goldman was to making the Skyline Press great -- actively recruiting stand out high school writers. I remember when he told me he had convinced Cheryl Parry to join my staff he said, "I've been trying to get her here for years!"

For everyone who came from near and far to attend Mr. Goldman's service on Friday: Wasn't it a great day! God decided it a special day for love and admiration and opened the normally cold and foggy skys in Colma and SF's Sunset to beautiful warm sunshine. To those who couldn't make it, don't fret. There was sadness, love, and reverence, and even some fun by former staffers who brought Skyline Press Photos and Sam's newsletters. There were thousands of hearts there, including yours. It was a beautiful service with 100+ people of all walks of his incredible life. Great seeing Scott Ludwig, Susan Surges Gifford, Nolan Apostle, Bob Dugoni, Tom Surges, Kim Marcus, Don Vetter YES Don Vetter (sorry I did't recognize you at first, bro,) and Chuck Bustillos; the great Mark Simon and many, many others. Another great tribute.

Just a bit shy of seven years ago, I met Sam and Adele Goldman at their home on 31st Avenue in San Francisco. We set out for Westlake Joe's restaurant in Daly City where the self-described "Ye Olde Wildest Journalism Instructor in the West" insisted on paying for everything.

It’s been at least 25 years since I last saw Sam Goldman — at least 10 since our last phone conversation — but I always knew he was out there, keeping tabs on me and making sure everything was OK. Friends and colleagues of mine would return to the Midwest following assignments in the Bay …
