If you’re in Oxford, make sure you see Andrew Holmes’s exhibition ‘Artist’s Drives’ at the Kendrick Barn Gallery, St John’s College. On until 10 December.

Circa’s new monograph on Andrew Holmes’s work, ‘Gas Tank City’, will be published in September.

The Oxford exhibition stems from Holmes’s fascination with the infrastructure of cities in the landscape of California. The show comprises twenty pencil drawings, and six large scale photographs from four series that he has been working on for fifty years. The images depict locations sited on the drive north on Route 99, travelled in the 1930s by the Dust Bowl migrant workers.
In addition to the familiar colour pencil drawings of Gas Tank City are a series of significant new black and white drawings based on John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress in which Pilgrim’s wife is re-imagined as a female California private detective visiting contemporary sites of the original trials. These are set in the context of two further smaller collections, of the road travelled viewed through the windscreen of a car at night, and an industrial landscape of huge steel tanks, seen as classical relics at the end of the era of oil.

Circa won two prizes at the Architectural Book of the Year Awards 2023.

The awards were launched this year by the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects, the Temple Bar Trust, and the World Architecture Festival. Books published in 2020, 2021 and 2022 were eligible. There were seven category winners and three special prizes. Circa had the distinction of winning two awards: for Evans + Shalev (Practice Monograph: Highly Commended) and Peter Cook – Speculations (Special Prize Winner)

Jury citation for Speculations – Peter Cook: Beautifully produced, this visual treat is a reminder of the power of architectural drawing and painting to inform the process of design, and to investigate conditions and contexts beyond conventional methods of analysis.

Editor Elin Eyborg Lund collected the award for Speculations from Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects president, Chris Dyson.
