AGRICULTURE & WATER IN THE WEST - This story encompasses so much of what is unfolding in the west with water, agriculture and desire to maintain the identity of a place. The Sulphur Springs Valley has been deeply divided over groundwater sustainability but they are taking it upon themselves to write their own story.

Thank you to Arizona State, the Lincoln Institute for Land Policy and the Babbitt Center for bringing us on to capture this place and the passionate folks who want to sustain their community

Do you know where your leafy greens and vegetables come from during the winter? This has been an awesome project to work on, and can’t thank the folks in Yuma enough for bringing us on. This short is part of a longer more in depth film still in production, but should give you an indication as to how advanced the industry in Yuma is, how efficient they are with water and how important they are for food in North America. Enjoy!

That’s a wrap in Yuma, AZ! 90% of North America’s leafy greens come from this area from November through April, but with cutbacks on the horizon for the Colorado River this is no longer a guarantee. This is one of the most efficient water user in the system and advanced agricultural industries in world. This is the best place to grow national food supply!

Thanks to for a good shoot, lots of laughs and filming this story with me!

https://www.keeprouttwild.com/mad-rabbit-trails The Forest Service's proposed plan will have detrimental impacts on the Routt National Forest's elk herds. I encourage folks to read the proposal, understand the science and consider the impacts to wildlife. Write in to encourage USFS to adopt a compromise. Habitat loss is permanent. Please help keep Routt and our elk wild and abundant.

The US Forest Service, with funding from the City of Steamboat Springs, is proposing a massive network of trails in Routt National Forest originally spanning from Mad Creek to Rabbit Ears Pass known as “Mad Rabbit”. Link to the project proposal is here.

Check out the latest film we produced for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. It was eye opening to film this massive migration of native fish that goes largely unnoticed. Hats off to the biologists and managers who are working incredibly hard to learn about these impressive fish and conserve these populations!

We're super excited to see this video launch! We recently had the opportunity to work with Mile High Labs to show off their collaboration with Tivoli Brewery Company and Willie's Reserve. Willie's Remedy is a brand new CBD infused seltzer hitting shelves and the road with Willie Nelson. Great to work with High Grove and The Social Goat to bring this collaboration to life!

We’ve filmed iconic species, rarely scene species and now we get to tell the story of the unknown and under appreciate. Here a flannelmouth sucker, one of the “3 species,” is captured on a weir, processed an tagged. Similar to salmon in the PNW, the 3 species migrate great distance to spawn and contribute greatly to the biomass of the Colorado River!

Last weekend I got to film a behavior I’ve been wanting to see for years. Another conservation success story, the Greater Prairie-Chicken has recovered from as few as 600 birds in Colorado. In the spring males gather at a lek to perform a rather unique courtship ritual. Things can get a little feisty at times!

What is the future of agriculture in the West?

Earlier this year we worked with the Babbitt Center, part of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, on a film highlighting two communities working on new approaches and innovative solutions. Thank you to everyone who worked on the film and the forward thinking conservationists who helped tell this story!

Thousands of sandhill cranes stop off in in the San Luis Valley each year as they make their seasonal migration north. When the birds leave their roosts in the morning, a chorus of bugles echoes through the valley and one by one they fly off to feed in nearby fields.

Gar-oo -oo! After listening to this orchestra echo through the San Luis Valley all day I can still hear a hundreds of birds bugling even though I left them hours ago - same effect of listening to waves crash on a beach all day. Awesome experience capturing these beautiful creatures along their travels.
