APD WARNS OF RENTAL SCAMS

The Andalusia Police Department is warning local residents to use extreme caution when using social media to find rental property after they have investigated several cases of fraud.

Lt. Jody Scott said there have been four or five cases in the past three months in which locals searching for a rental were contacted by someone alleging to live in Pensacola or Mobile and to own property here.

The scammers have located addresses here, broken in and changed locks, scheduled meetings with the person looking to rent, and given them a key and a lease agreement, Scott said. The scammers request payments through Cash App.

“The next thing the renters know, the real property owner figures out someone is moving into a house they own,” he said. “By then, the Facebook and Cash App accounts are shut down, and we have no way to trace them.”

Lt. Scott said one of the transactions occurred through Facebook Marketplace.

“I would be leary of using social media to do rental transactions, and we advise against paying rent by Cash App,” he said.

LBW Community College is proud to announce the addition of its first-ever Bass Fishing Team, providing a new avenue for students to excel.

Dr. Brock Kelley, President of LBW Community College, expressed enthusiasm about the addition of the Bass Fishing Team to the College’s roster of extracurricular activities offered.

“At LBW, we are dedicated to providing students with educational experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Introducing this bass fishing team aligns perfectly with our mission of supporting student success and personal growth. We look forward to seeing our student anglers thrive both on the water and in their academic pursuits.”

The team will consist of seasoned student anglers who will compete in college-level bass fishing tournaments with 2 and 4-year colleges and universities.

Instructor Shaun Moore, who will serve as the club advisor, said, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to guide and mentor the talented individuals who will make up the first fishing team at LBW. Fishing is not only a sport but also a passion that fosters discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship. I am confident that our program will make waves in the collegiate fishing community and make LBW proud."

The first tournament is scheduled for Fall 2024.

**Important information concerning Alabama’s New Hands-Free Law**

Enforcement Period - ALEA will begin enforcing Alabama’s New Hands-Free Law beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2024.

Cell Phone Defined - Wireless telecommunication device – The law defines a cellular telephone, a portable telephone, a text-messaging device, a personal digital assistant, a stand-alone computer, a global positioning system receiver, or substantially similar portable wireless device that is used to initiate or receive communication, information, or data.

Not a Secondary Violation – Individuals observed crossing in and out of a traffic lane without using a turn signal, swerving, or otherwise operating the vehicle in an impaired manner while physically holding a wireless telecommunication device could be issued a citation.

Fines and Punishments – First conviction fine of $50- and one-point violation on license, second conviction fine of $100- and two-point violation on license, third conviction $150- and three-point violation on license within a 24-month period.

Holding a wireless communications device while driving may result in a citation if you swerve, change lanes without signaling, or otherwise operate a vehicle in what the law describes as “an impaired manner.” However, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency would like to remind you that any behavior that distracts or takes away your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle is dangerous. Distracted driving causes crashes and ultimately puts the lives of those operating vehicles on Alabama’s roadways at risk.

Banner Walking Tour to be held this Saturday

The Covington Veterans Foundation will present Step Into History: Veterans Tribute Walking Tour, on Saturday, May 25th at 10 a.m. at the Covington Veterans Memorial. This tour will highlight the stories and sacrifices of those who died from our area in our nation’s conflicts. Among these are Comer Wilson who died aboard the U.S.S. Arizona at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was the first from Covington County killed in World War II. The last local serviceman killed in the war was Captain Perry Balkom, pilot of a B-29 heavy bomber that crashed after a raid on Japan on August 8, 1945. Balkom was lost two days after the first atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima and the day before the second at Nagasaki. The Japanese Emperor would announce his nation’s surrender a week later.

Others who fell in the Korean, Vietnam and later wars will be honored by having their stories told. The Covington Veterans Foundation currently has memorial banners for all those lost from this area in the Vietnam and later conflicts. It is currently working to obtain more pictures of those killed in the Second World War to produce a banner for those servicemen.

The tour should last about an hour and is free to all who wish to attend. The tour will be handicap accessible. Please muster at the Veterans Memorial behind city hall at 9:45.
