The LUX Audience Award is the annual version of an EU Oscar. It is led by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, in partnership with the European Commission and Europa Cinemas. The award celebrates European cinema and its aim is to raise awareness of Europe’s social, political and cultural issues. Nevertheless, read on!

The films rarely sound like a barrel of laughs, though last year’s selection included the Triangle of Sadness, which included that funny moment when the male model transitions from the unapproachable Balenciaga look to the H&M cheap and happy look – google it.

Together takes a look at the short list for the prestigious prize that celebrates European cinema The LUX Audience Award is the annual version of an EU

Located in the eastern part of Switzerland in the canton of Graubünden, near the border with Austria, at about 1,800 metres the Swiss village of Samnaun is a winter sports paradise offering direct access to over 238 kilometres of groomed slopes and 44 ski lifts which comprise the Silvretta Arena. The village is linked with Ischgl in Austria, but offers a more sedate base than its more boisterous Austrian neighbour from which to enjoy the world class skiing and first rate winter sports infrastructure of the area. Its predominantly south facing slopes mean that its visitors generally get to enjoy sunnier mornings on the slopes and on windy or stormy days when the high border is impassable due to closed lifts guests can still enjoy the less populated slopes of the Swiss side of the Silvretta Arena.

Mark Browne explores this historic and lively neighbourhood of central New York.

A district of New York that earned its intriguing moniker of “Hell’s Kitchen” in the 19th century, this neighbourhood on the west side of midtown Manhattan has a rich history that reflects the evolution of the city. Stretching from 34th Street in the south to 59th street in the north, 8th avenue in the east and the Hudson River to the west, the area was traditionally one of the toughest in New York and its development was heavily shaped by the characters that called it home, including dockers and gangsters of the infamous “Westie” gang in particular. The exact origins of the name “Hell’s Kitchen” are unclear but are believed to reflect its historic reputation as a place where mischief and vice were concocted!

The quest for snow surety has driven the development of once remote hamlets high in the Alps. This has certainly been the case with Gurgl in Ötztal, western Austria. Known as the “Diamond of the Alps”.

The neighbouring villages of Obergurgl and Hochgurgl which together make up the Gurgl ski area, have been expanded substantially in recent years to cater for the demand for premium level resorts and take advantage of the surrounding snowy slopes. These range in altitude from 1,800 metres to over 3,000 metres and this lofty altitude ensures that the resort is among the first to open each season – typically in mid November – and also that it can continue to operate all the way until mid-April.

Mark Browne explored a diamond of a ski resort - through a unique crystal lens! The quest for snow surety has driven the development of once remote

The Green Door Gallery brings the work of Irish artist Gillian Murphy to Brussels.

Gillian Murphy divides her time working between her studios in Valentia, County Kerry in the South West of Ireland, and Dublin. Working in a variety of media, most of the paintings in this exhibition are rendered using cold wax and oil on panels. This is a multi-layered technique lends itself beautifully to Murphy’s exquisite rendering of the misty landscapes and the dramatic wave formations of the Atlantic ocean.

The Korean Cultural Center Brussels has inaugurated its first exhibition of 2024, a unique showcase of Korean traditional culture encapsulated within three distinct “boxes”.

The boxes are themed around the Hanok, a traditional Korean house. The boxes are replicas of traditional Korean elements, offering visitors a glimpse into three aspects of Korean life: one box represents the life of a man, another the life of a woman, and the third encapsulates general Korean culture. Each box is a microcosm of various unique elements. The exhibition will also feature traditional instruments and skillfully crafted furniture. Additionally, visitors are invited to partake in a Hanbok experience, where guests can try on traditional clothing and capture the moment with photographs. This exhibition promises a comprehensive and immersive journey into the heart of Korean culture.

The Netflix series, The Queen’s Gambit, resulted in a surge of interest in chess. Increasingly, women are becoming more involved in the game. Catherine Feore met with Luxembourgish, Woman International Master and chess commentator Fiona Steil-Antoni.

Steil-Antoni started playing chess when she was eight or nine years old. She was inspired by her father: “He had a passion for chess, he had so many chess books. He would sit over the chess board and play through games, sometimes a friend would come over to play friendly games. Eventually, I asked my dad to teach me the rules and I very much enjoyed playing. My younger brother also started playing.”
