CHAPTER 15

The huge man dressed in a security attire opened the gate. You can come in he said opening the gate wide for Lebechi and Osundu to go in.

The compound was wide and looking classic. The huge security man wasn't the only one inside. There were more security men standing around inside the compound who were armed. By the left were flashy cars which were looking neatly kept under a shade. The building looked high from it's design.

The affluence the building radiated kept Osundu in awe.

If really Nneka and Erinma are in a perfect condition inside this house then I guess I've just hit the jackpot Osundu said within himself.

This way please, the security man said pointing towards the door of the entrance for Osundu and Lebechi.

Mama....
Nneka shouted rushing out and hugging her. Erinma ran out too..

How did you...
How did you get here..

Osundu walked in smiling sheepishly at Nneka.

Nneka went and gave Osundu a hug too. Seeing him and Mama has just given her hope. Erinma hugged Lebechi and Lebechi could feel tears rolling down the cheeks of her daughters.

What is the matter?
You girls are enjoying your life in this mansion and you wanted to kill me with thoughts in the village Lebechi said holding her heart.

Mama Erinma called.

Then Isioma walked into the living room smiling...

Good evening Mama she greeted Lebechi with a smile.

Welcome to my brothers house she said spreading her arms wide open.

Both Erinma and Nneka looked at Isioma with a shock. They couldn't understand why she just lied.

Mama, let's go to my room Erinma said holding Lebechi by her hand.

Isioma looked at her then shook her head slowly from left to right. Nneka also held Osundu and they all went into Erinma's big room.

Erinma and Nneka sat on the sofa with Osundu leaving the bed for Lebechi to sit on.

What about your phones? Why haven't you girls been picking up my calls? Lebechi asked with a concerned countenance.

Mama let me get you something to eat then I'll answer all your questions Erinma said trying to hide the tears that wanted to fall out.

I'm not hungry, I've just eaten before getting here. I'll eat later. Just tell me why you girls haven't been responsive on your calls.

Mama we will give you the answer you want, if you give us some answers.

Answers to what Lebechi asked looking at her two girls.

Mama, why didn't my blood match with that of Nneka? Is there anything you're keeping from us? Erinma asked.

Lebechi heaved a sigh then continued...

I and your dead father may his soul rest in peace had promised to raise you girls as sisters and our daughters.

So we are really not sisters? Erinma and locked eyes with Nneka then back to Lebechi.

Yes... But I have taken you girls as mine and nothing is going to change that..

So mama tell us the story Nneka said and wiped off the tear that wanted to roll down her cheek.

Lebechi heaved a sigh again and then looked away.

~~~ Flashback ~~~ ( Many years ago )

A year after I got married to your father, I couldn't take in or conceive a child of my own. Your father wasn't concerned because he believed that God will surely grant us our heart desires some day.

That faithful day, we had gone to our farm which was a distance away. Most times we go with our neighbors who had farmland in such areas because of how quiet it was. But that day, most of our neighbors weren't strong enough to go to the farm with us. I told my husband to postponed it till the next day. He insisted he wanted to go to the farm.

My husband was working while I had gone to get him water as he instructed.

A lady ran into our farmland carrying a newly born baby. She was sweating profusely and blood was all over her clothes. I got so scared.

My husband went towards the lady in bid to help her, she handed the baby over to my husband.

Please take care of her, take her as your own. Call her Nneka.. the lady said in tears and ran into a different location.

We heard some noise coming towards our location. Seemed like people were looking for the lady.

We carried the little baby and ran into hiding. Few minutes later, we couldn't hear any sound. The little baby was looking at us and smiling so cutely. She made no noise when we went into hiding.

My husband suggested we take the baby home and claimed it to be ours.

We will tell them you gave birth in the farm my husband said to me .

When I tried asking him how people will believe me when my stomach wasn't protruded. He said we will make them believe.

When we got back, my husband broke the news to people, some doubted while some believed. Those who doubted couldn't explain either the source of the baby.

Few weeks later, my husband had gone back to our farm and the nearest village. He searched and searched. He asked questions here and there but no one knew about the lady. She ended being a mystery.

My husband came back and told me he couldn't find the lady who had handed Nneka into his arms. A year later, I took in and gave birth to you Erinma. Nneka brought luck into our lives, unlike others who will be ungrateful. We raised you girls together as ours. No one ever knew you girls weren't sisters because we never treated you differently Lebechi said smiling as a tear rolled down her cheek. She wiped it off looking at both Erinma and Nneka who were already looking emotional.

Nneka ran and hugged Lebechi and Erinma joined too.

Thanks a lot for being my life saver mama, I love you so much mama Nneka said.

After a few seconds of the hug, they untangled themselves from Lebechi.

But, how did you know your blood didn't match?
Did you visit the hospital?
What happened?
Now tell me my children, what happened to your phones? Lebechi asked staring at Nneka then at Erinma.

Mama Erinma called softly...

* A knock came on the door...

It was Ikem,

Good evening Mama he greeted with a mild smile.

It was night already and no one noticed because of the story Lebechi was telling.

Good evening My son...
Good evening sir Erinma and Nneka greeted too.

Mama, I heard you came so I decided to come greet you Ikem said still smiling.

Thank you my in-law Lebechi greeted with a smile too.

Good evening sir Osundu greeted lastly. Ikem walked towards him and they had a hand shake.

And your are??? He asked still holding Osundu.

I'm Nneka's fiancé Osundu answered with a smile.

You must have really come a long way, but what is a man doing in the midst of women's discussion?

Come on man, let's go talk like men Ikem said with a smile.

Osundu looked at Nneka who shook her head from left to right for him not to go.

Osundu made a sign to Nneka that everything will be okay. Then he walked out of the room with Ikem.

CHAPTER 14

Knock knock knock ( someone knocking on the door)

Nneka looked at Erinma and she was sleeping. She waited and listened...

The knock came again on the door softly. Nneka stood up and walked towards the door, she placed her ears on the door trying to figure out who was at the door.

I know you can hear me the voice who sounded like that of Ndidi said from the door.

Nneka was surprised how she knew she was already at the door.

Ndidi??? Nneka called softly..

Yes I'm the one she answered..

Your mother... Your mother... Ndidi said with a voice like someone who was coming from a marathon race.

What about my mother Nneka asked curiously.

Your was mother was involved in a ghastly car accident on her way here..

And .. and ..

And what Nneka asked not being able to control her patience anymore.

She died on the spot Ndidi answered.

No no it can't be Nneka said shaking her head. And taking few steps away from the door.

Of course , it is what it is. You were warned but you never listened Ndidi said and started laughing out evilly..

Mama can't die , mama cannot die Nneka cried out dragging her hairs with her two hands and sobbing bitterly.

Nneka...
Nneka Someone kept tapping and calling.

Nneka opened her eyes and it was Erinma.

Thank God, thank God it was just a dream Nneka said holding her heart. What happened? What did you dream about?
Did you see the ladies in red?

No no..
It's Mama...
Ndidi...

What happened to mama and Ndidi Erinma asked curiously.

The lights went off, it then suddenly started blinking. Then it went off again.

Nneka could see someone staring at her in the dark. Her heart started pounding because the eyes was coming closer. She was scared out of her wits, her tears dried up and she held Erinma tightly.

Tell me I'm seeing things Nneka said still holding Erinma.

No you are not Nneka I'm seeing it too Erinma said with a teary voice. Nneka and Erinma could feel their heart racing.

The lights came back on and there was actually no one there.

What have I gotten myself into Erinma cried out then lay on the floor sobbing bitterly.

The girls slept off in their own tears.

Someone opened the door. It was morning already and Isioma was standing in front of the door.

Erinma and Nneka opened their eyes.

Your mother is on her way. We will let her get here. You're asked to put on your best behavior. Remember, you'll have to tell her to go back for your own safety. If anyone of you divulges what's going on here to her, you know what comes next Isioma said with a mild smile.

You both can leave here and go clean up like nothing ever happened Isioma said again and walked out on the girls.

But how did they know Mama is coming?
Does it mean that I was selected before Ikem came to get married to me?
How did I put myself inside this torment Erinma asked Nneka and tears rolled down her cheeks.

These people are evil, Erinma. They are devils. I still wonder how mama will get here, I never told her the address of where I was going to.
But what if mama really comes into this house?
What are we going to do?
Are we going to pretend all is okay and let mama go back or we will risk it all and tell Mama what's going on Nneka asked Erinma who tears just rolled down her cheeks.

Lebechi left for the city with Osundu. It was a very long drive including traffics which took most of their time. When they arrived in the city. Osundu found a place where he could buy food for Lebechi to eat, Since Lebechi wasn't the type that eats junk food in traveling buses.

When they arrived at the eatery, Osundu left Lebechi seated outside, he had also left her bag beside her. He went in to get what she will eat. He came back with one bowl of food for Lebechi. He kept it on the table for her. Though she said she wasn't hungry, Osundu insisted she eats something before they continue their journey as she hasn't eaten anything since the morning.

Lebechi managed to take a few scoops of the food. When she was done, it was time for them to continue their journey. Osundu tried to pick the bag up from where he had kept it but he couldn't find it there...

Mama... Who took your bag I had left here? Osundu asked pointing at the spot beside Lebechi.

Lebechi looked around in awe, she was lost in her own thoughts and her bag has been stolen. Osundu went back to check if he had left the bag inside but nothing was there.

A young lady came towards Osundu and tapped him.

Sir, it's one of these area boys that took the bag. That's how they behave here and we can't alert you. If we do, we will be the next target she said and walked out.

Osundu stood still then heaved a heavy sigh. Mama is okay, let's just get going he said and held Lebechi up.

When they left the eatery, Osundu asked questions and was given directions. He boarded a taxi, he couldn't be walking around on foot with Lebechi.

When they arrived, the location matched the one that Nneka had showed him.

Mama, I think this is the place Osundu said pointing at the big gate in front of him.

Then knock let they open the gate for us Lebechi said with her hands akimbo.

Osundu knocked on the gate and someone opened it. He was hug and dressed in a security man outfit.

Yes who are you and what are you looking for he asked Osundu.

Ummmhh is this Ikem's house? Lebechi asked softly...

Yes, how can we help you the man asked.

I'm looking for my daughters Erinma and Nneka Lebechi said with a worried contenance.

Wait here the man said and walked back into the house.

CHAPTER 13

Erinma...

Nneka called softly taking few steps back. Her heartbeat kept racing like a rusty car picking it's heat. She took more steps backwards and the tears in her eyes were drying out.

Why are you ...
Why are you holding a knife?
Why is She dressed in red just like the ladies in your dream?
Have I finally gone crazy? .what is happening? Nneka said holding her two hands on her head then pointing at Isioma with shaky hands.

Erinma shook her and tears rolled down her cheeks in pity for her Nneka.

Erinma took few steps forward then pointed at Isioma who was smiling evilly.

She... she is among the ladies in red. She said I was still so important to them. A baby will soon be growing within me. I will have a child to be called mine. I won't be barren anymore Erinma said holding her hand on her stomach.

And... Mama...
Mama is still alive , mama is alive in the village. Everything will come back to normal, but for all these, the price to pay is your blood Nneka. I've been told so many times that you're not my blood.

I have to choose between Mama and you Erinma said and tears began rolling down her cheeks again.

Mama...
Mama is still alive?
Have I been seeing things?
Where really are we Erinma?
What really is happening? Nneka asked in shock and sat down on the floor already tired of life and tears ran down her cheeks.

I don't know Nneka... I have no answer to any of those questions. All I want is for Mama to be alive Erinma said and started sobbing.

Nneka went into a kneeling position, she held her neck up and stared at Erinma.

They say we are not sisters...
But that's what they said.. To me Erinma, you'll remain my one and only sister Nneka said in tears. They said we are not related by blood Erinma, but to me you're my younger sister. I remember how we do argue alot, the memories we have shared can never be erased. If taking my life will make you live your dream life and keep mama alive. Then I gladly give up my life Nneka said. Then she turned back and tears rained down her cheeks.

Erinma moved closer to Nneka with the knife in her hand.

Isioma who has been watching the sisters kept smiling as they both cried out rivers.

Surprisingly, Erinma moved back towards Isioma and pointed the knife at her.

What are you doing? Isioma asked in absolute shock.

What were you expecting?
That I'll kill my sister again?
How can I make the wrong choice twice?

You Isioma, you killed my child,
You put me through so much pains,
That was not enough for you, I always thought you were a saint. I thought you felt for me when I hugged you..
I never knew I was inside the arms of a devil.
What makes you think I'll ever believe your words ever again? Erinma said with tears rolling down her cheeks and still walking towards Isioma with the knife pointed at her.

Isioma ran out from the room seeing Erinma pushing towards her with a knife.

Erinma dropped the knife and ran back to her sister. She hugged her and they both continued crying.

I don't care if you are not my sister, I would not do anything to cause you hurt again Erinma said and continued shedding tears.

But what of Mama? Won't she die? How can we save Mama Nneka asked wiping her tears.

Someone closed the door where the sisters were. It was Isioma, she locked the door with a key.

You have made a big mistake, you made the wrong choice. You should have just finished her off. Let me break this to you, your mother will be coming here tomorrow where she will meet her doom Isioma said and laughed loudly.

Isioma's footsteps faded away leaving the sisters in deep fear.

To Lebechi it was as if the morning was never coming, she kept sleeping and waking at intervals. At times she will pick up her phone and try her daughters numbers hoping to find luck but it still doesn't go through.

Lebechi will pray and go back to bed. At a point, the sleep disappeared from her eyes completely. She got up and started getting ready to travel.

As the heavens brightened up slowly, Lebechi was already seated outside all dressed and waiting for Osundu. She wanted to call him on phone but decided not to add pressure.

Who knows, it might all be a wrong feeling. They may arrive at the city and find out that everything is going well. But still the feeling that something was really wrong still keep getting stronger.

Lebechi was still seated outside lost in her thoughts. She kept wondering if Ikem was a ritualist to have appeared in her dreams threatening to kill her girls.

Mama Good morning Osunda greeted Lebechi who got shaken.

Good morning my son Lebechi answered holding her heart.

Mama, I'm sorry I came out late. I had to visit my company and submit what I was working on all night then take permission proper. But it's all good now mama, we can leave Osundu said.

Lebechi went and locked her door. Then she came out with a little bag and a bible. She kept the bag on the bench and kept fitting the Bible into it.

Mama, this one you are carrying a big Bible? Osundu asked helping her fit the Bible into the bag.

I just have a this feeling that it will be needed Lebechi said and heaved a sigh.

It's okay Mama, I've zipped it up Osundu said and lifted the bag. And they both left for the city.

CHAPTER 12

Wait...
Don't do it please...
Isioma said and walked into the kitchen where Erinma was. She came closer and took the knife away from Erinma who was sobbing bitterly.

You are still so important to us and we wouldn't like to loose you. Very soon a child will start growing within you.

A child?
A child that will be taken from me?? Erinma asked holding her stomach and still crying. Isioma hugged Erinma tightly . Erinma wiped her tears to look at Isioma who was consoling her.

Erinma's eyes opened in amazement..
She quickly stood up.. Isioma was putting on red just like the ladies in her dreams.

Erinma took few steps backwards...

Stay away from me...
Stay away...
Please Tell me I'm seeing things.
Who are you ?
Where am I?
Are you among them?
So you have been deceiving us all these while? Erinma said and tears rolled down her cheeks.

All I said have been nothing but the truth Erinma...
The only difference was that I didn't tell you the whole story.. Isioma said still holding the knife she had collected from Erinma.

You didn't tell me the whole story?

Listen Erinma, let me tell you the whole story..

This is reality Erinma, all what Nneka had seen is going to happen. So you have a choice now to stop it or your mother is going to die.

That's not all, You have found favor in the sight of the ladies in red. Unlike me, your babies won't be taken anymore. But there is just one thing to do Isioma said walking slowly towards Erinma.

Your sister Nneka can't be killed by you spiritually because she is not your blood. You need to kill her physically Isioma said and handed the knife back to Erinma.

I can't... I can't do it Erinma said in tears.

You have to choose between your false sister, your babies and your mother Erinma. Let me tell you another secret, you're not the second wife of Ikem.

Where are they? Erinma asked and her heartbeat increased.

Nneka was taken into a room having a dim light. She was left on the floor as she soaked her clothes with her tears. She couldn't tell how she had managed to find herself in hell. She couldn't imagine how Ikem had killed her mother so soon. It all seemed like a dream playing out in front of her.

She remembered Osundu... She had showed him the address before she left. Osundu loves her so much and may come looking for her. She was scared of his life.

The door opened slowly, Nneka saw that it was Erinma. She stood up and ran towards her sister. What have we gotten ourselves into? How are we going to get out from here alive? Nneka asked Erinma with tears still hugging her.

Erinma was mute and just kept sobbing bitterly.

Nneka opened her eyes and saw someone was standing behind Erinma.

It was Isioma putting on red clothes just like the ladies Erinma explained to her she sees in her dreams.

She untangled her hands from Erinma who just stood still shedding tears. Nneka took few steps backwards and saw Erinma holding a knife.

I'm so sorry....
I'm so sorry Erinma said shaking her head and sobbing bitterly.

Take me instead...
Please, take me and do what you want with me Lebechi begged going on her knees and holding her hands together.

Ikem was dressed in white which had blood stains all over. He was holding a knife, he had placed the knife on Erinma's neck.

What if I take this one instead Ikem said and started walking towards Nneka. Who was also tied to a spot.

Please...
Please don't.
Don't take any of my children, they are all I have ... Please Lebechi kept begging with tears rolling down her cheeks.

But she is not your biological daughter.. she doesn't have your blood, who is she to you? Ikem asked holding the knife more closer to Erinma.

She's.... She's.. Lebechi kept stammering...

Ikem raised the knife high up and ready smite Nneka with it.

Jesus...
Jesus...

Lebechi shouted then she woke up breathing heavily. She was also sweating profusely.

Lebechi wiped her face... it was a dream, it was just a dream Lebechi said to herself still breathing heavily...

This is not an ordinary dream. My girls must be in trouble. I know this feeling I'm having is not normal.

Lebechi went on her kneels immediately. Then she started praying for her girls safety where ever they were. After so many minutes of prayers, she switched on her phone. The time was 11:40pm.

Lebechi dialed Nneka's number, when she called it. It didn't go through. She tried that of Erinma and it still didn't go through. Lebechi started to feel so uneasy. She thought about calling Osundu but the time was late. She decided to try to see if he was still awake.

She called Osundu on phone It didn't ring long, Osundu picked.

Osundu: Mama this one you're calling me by this time? I hope all is well.

Lebechi: Osundu I just want to let you know that I have this feeling that my girls are not okay... They are not okay ( Started crying)

Osundu: Mama is okay, remember I told you I'll be going there tomorrow. So you have nothing to worry about.

Lebechi: I will be going with you. I can't stay here any longer. We need to pray before leaving, something is really wrong.

Osundu: Mama, I was actually rounding off with the work I was doing. I will put them in prayers before going to bed. Don't worry so much, we will go meet them tomorrow okay?

Lebechi: Okay ( wiping her tears)

Osundu: Goodnight mama

(Hangs up)

CHAPTER 11

Ikem walked in and smiled at Nneka Evilly , Nneka couldn't hold it back any longer. She ran towards Ikem and started hitting him. Some guards came in and held Nneka who kept forcing herself out of their grip.

Who are you Ikem?
Are you a devil?
Where is this? Are we in hell?
Why will you do this to us...

Tell me what I saw in your room is not true.
Tell me the dead body I saw under your bed was not that of my mother. Tell me that I am seeing things. Tell me this is all a dream Nneka said and cried out bitterly.

Like I said earlier, people will ask questions. But we have answers, you died before arriving here and Erinma died during child birth Ikem said with a smile.

Incase you're not aware, Isioma is pregnant and you know what that means. Ikem said again. He made a sign for his guards and they dragged Nneka out of the room.

Erinma lost her speech, she just sat on the floor sobbing after hearing what Nneka said. Does it mean that when they rejected Nneka they took her mother just like they did that of Isioma.

What has she brought upon her family.

Ikem came to where Erinma was lying on the floor sobbing. He carried her and placed her on the bed. He did what he came for not minding the pains Erinma was in.

He left the room when he was done.

Erinma continued sobbing bitterly. She stood up from the bed and started begging her mother to forgive her for not listening. For putting them all through the troubles.
The pain became unbearable for Erinma, she had turned into a baby factory and her sister is on the verge of loosing her life.

Nneka had seen the dead body of her mother under Ikem's bed, it was best if she ended it all.

She opened the door and went into the kitchen. She picked a knife with shaky hands.

Erinma went on her knees in tears, then she raised the knife up.

Lebechi was seated outside in a cold evening. It felt as if something was wrong somewhere. Things just didn't feel right. She has not heard from Erinma ever since Nneka went to visit her. Nneka had told her that Erinma was busy when she had called. Yet it's the second day and Erinma had not cared to call her neither do Nneka.

Does it mean that for the few months Erinma has been married to Ikem she had not taken in. If there was any problem , why didn't she reach out to her. Something must be wrong somewhere she said within herself. She became restless all of a sudden. She couldn't actually place her hands on anything.

She went back inside the house and took her phone. She dialed Erinma's number to know why she had abandoned her mother all those while without reaching out. She tried Erinma's number so many times but it just wouldn't go through. She decided to call that of Nneka. She called and called but it wouldn't go through. Now lebechi became convinced that something was wrong. Ikem was a rich man and it wasn't possible that there will be no light in his house. Worst still, she doesn't have Ikem's number. Erinma never gave it to her.

Someone walked in on Lebechi in her sad state...

Good evening Mama...

Osundu greeted seeing Lebechi seated outside.

Good evening my son...
How are you doing? Lebechi asked.

I'm doing good Mama. What about you? This one you're looking sad and sitting outside, I hope all is well? Osundu asked taking a seat beside Lebechi.

I don't know my son, I just feel as if something is wrong somewhere. This is the second day Nneka travelled to go see Erinma, yet I have not heard from Erinma. I'm so worried Lebechi said with a sad face.

Mama, I have come for the same reason. I am so worried, Nneka told me before travelling. She told me she will call me when she gets to her location. When Nneka arrived, she sent me a message that she got to her location safely. I wanted to call her but I decided it was best to allow her some moments with her sister.

But all through the night, Nneka never came online to text me. The next morning, I had called Nneka and her number wasn't available. I tried again later in the day yet her number didn't go through. She hasn't come online either. I'm so worried Osundu said with a disheartening look.

What do you think my son? What should we do? Lebechi asked.

I think I'll go looking for Nneka, I don't know what I'll do if anything happens to her. I love her so much Osundu said.

But my son,
Don't you think it's so early?
What if it is network? I think we should wait till tomorrow . I know God won't allow anything to happen to my girls.

Mama, I know God is looking after them, but I can't wait anymore. Nneka had shown me the location on her phone before she left. If I wait till the night is over, and I don't get any calls I'll leave the next morning to go find Nneka Osundu said and heaved a sigh.

Mama hope you've eaten, take care of yourself okay?
Just put us all in prayers. We know the prayer of a mother has so many effects Osundu said with a smile trying to cheer Lebechi up.

Thank you so much my son Lebechi said to Osundu who stood up and took his leave.

Lebechi stood up looked at heaven opening her two hands. She said somethings and went into her house.
