Late Spring (a love story)

I carefully stuck my head through the half-open window: indeed, the wind caressing my cheeks was mild. However, light gray veils of cloud covered the sun, whose rays only occasionally broke through. Nevertheless, I packed my sunglasses in my backpack and left the apartment in anticipation of the beautiful Saturday. Spring was so late this time that I didn't want to miss a second.

The street café on the market square was not even half occupied at this time. I chose a table outside right at the entrance to get a good view of the place. Most of the fruit and vegetable stands were already set up and the first shoppers strolled past the peculiar wooden stalls.

I was pensively watching the beautiful scenery when someone next to me called out, "What can I get you?"

The awkward waiter seemed new here. I would have noticed this mischievous grin and the tousled out-of-bed look otherwise. A little awkwardly he placed the serving tray on the bistro table. He overlooked my purse, which fell down. Embarrassed, he picked it up but held it so clumsily that the entire contents clattered onto the cobblestones.

I had trouble not laughing out loud. Instead, I helped the waiter, who turned bright red in the face, to pick up my keys and all the many things that are in a handbag. As he handed me the sunglass case, he accidentally touched my forearm. I was electrified. What was that? He, too, stopped in astonishment. I felt like I was out of time for a few seconds. With him.

A week later I was sitting on the terrace of my favorite café again at spring-like 20°C. I found myself looking around for the clumsy waiter. Suddenly, there was a loud banging from inside the café. I had to grin. Shortly afterwards, when the waiter served me a cappuccino without being asked, I held the table tightly to be on the safe side.

Then I took heart: "May I invite you to a cocktail at the Green Bar tonight?"

The caipirinha tasted excellent. A breeze blew the scent of gorse into the bar through the open door. I glanced at my watch nervously: my appointment was almost 30 minutes overdue! A thousand thoughts went through my head. Perhaps I had been too bold with him in the café after all? Or is it because I'm a few years older than him? I sipped my cocktail thoughtfully. The siren of an ambulance could now be heard from outside, and flickering blue lights illuminated the entrance area of the bar.

With a few other guests of the bar, I stepped out of the door curiously. Ambulances and police cars were parked about 10 m away. A battered bicycle could be seen on the ground. Two paramedics heaved a man with a bleeding forehead onto their stretcher. I froze in shock: That's the waiter! I walked over worried. The paramedics were about to push the stretcher into the ambulance. I frantically shouted "Stop!" and stopped by the stretcher.

The waiter recognized me immediately and grinned broadly at me.

"You see, I'm not just clumsy at serving."

The paramedics pushed the stretcher into the ambulance. I pretended to be the injured man's friend and was allowed to sit in the back with him. On the way to the hospital it happened again: there was tension in the air that had an electrifying effect. And somehow we fell out of time again as we looked at each other in silence and I was holding his hand.

A few days later, Benny put my cappuccino on the bistro table - without knocking anything over.

I smiled at him appreciatively. "Are you sticking with tonight? 8 p.m. with me?"

Benny nodded. The plaster on his forehead made him look kind of daring. Suddenly he leaned down and kissed me quickly on the mouth.

"I didn't want to wait that long," he called out and quickly disappeared inside the café.

But I took a deep breath and enjoyed the late spring with skin and hair.
