National Defense Industry Association's
SO/LIC 2019 - (Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict)

The 2019 National Defense Industry Association SO/LIC (Special Operations – Low Intensity Conflict) symposium with a theme of “One SOCOM: Synchronizing Policy, Modernization, and Operations, was held at the HYATT Chrystal City in Arlington, VA February 5-7th 2019.

A star studded event for the SOF community with Keynote address by the Honorable Scott Taylor, Navy Seal and former U.S. House of Representatives, along with a conversation with Assistant Secretary of Defense Owen West made for a great symposium for the defense industry.

A panel discussion on “Rapid Prototyping in SOF Equipment” with Tambrein Bates, director of SOFWERX driving home the need for innovation and reaching outside of the box. “If it’s a hot dog that doesn’t work, don’t come back with a frankfurter and try to drive that home as the next great innovation. Research the market, know what’s out there and most of all, risk the rejection and come back again with something even better that we can all get on board with”.

SOF’s role in “Irregular Warfare” made for an interesting discussion lead by Deputy Assistant Secretary for Special Operations Andrew Knaggs, followed by “Combating Terrorism”, to “Evolutions in the Cyber Domain”. For those in attendance, it was eye opening to hear the panel discussion on the current state of cyber threats focused on America. With the lack of action of the previous White House administration the discussion evolved around how threat countries have moved well ahead of the US and are not slowing down.

With the funding and hands on training Isis and other terrorist organization are receiving, it became quite apparent that things are serious. The positive take away was that in the last 12 months, the agencies have seen a dramatic turn in cyber focus from the current White House administration. A renewed and urgent energy is felt through all branches and the importance of the SOF community’s involvement in Cyber training could not be more apparent.

“Rapid Acquisition in the Real World - Fielding Quickly For The Warfighter’s Real Time Needs” hit home for a lot of us and the issues of government red tape. As we know SOF is an early adopter of technology, and recent developments in the SOF community are impressive. But when warfighters test gear and then seek acquisitions, it’s another story. There is no doubt that red tape has to be cut more quickly for the SOF community and the advanced gear in hand, sooner, then later!

SOF is not what is used to be, especially from just a decade ago. The panel discussion on the advances in AI (Augmented Reality) to Robotics and Unmanned Technology gave an Incite to the future of the SOF community, the training and engagement. It’s fair to say, the future skills of the SOF operator skills will be unmatched like never before.

Human Performance seems to be a popular topic at current SOF events, to the future of the Digital Battlefield. As the three day symposium wrapped up, it was never more apparent that the future of SOF is evolving and with the ever changing world of emerging technology, never more important is it than now for the defense industry and government to work closely together to give every operator in the field, every advantage they can have.

NDIA Awards banquet saw the R. Lynn Rylander award presented to ADM Eric Olson, Former Commander U.S. Special Operations Command and Four-Star Admiral Navy SEAL. Deprospero Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to VADM Joseph Maguire, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, followed by the Superior Achievement Award Winners for the evening.

There was no doubt that this year’s symposium was “ONE SOF”. Pre 9/11 it was unusual for units to be talking or training with one another, let alone one branch working with another branches’ SOF unit. Today, it’s not uncommon that each SOF unit is equipped with the same equipment, the different branches have a line of communication between them, and from mobility, survivability to lethality, it’s never more important to work together as ONE SOF!

"Operation Barbecue Relief".. 24 April 2019. Folks, proud to announce that'll be joining Jay Collins a retiring Green Beret and combat wounded left leg amputee as he crosses America on the "Breaking Bread" tour. By running, biking and hand cycling across America from Los Angeles to Tampa Florida, this expected 50 day journey will have us stopping in cities across the country feeding First Responders (Fire, EMS & LEO) and those in need. We plan to arrive in Tampa just in time for the Warrior Games.
