Aloha Elder Dean Davies!
In your email response dated April 28, 2021, to Ke Kula o Lāʻie’s plea to stop the development in our sacred Lāʻie mountains, you stated: “…those who are highly in favor of the project, including Hawaiian residents and government officials who embrace the way this is proposed from an environmental perspective…”
We, the indigenous descendants and long-time residents living in Lāʻie, along with our neighboring communities and friends/ohana around the world, ask that you fairly give recognition to our unheard voices that carry the burdensome weight of the ongoing concerns of the adverse environmental impact that this development will add to the already existing problems we are already having to deal with. Flooding, erosion, and pollution to our streams are issues that have not been addressed or remedied by the entity Hawai’I Reserves Inc. (HRI) that you and Property Reserves, Inc. oversee.
If we as community members are expected to own up to our responsibilities as stewards of our environment and community, it would only be fair to expect the same from you.
The support backing Ke Kula o Lāʻie in this petition to halt further contribution to adverse environmental impact in our community will confirm to you, Climbworks Lāʻie LLC (Aaron Campbell), Hawaii Reserves Inc. (Eric Beaver) and the Lāʻie Community Association (Pane Meatoga/Kevin Schlag) that there are in fact, more of us who are “highly” against the project. Please put a stop to this rushed zipline project, it will only harm our community.
