Hearty wishes on ‘Kumar Purnima’ and ‘Gajalaxmi Puja’……
Kumar Purnima is observed on the full moon day in Ashwin month in Odisha.
The festival is dedicated to Kumar or Kartik, the first son of Lord Shiva. Kumar, popularly known as Kartik, is the most attractive among the Gods in Hindu pantheon and Kumar Purnima is believed to be the birthday of Lord Kartik.
Unmarried girls worship him on the day wishing a consort like him. During day time, they offer prayers and offerings to the Sun and keep fast. In evening, after sighting the full moon, girls break their fast and consume food.
The festival of Goddess Lakshmi ‘Gajalaxmi Puja’ also gets underway from the day for eleven days. The district of Dhenkanal is most famous for its grand celebration of Gajalaxmi puja.

Mahashtami or Durgashtami is the eighth day of the Navratri and Durga Puja celebrations and is very significant as per the Hindu beliefs and the legend associated with Devi Durga
A fast is observed on the day by devout Hindus. Weapons of Goddess Durga are also worshipped on the day.
On Mahashtami day, it is believed Goddess Bhadrakali, the powerful and fierce form of Mother Goddess, was incarnated.
Goddess Bhadrakali appeared with 64 Yogini Shaktis and some other fierce Goddesses to strike fear in Mahishasura. On Mahanavami, she became Mahishasura Marshini by slaying the demon.
The 64 Yoginis and Ashtanayikas, the eight consorts of Durga, are therefore worshipped on this day. Goddess Shakti temples perform special pujas and rituals on the day.

The much awaited ‘monsoon rain’ has cuddled the entire country. What are your memories & impressions of rain ?
The seasonal south-west monsoon that brings over two-third of India's rainfall and powers the Indian economy through agriculture, has been the prime mover behind the country’s annual economic performance.
Failure of monsoon results in a sharp drop in India's food output that sent food prices soaring and inflation to a record high.
A favourable monsoon this year could help increase farm produce which in turn is expected to bring down inflation.
The Indian Meteorological Department had forecast a normal monsoon this year, expected to be 98 percent of the 50-year long-term average rain.
Jasodhara brings you glimpses from across the country in our series “First Touch of Monsoon”.

The three presiding deities of Puri Jagannath Temple will take off for the Gundicha temple in the grand ceremony ‘Ratha Jatra’ on July 3, Sunday.
One of the most outstanding feature of Puri Ratha Jatra is painstaking making of the three chariots in which the deities are drawn to the Gundicha temple. The mammoth wooden chariots are crafted from scratch every year, involving huge mobilization, coordination and participation of hundreds of skilled architects.
Only the 'Sarathi' (charioteer), Ghoda (horses), Kalasa (Crowning element) and Parswa devatas are not made new every year. They are prepared on the year of Navakalebara (New-body ceremony).
The Ratha Yatra takes place in the Second day of bright fortnight in the month of Asadha. But the actual preparation starts from the Magha Saptami with the cutting of trees in distant Daspalla/Nayagarh and nearby areas for providing the wood necessary for construction of chariots.
On the third day of the bright fortnight of Baisakh, i.e. Akshaya Trutiya, starts the auspicious construction of chariots on the Grand Road of Puri and completed within a short span of 58 days.
In our Series ‘The Ratha Jatra Countdown’, Jasodhara brings you today a presentation on ‘The Making of the Chariots’. Reporting by Santosh Ku. Sahu [Jasodhara Global Media/Odisha Bureau] Photographs by Nityananda Gauranga.
