EFFECTS OF MONOCHROMATIC ILLUMINATION ON GROWTH AND PIGMENT PRODUCTION OF EUTETRAMORUS PLANCTONICUS (KORCH.) BOURR. | BIONATURE

The effect of monochromatic lights - red and blue have been studied on the cultures of Eutetramorus planctonicus (Korch.) Bourr. against white and dark with reference to the growth, morphological variation and pigment formation. Maximum growth was observed under white light. Red light favoured the growth while blue re****ed it. Red light influenced cell division while blue light affected cell dimensions. Both the processes were well balanced under white light and were totally suppressed under total darkness. Blue light had an edge over red in the production of Chl. b pigment.

EFFECTS OF FOLIAR SPRAY OF SOME CHEMICAL GROWTH MODIFIERS ON THE MORPHOLOGY AND FRUIT YIELD OF FLAVOR PEPPER | BIONATURE

Alar-85 produced sturdier plants, higher yields and heavier fruits, especially at single but higher concentrations of application, and can be advantageously used with double application at increased plant populations. Ethrel at double application excessively reduced plant height and induced proliferation of basal branches beyond advantageous levels. At single application, cycocel increased plant height by increasing internode length, and also appeared to enhance fruit yields.

CYTOLOGICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF SOME VARIETIES AND F1 HYBRIDS OF RICE, ORYZA SATIVA, USING THE METHOD OF ANTHER CULTURE | BIONATURE

Anthers of six Russian and Bulgarian varieties of rice, Oryza saliva, and their three F1 hybrids were investigated for callus formation and plant regeneration in two nutritional media. N6 medium is four times more effective in callus induction when compared to Murashige and Skoog's medium but the latter is better than the former for plant regeneration. Cytological investigation showed that 28% of regenerates were haploid, 67% diploids and 4% had chromosome number above 2n = 24. The average size of stomatic cleft is a constant character and should be used in determining the ploidy status. The study of pigment content and photosynthetic activity in 9 dihaploid lines obtained by anther culture of F1 hybrid of Belozem X Plovdiv-22 shows that the presence of transgressive forms may be used directly in rice breeding.

COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF SHOOT FORMATION FROM ENDOSPERM, EMBRYO AND IN VITRO-FORMED LEAF CULTURES OF DENDROPHTHOE FALCATE (L.F.) ETTINGS | BIONATURE

Experiments were performed to study the action of phytohormones on shoot formotion from endosperm, embryo and endosperm, embryo and in vitro-formed leaf cultures of Dendrophthoe falcata L.f.) Ettings. The explants (endosperm, embryo and in vitro-formed leaves) were implanted on white's modified medium (WM) supplemented with various auxins (IAA, IBA, NAA, 2,4-D), cytokinins (6-furfurylaminopurine, 6-benzylaminopurine, adenine) and casein hydrolysate (CH) at various concentrations. Cytokinins induced bud formations from the explants that develop into shoot in presence of cytokinins. Without cytokinins, there was no bud differentiation. Shoots formation were similar in morphology but the triploid shoot was slightly bigger. The cytology of the cells, however remained unchanged.

OPHIOGLOSSALES. I: AN OVERVIEW | BIONATURE

Ophioglossales are the natural group of early vascular plants which exhibit the most simple and most complicated combinations of characters comparable to bryophytes, pteridophytes, progymnosperms, gymnosperms and angiosperms. Essentially, pteridophytes these plants are often referred and classified as ferns. However, there are some fundamental differences which should not justify their present alliance. The chief “genetic loss’ in plants of this group can be presumed to be the loss of capability of producing sclerenchyma. Also, the sporangia are unlike ferns; they do not have an annulus and are supplied with vascular tissue. Additionally, absence of circinate vernation and presence of periderm (in about 22% of Ophioglossum population) make them “unlike ferns”.

The conventionally recognised three genera, Botrychium, Helminthostachys and Ophioglossum constitute a single family Ophioglossaceae of the order Ophioglossales. Nevertheless, intergeneric differences are so pronounced that recognition of three separate families viz. Botrychiaceae, Helminthostachyaceae and Ophioglossaceae by some taxonomists are quite justified. Botrychium and Ophioglossum are further divided to have subgenera; Botrychium has Sceptridium, Eubotrychium and Osmundopteris, while Ophioglossum has two, viz. Ophioglossum and Ophioderma.

Population cytogenetic studies have been carried out for 15 years chiefly from the localities where more than one species of Ophioglossum grow. Repeated meiotic studies have also been carried out from populations of single or isolated species of Ophioglossum and monotypic Helminthostachys. Numerous teratologies of genetic importance have been described. Role of natural selection is being assessed. Lately, a new species O. eliminatum is being suspected to have been arisen by natural hybridization and chromosomal elimination. O. eliminatum has the lowest count n = 90 in the genus.

PHYTOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATIONS ON DROUGHT RESISTANCE IN SELAGINELLA | BIONATURE

Quantitative estimation of total soluble sugars, starch, proteins, amino acids, phenols and phosphorus contents in entire plants of both the Rajasthan species of Selaginella (S. rajasthanensis Gena et al. and S. repanda (Desv.) spring) have been carried out. Total soluble sugars, proteins, phenols and free amino acids were quite abundant in S. repanda in comparison to S. rajasthanensis. Ecologically, S. repanda is a species which withstands drier and harsher atmospheric conditions and the abundance of soluble sugars suggests some metabolic basis of its potential to continue growth during period of enhanced dryness as compared to S. rajasthanensis. A higher level of phenols provides additional mechanism to S. repanda to withstand extremes of environmental conditions of Rajasthan specially drought resistance.

VEGETATIONAL HISTORY OF CHAMBAL RAVINES | BIONATURE

The paper deals with the study of the pollen found in the soil at various depths in Chambal ravines. The observations reveal that from the depth of 20 cm to 240 cm there are three stratum of various pollen. The first stratum extends down to 100 cm and is dominated by the pollen of shrubby taxon. The second stratum is enriched with the pollen of grasses and shrubs. The lowest stratum is lodged between 160 cm to 240 cm depth and consists the pollen of trees and shrubs. The discussion exhibits that there has been a major change in the vegetation from a flourishing tree forest to the present shrubs through grasslands as evidenced by the presence of grass pollen in the middle strata. The civilisation had also played a role for this change.

STUDIES ON N2 FIXATION BY FREE-LIVING AND RICE PLANT-ASSOCIATED BACTERIA IN WETLAND RICE FIELD | BIONATURE

Nitrogen often becomes limiting factor for rice production. A large number of rice farmers in developing countries either do not use or use low levels of nitrogen fertilizers mainly because of its high price. In such a situation, the question arises : how is soil fertility in wetland paddy soils maintained over the years even though a substantial amount of nitrogen is removed by the rice crop, or is lost by leaching, denitrification, and ammonia volatilization ? Long term fertility trials with rice in Japan and the Philippines suggest that as much as 50 to 75 kg N per ha is added every year. Most of this nitrogen is thought to come from fixation by free living and rice plant-associated microorganisms. Some nitrogen also comes from rainfall, irrigation, floodwater, silt and atmospheric ammonia.

Experiments conducted at IRRI, employing the acetylene-reduction technique, labeled nitrogen, and Kjeldahl technique for nitrogen balance suggested that a significant amount of dinitrogen is fixed in rice fields by these N2 fixing microorganisms and that a part of this fixed nitrogen is immediately utilized by the rice plant. It is difficult to generalize that any one group of these microorganisms is not active in N2 fixation in all or most flooded rice soils. At the moment, Azolla is used in very few countries in Asia because limiting factors are associated with its application: phosphorus requirement, pest problem, labor need, and difficulty of growth at high temperature. On the other hand, the indigenous blue-green algal flora that is more common in rice fields is more susceptible to biotic, climatic and edaphic factors. Whether blue-green algal or Azolla or both are present or absent, free living and rice plant-associated N2fixing bacteria are generally active in wetland rice fields.

The continuous maintenance of nitrogen fertility is, therefore, a result of the combined effort of all the nitrogen fixing organisms. This paper further suggests that a critical, long term study should examine the feasibility of applying rice crops residues as substrate for bacterial nitrogen fixation.

ALTERATION IN THE CAUDAL NEUROSECRETORY SYSTEM DUE TO EXPOSURE TO ENDOSULFAN AND MALATHION IN THE FRESH WATER FISH HETEROPNEUSTES FOSSILIS | BIONATURE

Effect of two pesticides endosulfan and malathion on the caudal neurosecretory system of freshwater catfish Heteropneustes fossilis, exposed for 7 and 15 days durations, are observed and discussed in reference to ionohydrosomotic role of urophysial system. Both pesticides could initially induce the neurosecretory activity of Dehlgren cells, however, in Malathion exposed fish even chromophobia could settle following 15 days exposure. It seems that such rise in neurosecretory activity contributes either to the tendency of rapid excretion of pesticides or towards counterbalance of blood pressure risen as a pesticidal exposure effect.

INVESTIGATION ON FERN GENUS ATHYRIUM ROTH. I. VARIATIONS IN DROUGHT RESISTANCE OF THREE SPECIES OCCURRING AT MT ABU, RAJASTHAN, INDIA | BIONATURE

Ecophysiology of Athyrium falcatum, A. pectinatum and A. schimperi occurring at Mt Abu, Rajasthan with special reference to drought resistance is described in this paper, Temperature treatment given to rhizomes, fronds and spores and percentage sprouting of rhizomes, percentage degradation of chlorophyll with total carotenoids and percentage viability of spores respectively is provided. A. pectinatum was found to be comparatively more drought resistant, surviving for a longer period in every growing season in comparison to both A. falcatum and A. schimperi. A. falcatum however, shows a higher spore viability percentage after temperature treatment. This explains its confinement to a rocky habitat whereas both A. pectinatum and A. schimperi grow by and large in a soil textured habitat at Mt. Abu.
