Maternity protection, in a broad sense, is indispensable to enable breastfeeding:

🌱 healthy nourishment and rest for women and pregnant persons.

🌱 respect for the times of labor and birth.

🌱 safeguarding and promotion of the golden hour and continuous uninterrupted attachment between baby and mother or mothering person.

🌱 training professionals on important physiological events to ensure short, medium and long term health: do not separate them and do not administer any substitutes.

🧐 Babies away from their mothers cry because they need to be in their mother's arms. They do not cry because they are hungry!

PAHO/WHO recommends that countries implement and enforce the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes at all levels. It is vital to ensure that breastfeeding mothers are not targeted by industry, marketing or public health professionals who want to endanger breastfeeding by promoting formula feeding.

We hope this is the case!

It is time to understand, accept and assimilate that what we understand as "scientific knowledge" is only a small part of knowledge; the beginning of life brings with it a perceptual field that exceeds what the current Western culture chooses to name and describe. Learning, even today, continues to happen in multiple ways. And the immense possibilities of our senses are limited in childhood, when that which cannot be named becomes non-existent, thus closing the access to the wider existence of a world that integrates the subtle dimension.

Moving in freedom is what makes the very existence of the human being possible.
An encounter.
Breathing.
The skin.
The or**sm.
The life that flows.
And also the release of an egg from the o***y, the journey of millions of s***m, the implantation in the uterus, the onset of labor.
Birth.
Freedom and mystery of when.
There are no fixed and exact times, calibrated for the whole species.
In the same way, when bebx, already born, starts its process of conquering the control of its own corporeality, leaving behind the reflexes that allowed it to survive after birth, it will go with its own rhythm going through the necessary stages to acquire verticality and upright walking.
Respecting this time of each being will guarantee physical and emotional health.
It will allow him/her to organize his/her own way of bonding with the world, knowing that he/she is respected and loved.
On this will build its emotional resources and its capacity to respond or react to experiences.

Will we be able to start respecting childhood from the beginning of life?

Childbirth is an absolutely s*xual instance that bursts with an intimidating power.
Our s*xuality, which has been culturally constructed, outside of the physiological freedom to experience the fullness of the enjoyment of powerful substances such as oxytocin and endorphins, has been subjected to unpleasant practices, forced and often "acted" for others. It is time to know, connect, set limits and re-found forms of expression and connection that follow the subtle rhythm of a joy that is built on the respect for the choices and needs of each being. Childbirth is part of that intimate journey, which is revealed in all its voluptuousness if we dare to leave behind what is expected: to behave well, to be silent, to be stoic.
Experiencing the fullness of labor and birth includes accepting sounds, sensations and needs outside of what we are used to.
The s*xuality of childbirth is moaning, whispering, screaming, crying, pain, laughter and or**sm.

Loving and enjoying giving birth and being born will undoubtedly put another imprint on the planet.

The family garden, the cultivation of food and medicinal plants are an indispensable part of the vindication of the sovereignty of each person, of each community and its culture.
The Latin American and Caribbean midwives and healers vindicate and teach the importance of knowing and cultivating one's own medicine and food as a central part of freedom and autonomy in health care.
Taking that simple and small step of starting with a seed, with a species, learning, observing and relating to nourish and help in a healing process, connects us deeply with an ancestral memory that is activated and becomes knowledge and action. We have the possibility, and the right, to be autonomous in our health care.

Food sovereignty implies having access to healthy foods that guarantee the indispensable nutrients to nourish and sustain health.

For each new being, this sovereignty should begin to develop in intrauterine life within a healthily nourished body. Each government must guarantee access to quality food, without agrotoxics or devitalization processes that turn the original food into consumer products without nutritional power.
And a turning point, after the gestation process, birth is where the beginning of breastfeeding must be protected as a priority. When the discourse is focused on protecting and preserving health, actions must be accompanied by substantiated procedures. There is no justification for interrupting the attachment and initiation of physiological breastfeeding of the human offspring. To be born, to go to the breast, skin to skin, to be gently dried and wrapped, to cut the umbilical cord after delivery of the placenta. Do not interfere with the bond. Respect the meeting.

To protect childbirth, it is imperative that each government implements action programs that guarantee rights.

Women and pregnant persons and their families may or may not be aware of the real needs of a woman and her baby during labor, delivery and birth.
The government - municipal, provincial and national - must guarantee the dissemination of information to health teams and the community, training in both rights and current protocols (not customs and traditions), and the firm decision to take measures against those who do not comply with the regulations.

The diagnoses are there, the next step is concrete actions that guarantee procedures that protect health, that respect cultural patterns, diversity, gender perspective and the intersectional dimension with equity.
