TAIPEI - According to Lou Woei-jye, the spokesman for Taiwan's Eighth Army Corps, Taipei's drills began shortly after 00:40 GMT with the launching of target flares and artillery, and they stopped just under an hour later at 01:30 GMT.
Lou said on Monday that military exercises were planned exercises and weren't a direct reaction to Chinese posturing around the island. He made this statement to the AFP news agency.
The drills, according to Taiwan's army, will happen once more on Thursday and would involve the deployment of hundreds of soldiers and around 40 howitzers.
China expands its business
In response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, China initially planned its drills to last from Thursday through Sunday. However, the Chinese military's Eastern Theater Command later announced continued military exercises.
