CHAPTER 1 | DREAMS ARE FOR REAL
There are certain kinds of dreams that beat our imagination. For instance, we may have a dream in a dream; gain insights while dreaming or appear to be more informed, more articulated and especially wise in our dreams. At other times, dreams could be quite revelatory such that we awake knowing what to expect as the day unfolds. In some cases, we are gifted to be able to tell the motive of someone else towards us, especially where such motives or intents are suspect.
There are other forms of dreams in which angels are seen, and there are yet others where symbols and representations reflect so that the key to unlocking such dreams are hid in the symbols. In some strange sequence, a person may have a dream by installment that spans some number of days such that that dream can only be clearly understood when the dream series pans out. In some cases, a person may have more than two or three dreams in one night (that may or may not materially connect in terms of the central theme) or on succeeding nights. Such dreams may be separate and distinct in material respects but bear a connected meaning that fits out perfectly. At other times, a person's dream could only be properly understood when it is interpreted alongside the dreams told him by another dreamer (i.e., where more than one dreams by different dreamers jointly pass the same message). What all these mean is that dreams could be an embodiment of premonition, revelation or confirmation. And quite curiously, it could be telepathic as well.
As mooted above, dreams could be pretty curious sometimes. For instance, Frank once told me that he was going through crises at some point in his life. At that point, he decided to do something radical about it. He declared a 7-day prayer and fast. He told me that on the first day of the fast, he had a dream, where he saw himself in a pit, in a vast wasteland. He tried to get out of it but couldn't. On the second day, he dreamt that someone he couldn't recognize lowered a ladder into the pit and made it rest at an incline, against the mouth of the pit. On the third day, he began climbing the ladder in his bid to get out of the pit. On the fourth day, he had progressed to the top. On the fifth day, he had climbed out of the pit. Once outside the pit, he stood awhile to study the environment. On the sixth day, he began to walk away from the pit.
It'll interest you to know that everyone can dream. However, as clear and demonstrative as most dreams could be, they could be misunderstood, misinterpreted or ignored. It follows that when we do appreciate the fact that dreams are mediums or means by which God communicates with us, or that dreams sometimes mirror our subconscious or our earthly dealings, then we would perhaps take most of our dreams seriously and act based on what they hint.
When we belittle dreams, we may be tempted to disregard them altogether. We may be tempted to treat them as soulish entertainment, a play on the mind, a comedy of errors, enigmas, or mysteries. Nonetheless, the fact is that we live in a real world, and going by the fact that life’s circumstances have proved time and time again that there's a connect between the supernatural and the natural and that the natural is significantly affected by the spiritual. This means that dreams point to some future reality; reveal some facts in the past or present and also point the way, for the present.
As you would have observed, not all dreams should give us sleepless nights for the simple reason that some dreams are mere offshoots of vain fantasies and imaginations or a reflection of our realities. In other words, a thought that has become ingrained on the subconscious could play out in a dream form. Accordingly, a person who is thirsty or hungry would probably find himself drinking or eating in his dream. A person who feels guilty or fears possible repercussions of his ill-doing might dream that he was arrested, prosecuted and sent to jail. A man who fears death might dream that he died or witnessed his own funeral and burial! A person who fears being hurt by the powers of the occult might find himself entangled in a spider’s web or pursued by fierce masquerades. These types of dreams informs of one's mental state and how these have gradually come to shape the spiritual atmosphere of the dreamer. Nonetheless, there are few instances where some of these kinds of dreams are clear indication of spiritual attacks—resulting from diabolical activities targeted at the dreamer.
In essence, the trends of most dreams can give the dreamer a clue as to his or her spiritual state. The good news is that it can be radically changed and/or sanitized—if the dreamer keeps his/her thoughts pure. And of course, this can be achieved if there is the commitment to fill one’s heart with God’s Word. This implies that once we sense that our dreams hint of spiritual attacks, we can engage in spiritual warfare and take charge in the spiritual realm.
