HERE’S THE WISHING WELL, WISHING WELL…
Most of us spend a lifetime in the pursuit of wellness – at home, at the workplace, during vacations and even at strenuous family weddings. In the process, we are not only short of breath, but of answers too. But what if there were a wishing well that could enlighten us on the secrets of our wellbeing?
This is a new series where a Wishing Well plays Agony Aunt, with a twist. There are a couple of things you need to be ready with before you listen to some profound gyaan – a sense of humour and a pinch of salt.

Making wellness work…

Dear Wishing Well,

I've had it. I’m overworked, underpaid, short-changed, backstabbed and pushed around at the workplace. I've been slogging my backside off for years and the only thing I have to show for it is high BP. In fact, the kind of pressure that's bottled up inside me is so intense that if I had any ‘headweight’, I would have been called a pressure cooker. I must have been the only one who went into mourning when I figured out that December 21, 2012, wasn't the end of the world – that’s how bad things are. How do I change things at the workplace? How do I deal with this stress?

The one that tops my list of things that kills awareness will be alcohol and any other intoxication. Police records suggest that a large majority of crimes in India are committed in a state of inebriation. So, the real culprit is Mr Alcohol. Under the influence of Mr Alcohol, the sense of awareness is lost and with it the fear of punishment. From this point of view, even the clamour for stricter laws looks misplaced. What’s the point of scaring the blind with a gun?

Verdict: Hang Mr Alcohol till death!

Fearlessness may be the beginning point of valour. But it can also strike at the roots of a society. And that’s what ails the India of today. Her people have lost all the fears that kept a check on its consciousness.

Well, travel well!

With the changing times, travelling for wellness has also become so complicated an affair that it could become very stressful. To make sure that doesn’t happen to you, Ashvarttha brings a fulfilling package packed with a truly exhaustive itinerary.

"Say, ‘Travel by the land’." This unlikely advice from the Quran says it all. Traditions across civilizations have leveraged travel as a means of attaining wellness. Even in this age of Blackberries and Facebook, it continues to be the most trusted method of taking a break from all that one has to do for a living. From running off to solitude in a forest resort to getting lost in the artificial wonders of Disneyland, the wise men of today have found a thousand and one ways of making this old practice alive and productive. Yet, the essence remains the same!

The combination of the ABC Lowers blood pressure (therefore avoid/consume in moderation if you are anemic) Relaxes the mind (due to the substance betaine) and is used to treat depression. It also contains trytophan which contributes to a sense of well being. The juice is a rich source of boron, which plays an important role in the production of human s*x hormones.

100 grams of celery and 1 whole peeled apple and 1 whole peeled beetroot is the recipe for 1 glass of juice.

Dr (Dr. Eeks) Erin Stair,M.D., Holistic Wellness Consulltant & Writer, M.P.H. Candidate and founder of www.bloomingwellness.com. Chief editor for the Alternative Mental Health News has written a column for Ashvarttha which says Delusions are Good !!

Watch. Let’s practice fueling delusions in the realm of relationship health. Pretend you went on a date with a man or woman you adored. After the date, you sit and wait by the phone for him/her to call you. The phone never rings. You’re still waiting and have eaten a few gallons of ice cream and pizza pies. You stalk his/her page and learn this person is alive and going out with other men or women. You start to feel gloomy, depressed and like you’ll be alone forever and never meet anyone as amazing as the man or woman you adore. Okay, now stop! Instead of thinking negatively, now let’s practice fueling a GOOD delusion. He or she is not calling you back is a fact. But why he or she isn’t calling you back is up to YOU. He/She is not calling you because he/she realizes that you are a much more evolved and brilliant human than he or she could ever be. He/She was too awe-struck by your awesomeness and realizes he/she is unworthy to call you. He/She was struck by lightening and in a coma. His/her page was actually hacked and he/she is not going out with other people after all! The poor schmuck…, you might as well go out with other people while he/she is unconscious. You decide to go out while the love of your life is in a coma and lo and behold you meet a conscious man or woman who takes your breath away instantly. ...

People light incense sticks, offer them to the Goddess of Mercy and then place them in a huge golden bronze pot. The pot can hold tens of thousands of incense sticks, and these pots are kept at several places around the temple.

Usually, a good time to go to this temple is during prayer time, at 6 am or 8 am. It is then that the temple’s spiritual power gets awakened with the mass chanting. People of all age groups, from young adults to frail old women and men, were chanting intensely. I was amazed by what was happening there.

In the Disha jyothi kriya we are becoming aware of the front, back, right and left of the body corresponding to the north, south, east and west
We also work on the north east, north west, south east and south west directions. Then the top and bottom are also counted which adds up to ten directions.
Invoking each of the directions will bring in many gifts like wisdom, vitality, stability, prosperity and spiritual growth.
Once the 10 directions have been invoked and cleared, then our direction in life will become clearer and the right path will magically appear. This path will be a path of celebration, where even minor discomfort will free us from our karmic baggage and take us to higher ground. The healthy choices will become pleasant and we will choose the path of sat chit anandam. (ultimate reality, pure consciousness and bliss)
Disharmony or unhealthy influences from different directions will not affect our energy. Old toxins may come to the surface to be released and one feels lighter after the release. Practicing the Disha jyothi kriya will help protect and energise every direction of our life.

To hide your excitement on receiving a text from the tawny-skinned boy in class, to sing knowing that you sound like a crow, to rehearse lines before asking that one girl out, to do that little jive when she invites you over, to cry when your kid brother is leaving for his boarding school – I’m sure all of us would rush to the bathroom at the first chance we get!!

The most widely acknowledged form of bathroom celebration is that of singing in the shower. It makes you feel no less than a Madonna or Michael Jackson since this box-like stall of a bathroom amplifies the frequencies of the sound we create and also creates reverb, thereby making us sound like swans. Moreover, studies say that ‘bathroom singing’ in the wee hours of the morning help in getting through the day relaxed and happy. A shower also becomes a meditative exercise for many to ruminate on the happenings of the day. While singing in the shower, one feels he/she is cleaning the body with soap and the soul with a song, thereby uplifting one’s own mood.

Write down financial needs and break them into long term and short term goals. Work first towards saving for near term goals like medical insurance and also life insurance as these get more expensive with age. If possible keep a small sum aside consciously every month or even alternate month to begin with for long term goals like children’s higher studies, repayment of a home loan or a retirement plan. This can be a slower build up. If you are expecting a bonus during the year, plan what you would do with it...

With head straight and still , and arm extended , to trace the infinity symbol (8) and the figure 8 in the air several times with my index finger, following it with my eyes ; then repeat daily for 1 minute.

Tennis , table tennis and badminton are sports that oblige the eyes to follow a ball moving at speeds that can reach 170 kilometres per hour. Focusing the eyes on this specific moving point develops visual acuity, increases the strength and flexibility of the six oculomotor muscles, and improves the coordination between hands and eyes. Studies show that playing racquet games leads to better than average ocular mobility, greater sensitivity to contrast and an improved capacity to see images clearly when distances vary quickly. These sports stimulate the brain and are extremely beneficial. This is because the brain is constructed like a huge network : when one region is activated regularly , the effects are felt in other parts of the brain , so that the whole brain benefits.

The mind has a tendency to drive itself to do an activity. It takes comfort in this journey towards an external entity. This activity that you are indulged in is an external entity. The same activity has a fragmented existence. The more you indulge in this external and fragmented entity, the more you may see yourself segmented in a framework.
Your learning enables you to have domain expertise within this framework. This domain expertise is your product or your service. Someone you know may require your expertise or your service. You will then make a mutually beneficial relationship, so that you get something in return. A mutual exchange of service and expertise begins with the other. This exchange with the other kickstarts a relationship of trade. To measure and to quantify this trade you have created many units. One of the units is money. The land bank is a resource and so are the scarce minerals and elements and just like them your interactive skills and talents are resources. But do you have a unit to measure and quantify your interactive talents and skills? So let us invent the science of ‘psychometrics’

EXCITING S*X GAMES TO SET YOUR BEDS ON STEAM TODAY !!

According to a Duke University study, if you have more than 200 or***ms a year (that's 2 to 3 times a week), you can reduce your physiological age by six years. The average human loses 26 calories on kissing for a minute. Furthermore, vigorous s*x for half an hour burns 150 calories (you can lose three pounds in a year – if you have s*x 7 to 8 times a month). Thanks to all the research by the geeky scholars, amazing facts of S*X are revealed every day. But the fun is not in the facts, is it? It is in the act. Let us take a ride down to the bottom and discover more about this art of life in this celebrative mood. ...

2. S*X ON CARDS: (A Dude’s delight)
Start with a deck of cards, and assign each with a different s*xy meaning: for e.g.: hearts represent kissing, diamonds for a massage, clubs for cuddling, and spades may mean anything you want to. Take turns picking cards from the stack and treating each other to the s*xy move you draw. The numbers on the cards represent how long you have to do each action— for e.g.: if you get the nine of diamonds, give a sensual rubdown for nine seconds. Game on!

Modern-day festivals such as Propose Day and Teddy Day have found a fun and comfortable space in our calendars and we have opened our hearts and wallets to them with full passion. So while at one point it suggests that we are gradually drifting from the traditional festivals that once defined us, it also means that the world as a community in itself is coming together to celebrate each day. Well, no one is against celebrations, virtual or real, especially because life now runs on a fast track mode; what we are concerned about is the balance between the traditional and modern. Can we strike a balance between wine and nimbu paani and Valentine’s and Karva Chauth? The answer lies in the simple fact that as long as family, friends and food continue to be a priority on each day, modern days will not be able to erode into traditional festivals. So, here’s looking forward to the traditional shaking hands with the modern....

There is no denying that any break from the daily routine can be refreshing, relaxing and can help reduce stress. But in today’s rat race, it is hard to take that break. Even when we do take off from work, there is BBM and FB to keep us engaged!

And that was exactly how I felt around Diwali time. The feeling of being tailed by work all the time was irritating. Yet, there was no way out. Even on days when I made it a point to come home early, with the idea of relaxing, there was no escape. When I sat down to meditate, believing that’s the best form of relaxation, my mind wouldn’t stop thinking about what happened at work or what I must make happen tomorrow! No kidding! It’s like getting into a cul-de-sac!

I am sure this issue of Ashvarttha will come home with enough wisdom to make your life an eternal celebration. And that’s the most precious gift we can offer! So celebrate it!

Mulla Nasruddin and his wife were sitting on a park bench hidden behind a row of palms. Suddenly a young couple came on the other side of the palms. The young man immediately started to talk in a very romantic way, in a very poetic way.

Mulla Nasruddin's wife became fidgety, uneasy. She said, whispered in Nasruddin's ear, "It seems that young man is not aware that we are here, so you whistle to make them aware. And the young man seems so much in love that I feel that he is just about to propose."
Nasruddin said, "Why should I whistle? Nobody ever made me alert, nobody whistled when I was proposing."

Prof. Dr. George M. Chandy, MD, DM (Gastro), PGDHA, FRCP, FIHS. Currently, he is Director, MIOT Advanced Center for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases.
He has 27 years of experience in gastroenterology, and has specialized in liver transplantation. Dr. Chandy set up one of India’s first liver units at the CMC in 1991, and started liver transplantations there in 1997 and retired as Director, CMC Vellore, a post he held from 2002 to 2007.

He says “Medical science is very important. But beyond that, most people get a lot of relief if someone just listens to them. That’s what my mother taught me. She was the guiding force both in my spiritual life and in my choice of a career in healing. She taught me to reach out to people in a spirit of caring. She also made me understand that ours is a temporary role, we can only do ‘in part’; it is for God to give perfection. My tip would be: Learn to see yourself as a part of God’s plan, just one of the components in the whole vast Universe that He has made. In addition, try to see your neighbour as being equally important as yourself. If you do this, the ‘I-Orientation’ responsible for most of the stress of modern life, and which in turn causes a lot of diseases, will be eliminated.”

Irritation and anger are feelings that relentlessly build up inside us. We can contain them for a certain time at the cost of a great effort of will power, but ultimately this censoring does little to calm us down and can even lead to resentment and stress. Curiously , an angry outburst doesn't bring relief either : at the time , expressing anger gives us the impression that we feel better, but in the long run it makes us feel bitter and ill at ease.

Psychologists recommend a strategy that everyone can use to deal with overwhelming surges of emotion: its called automatic control. It is based on how we interpret the world around us- the view we take of a situation, rather than the situation itself . It uses an essential law of emotion : the fact that emotion is not produced by a situation but by the interpretation that we give it.

So, in each emotional situation , we should question or reflect on the real origin of our reaction, whether it is due to jealousy , stress, a feeling of guilt or memories of the past. Undertaking this introspective analysis is useful for two reasons : its often all we need to calm down, and it helps us to know ourselves better, which is an essential skill for emotional intelligence.

WELLNESS LESSONS FROM SUNNY LEONE

“I am not ashamed of who I am and never will be.” Coming from a successful adult movie star, one may think this is being utterly out of sync with the world. But to those who know the mettle Sunny Leone is made up of, it’s the statement of someone who is at peace with herself! It takes a lot of guts to not be ashamed of being a p**n star in a society where everyone wants to see her movies but still calls her a bad girl. Sunny has it in oodles. And she has used it to make a virtue out of her profession and attain nirvana.
This is something even the nirvana-seeking honchos of today will be inspired from. Not allowing the negative things to come to mind. “The only thing I can think of would be that I miss my family and my dogs when I am working outside of Los Angeles,” was what she said about the part of her profession that adversely affects her wellness. Note Sunny isn’t a career-only woman. She still values things that are truly personal. “I think marriage and family life is amazing,” she advocates....

If you’ve ever sat down with a paper and pen and poured your heart out onto it, then you’d probably agree with us when we say that words may not speak the loudest, but they do flow straight from the heart. Now what would it be like to have a chance to pour out your heart on paper all through the day and night? Ever wondered how a writer gets inside your head and expresses your grief in a way that you thought only you understood? Or how a writer distances his own happiness from his characters and keeps it from influencing them? Does a writer ever feel trapped between words? Is it easy for a writer to fall asleep when a chapter is incomplete or when his thoughts are scattered?
