Writer's Unblock is a collection of songs, poetry, and occasional interviews geared towards writers, poets, musicians, and generally creative people (or people who want to become creative!) to listen in and get their creative juices flowing, take a writing break, or just relax listening to an eclectic playlist. From time to time, the show features writers, poets, and musicians who perform their work on the air. airs Sundays 6PM-8PM at wbar.org. Tune in, chill out, and write on.

Well Unblockheads, unfortunately the time has come to write a post neither of your beloved DJs wanted to write. Unless you've been living under a rock (which wouldn't be so bad right now - ) you probably know that universities across the US are sending students home in light of the rapid spread of COVID-19. That mandate includes Barnard College and Columbia University, which means that your dear old DJ Little Broadcast and DJ Sweet Daddy are being sent home.

That also means we're not going to be in the studio to wrap up Harrison's final season the way we wanted to - that is to say, on WBAR.org. But in today's day and age of technological advancement, that doesn't mean Writer's Unblock has to end here.

While we work out alternate options for our show's format, we'll likely be going the podcast route in the coming weeks. And while of course it won't be identical to our preferred radio format, it'll give us a chance to keep doing what we love until the end of the semester - sharing with you the creative processes of very talented people to inspire you to make something of your own (and hey, maybe social distancing will give you the chance to start making something you've always wanted to get around to, but didn't know how to start!).

So in conclusion, we'll keep you posted, and most importantly (for this context), Writer's Unblock LIVES ON! Stay tuned and STAY SAFE. We can all make a relatively meager collective sacrifice to protect our older, immunocompromised, and otherwise at-risk family members, friends, and neighbors. We'll be doing our part, and we hope you'll join us. We'll see you on the flip side, wherever that may be.

But before we start the new season, we want to say a special thanks to Jeremy (DJ Spicy Beef Shank) who was an amazing co-host for four incredible seasons. Jarm brought so much fun, curiosity and humor to the show, and without a doubt, changed Unblock for the better. The show won't be the same without you, but we hope to do ya proud!

hey there unblockers! that's right, tonight we are BACK for season 6 TONIGHT from 12am-2am, but there's a new team of sheriffs around! while Harrison is off studying abroad for the semester in jolly old Oxford, your trusty Jeremy is here to hold down the fort, and he's got a new co-pilot: one Alex Grace, CC'21 who you may know from his side-splitting hilarious antics as co-head of Third Wheel Improv. We're so exciting to have Alex with us this semester, and we are so thrilled to introduce him to you all!

What’s the Deal With This Show?

Writer's Unblock. is a collection of songs, poetry, and occasional interviews geared towards writers, poets, musicians, and generally creative people (or people who want to become creative!) to listen in and get their creative juices flowing, take a writing break, or just relax listening to an eclectic playlist. From time to time, the show features writers, poets, and musicians who perform their work on the air. Writer's Unblock. airs Sundays 6PM - 8PM at wbar.org.

The show started in October 2016 when someone else wasn’t showing up to their timeslot and WBAR asked Harrison Gale BC’20 to step in. The difficult decision to take on a show took about 0.00023 seconds, but she eventually took the plunge and Writer’s Unblock. was born. The aim of the show is to make writing music, prose, poetry, or really just doing anything creative more accessible to those who may not know where to start by sharing experiences and advice from creative folks here on campus at Barnard College and Columbia University in addition to presenting “Artist Spotlights” of particular artists that the hosts admire while still maintaining a friendly, irreverent atmosphere (and boy, is it irreverent). The first episode of Writer’s Unblock. aired on WBAR on October 25, 2016.

The studio gets kinda lonely sometimes, and friends are great to have, so Jeremy Adkins SEAS ‘19 was invited to be a co-host on the show. Since season 3 began airing in October 2017, Harrison and Jeremy have developed a red oni-blue oni dynamic of sorts: “just a couple of onis,” as we say on the show.

In Spring 2019, Harrison spent a semester abroad studying English at the University of Oxford, so local improviser, goofball and pop culture enthusiast Alex Grace CC’21 was invited to hold down the fort with Jeremy until Harrison got back. In season 6, Jeremy and Alex gave their own twist to the show, presenting their Jarm-and-Alex infused Artist Spotlights and the new segment “Boys Corner” in which the DJs offer their scalding hot takes in the world of sports, Game of Thrones, and a whole buffet of other subjects.
