UWS Radio – Getting Started

Proposal: Create an UWS radio station that reflects the diversity of our community.

UWS Radio seeks to reflect our amazing neighborhood – in a cacophony of melding voices and music – arising out of this unique spit of “lebedik velt” (my grandfather’s favorite phrase – “a lively world”).

UWS Radio Goal: To encourage UWSers to produce audio programming that features our life in this part of the world. To broadcast those UWS sounds in a scheduled format on the Internet.

You have the technical hardware and know-how. All you need is an idea.

What are we doing to actualize UWS Radio?
• Setting up the technical infrastructure – a website and streaming station.
• Seeding the broadcast schedule with programming.
• Calling out to the community for more UWS programming.

What can you do?
• Create programming. If you have the desire, but no ideas – CONTACT US. If you have ideas, but feel it is too difficult – CONTACT US.
• Listen to UWS Radio. For now -- our broadcast schedule is limited to 4 – 10pm every day. See below for the daily schedule.
• Tell us you're listening at upperwestsideradio.com
• Tell others to listen.

NEW ON -- "UWS - LIVE" -- featuring UWS music events.. The West Side Community Garden is a verdant city oasis with season flowers and vegetable gardens. For the past several summers Randa Kirshbaum has organized a series of musical events in the Garden. But -- when Violinist Rolf Schulte performed this summer for the WSCG music series he did so at St. Paul’s and St. Andrew’s Church on W. 86th St -- to project the quality of the sound and protect his 1780 Storioni violin.
Unfortunately. there was echoing in the church sanctuary - but the next day Mr Schulte and pianist James Winn reproduced the concert in Cold Spring -- and it is this second concert that you will be hearing in this program. at UWS Radio starting Friday at 7pm.

Contact [email protected] if you yearn to be on air. We are looking for podcasters - DJs - people who like to talk and develop programming with a bit of the Upper West Side attitude - cool, posh, and a little nasty - torn jeans with a friendly, in-your-face manner. You know what I mean.

Conversations with an UWS attitude.

Had great conversations on our recent Podcast concerning guns -- enjoyment, local laws, safety, violence and activism. We spoke with Jon Corbette -- a Civil Rights advocate, Marie Delus -- a Marine Veteran and sharpshooter and Gun-safety/Gun-Violence Prevention Advocate, Shannon VanEsley, a leader of the NYC Chapter of the Brady Campaign and Johnnymae Robinson, a member of the Brady Campaign and a Million Mom marcher. In a separate BCR Extra Alan and I interviewed two students from a local Middle School on Manhattans upper westside. Arijana an 8th grader and Hudson in 6th grade spoke eloquently on why they organized and participated in the 17 minute walk out at their school. Give a listen! Alan and I agree that there are too many guns in America. If our laws were as restrictive as Japan's, last year there would have been 194 rather than 38,658 gun violence deaths.
