Representation is important. It was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s charisma and rhetoric that ignited a movement and gave voice to a struggle; the empowering words of his 1963 “I Have A Dream” speech reignited a nation hungry for social change.. The real power of Dr. King is that he is still a pioneers: his work continues to inspire others to expand the possibilities of conceived limitations in the name of diversity With Dr. King’s assassination in 1968, the civil rights movement was left with a void of this important and critical representation. Dance Theatre of Harlem would provide an outlet for expression for ballet artists of color who had no other place to share their voice until 2004, when the company went on hiatus as it reassessed it assets and, perhaps on a deeper level, its niche in the dance community and the audience it was representing. "Photography was something like this big monster that took over. It kind of moved in, and started to control my life and I became Mick Rock, rock photographer. What was I going to do? I went to see Bowie in Birmingham. I remember meeting his radio plugger, Anya. They were certainly trying to hustle. He had just gotten into this: haircut thing and started to wear the Ziggy outfit, so he was in Ziggy mode but he hadn’t released the album yet. Although he was playing some of the songs from it in March of ’72, the album was not released until June. The first gig I went to there were 400 people. He had a bit of a cult following, but I didn’t know anything about him until I got to know him. And then I saw this extraordinary character and was certainly entranced by the performance. The talent and of course when you talked to him, he was so fabulously articulate and informed. Bowie was not your average rock & roller by any standards." "The only thing that keeps the US in the game economically is our ability to come up with new ideas, to create new technologies and new products. The more science education we have, the more innovation we’ll have. Because we get our lifelong passion for science before we’re 10 years old, we can emphasize elementary science and produce a generation of innovators. There is nothing that I believe in more strongly than getting young people interested in science and engineering for a better tomorrow, a better humankind. Science is the key to our future, if you don’t promote science, you’re holding everybody back". Read more on " Champion of Truth" on flattmag.com (link in bio) #2016

"The impulse around the work is just me scouting around outside the studio. My resources are really right outside my door. That means frequenting the flea markets and antique malls. What I’ve been doing over the past four years is flying to a distant city, such as Washington DC, and then renting a cargo van. Then we scout the flea markets, yard sales, and shops all the way back to Chicago. This process has also introduced me to new bodies of work and ways of working that I’m just starting to show." Ghostface Killah is one of the only Rappers, or should I say American writers for whom the nature of his work has re- mained so steeped in romantic story telling despite Rap’s authentic origins of begrudging poetic ranting. is an ex- cellent curator of music has a keen ear for old soul, rapping consistently to carefully chosen tracks from a library of classics. His influence can be heard from to . He paints verbal stories that you can’t help but visualize through Issac Haye’s lenses whether the subject is doping and dealing, Stapleton S*x, or his love of family. As one of the founding members of the socially explosive WU TANG CLAN in 1992, Ghostface has always been considered to be the most prolific and evolutionary of the group: Interview and photography by Read more on flattmag.com (link in bio)

"I hope that people who have seen me perform or seen an interview with me were moved and will remember a positive feeling.' All you can do is be your best self. I've always felt that I had to be that much more aware of how I present myself. I'm representing more than just me. I wanted an opportunity for me to educate people and get them to become ballet fans and to educate them on what it means to be a dancer-a black ballet dancer" for more images on the "The New Philanthropy" log on to flattmag.com Photography by Christina Lessa and Nico Iliev

A photographer, sculptor and performance artist, Xaviera Simmons knows no boundaries. She hung out with squatters on New York’s Lower East Side when she was still in her teens; walked the transatlantic slave trade route through America and Africa before she could vote; and studied acting for two years, at an age when most young people would be partying, all to make her a better artist. Having solo shows and projects at The Studio In Harlem, The Aldrich Museum, The Museum Of Modern Art Xaviera Simmons sits down with FLATT to discuss how the various media and genres she explores get remixed into something new.
