Regarding season 5? Image has the larger story, but the tl;dr is: this particular saga is a deeper, darker well than I anticipated, I need a break, and season 5's act will be announced with the season news/release date(s) in 2025, I hope!

Dear Discography listeners,

I won't bury the lede: Discography must go on an indefinite hiatus. Please read on. I hope it won't be forever.

Hi, I'm Marc, the guy behind the microphone, research, selections, audio production, scripts, editing... basically everything but the parts that our executive producer handles for me. If you've not seen any of the rest of my social media feeds, the situation is as follows, somewhat vague, but as blunt as I can make it:

Last Friday, with less than five minutes of notice, a legal entity put my grandson (born through a tumultuous and life-threatening birth defect last year as I worked on the Black Sabbath season) under my emergency care. He's 16 months old, he's... erm, "seen some stuff" most likely (to put it nicely), he needs constant monitoring and care, and my wife and I are dropping absolutely everything we possibly can for the chance to raise him safely. He deserves this type of familial love, I am more than happy to give him everything that I possibly can, and it's the most important thing in the world to me that he receives it. Truthfully, it's the most important thing I may ever do as a human.

No matter how hard I were to try, there is no possible way to work on Discography in the manner you know it. I was on my fourth (and final) pivot to a different artist for season five - someone you'd already recognize as a listener - but seeing that a new box set just got announced that costs well into three digits, and it just isn't even financially realistic to gather all the needed research materials. (As a rule, I try very hard to not speak about releases that I can't hold and use functionally/physically on the show - I can't really know anything about the disc in question unless I muck about with it, and that's a standard I refuse to break.)

But even if that box magically appeared, the time to listen, absorb, research, write, and make it entertaining for you simply won't exist for me right now. My hands, ears, and eyes are tied. This is not the only thing under the Marc With a C moniker that will be going on indefinite hiatus, either.

Thanks to each one of you for listening. I'm intensely proud of the show, and I hope that before too long, the right time appears, and we can get back to studying those grooves together.

If you'd like to throw any support my way in an uncertain time, you can always do it at patreon.com/marcwithac, but this post isn't about money (just, usually someone asks, so I'm pre-empting the question), It's to give the story straight, as I've always tried to do.

From you? I get the story. So, for now? This is goodnight, not goodbye.

Fans of Discography,

I've tried to go at season five three times with three different artists. In the middle of nearing completion on the third chosen artist's season, it became clear that (and sorry to be vague about this) it's just not the right time for what was being built. That's the third pivot for the same season, all for very different reasons, and I'm simply flat-out burnt out from working on three seasons that'll likely never air/be completed now.

I made a 'Hail Mary' decision for this new and unexpected pivot, and there is good news and bad news! The good news is that it's now intended to be something I've been asked about/for since literally our first episode, and it should be VERY familiar to longtime Discography obsessives. The bad news is that it will take until early 2021 to complete at best. (And you'll completely understand why on the day of release!)

Right now, I'm taking a break this week and the next to regroup, recuperate, and to cleanse my listenin' palate a bit before starting another deep dive (and also to be sure that I have all needed research materials, because this one will be no joke).

I strive to make the show sound like there's an entire professional team working on it, but in truth, my producer does VERY important stuff, but the rest of the team is... just me. And most of what you've ever audibly heard on the show was my work, writing, editing, mixing, and research. The show can't be quality and be rushed, and sometimes I don't find out that it's not working out until a season is nearly complete. This is why there are such huge gaps between seasons, and why it is a bit inhuman for me to even attempt to go at this any faster than I already do.

Season five'll happen. It's gonna take awhile. I hope you'll like it when it's done. Please take care of yourselves and each other.

Love,
Marc

Season Five was *going* to be about The Go-Go's. That could not happen, but? You're getting their story directly - don't sleep on this, one of the most important groups in the history of pop music, period.

The Go-Go’s are rooted in music history as not just a pop phenomenon but groundbreakers as well. Born out of the L.A. punk scene, Charlotte Caffey (lead guit...

Discography fans?

You know that many things have been impacted by this whole... situation we're living through. Importantly, everyone is *fine*, but we too have hit a snag. We hoped to release a short two-episode stopgap season in late May, but it has proven to be currently unworkable.

Recalibrating, we're just swerving over to starting on a wholly different artist. This means the wait for season five will be longer, but it'll also be a bigger/longer season! This artist is one I've been asked for a number of times, but I won't be giving out hints beyond that.

There is no 'projected release date' yet for season five, as we spent the last week waiting to see if our initial plans would work, and today, we made the internal decision to switch to another artist. Hopefully not too long. I'd love to get two other seasons out this year if possible.

Our initial season five artist was the Go-Gos: a band that will absolutely gobsmack you when you look at what they really accomplished, and the feats that (still) have not been surpassed. We'd still like to tell that story, we merely won't be telling it *next*. One day.

(And seriously, if you are looking at me sideways about The Go-Go's, that's precisely why the season needed to be done. Go crank their third album, Talk Show, in full and get back to me.)

I'm now at the "waiting for a few more materials to arrive before we slowly start the research" phase. But that means it's coming, and you all know I do everything possible to make these worth the wait. Thanks for your understanding, patience, and support!

It's times like these that I really wish that Pete Townshend had finished "Lifehouse" since we are currently living in it.

Thankfully, a graphic novel is still reportedly on the way.

Stay safe, y'all.

Marc

Pete Townshend will publish a graphic novel of Lifehouse!

Dear fans of Discography:

Thanks for listening to our Black Sabbath season! I'd like to take a moment to remind you that for each season, we usually go to the polar opposite of what/who we cover in the previous season. The next season will uphold that tradition. Likely to be the shortest season we've done, actually!

We don't do this to be willfully difficult - there's a lot of great catalogs with lots of stories to tell. I won't pigeonhole the show within a "genre" or even a solid format. So? The next artist won't be predictable, you won't see this coming, but their story should be told!

There are more than a few tangent-type satellite releases in Black Sabbath's discography that weren't really eligible for discussion on our most recent season - live albums and the like. One such oddity is this studio EP known as "The End" (not to be confused with the live album of the same name.) Have you heard it? If so, what did you think?

Grooves. Stacks o’ wax!

Discography is a podcast chronicling a great artist’s catalog album by album.

Join cult indie-pop songwriter Marc With a C chronicling on multi-part expeditions into a single artist. Walk in a novice, and come out well-informed and with a new favorite record or two. And if you’re a longtime fan, we’ll go deep enough that you’ll be brimming with new factoids and perspectives. We've got no preferred genre either. After all, it's all just the same twelve notes in different patterns, right?

Though, we've gotta admit - they're fascinating patterns.
