Chanthaburi Characters

Nimith: Old man (50-­60) with a dark past. Nimith was a soldier during the Khmer Rouge before he escaped through the Chanthaburi mountain pass and settled as a gem miner in the beautiful town of Chantaboon. Nimith keeps to himself and enjoys his privacy. He’s a mysterious man. Over the years Nimith has devoted his life to being a good Buddhist.

Malee: Overworked and stressed middle aged woman (25-­40) who has just recently become a single parent due to the death of her husband. She’s a strong woman, but also unprepared for her most recent circumstances. She loves her son Udom beyond belief and is undoubtedly an amazing mother.

Udom: Very curious and well intentioned young boy (10-­14) who unknowingly is in need of a father figure. He’s very smart for his age and has a very charming demeanor. He’s also a little oblivious to how others feel, because of his naivete.

Yut and Ram: Two young classless thugs (20­-30) from Burma who prey on the weak and needy. They have no sympathy for people, for they’re a couple of sociopathic degenerates. They seemingly take pleasure in the suffering they cause.

Logline: An old gem miner with a regretful past may be done with the past, but the past isn’t through with him.

Synopsis: This is the story of an unlikely friendship between a jaded old man with a dark past and a young boy coping with the recent death of his father. Its a relationship both need for different reasons in different times of their lives. The old man teaches the boy traditional Thai buddhist rituals and takes the role of a guardian when his mother is far too busy and overwhelmed to take care of her child. When two thugs come in to town from Bangkok to collect a debt left by the boy’s father the old man must step in and protect his newfound family.
