Kelly Anne Bates, born on 18 May 1978, tragically lost her life on 16 April 1996, in Manchester, England, when she was just 17 years old. Her perpetrator, James Patterson Smith, born around 1948, subjected her to unspeakable torment over a span of four weeks. This included the horrifying act of gouging out her eyes, which occurred up to three weeks prior to her untimely demise. Ultimately, Kelly Anne met her end in a bathtub, where she was drowned. The investigation into this heinous crime was led by Detective Sergeant Joseph Monaghan of Greater Manchester Police, who expressed that in his 15 years of service, he had never encountered a case of such appalling nature. William Lawler, the pathologist responsible for examining Bates' remains, remarked that her injuries were the most severe he had ever seen on a murder victim. Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon, both Dutch students, went missing on April 1, 2014, while hiking the El Pianista trail in Panama. Several months later, partial remains of their bodies were discovered after an extensive search. The exact cause of their demise could not be conclusively determined. Initially, Dutch authorities, in collaboration with forensic and search-and-rescue experts, speculated that the students might have accidentally fallen from a cliff due to being disoriented. The circumstances surrounding their disappearance and its aftermath have led to much speculation about their final moments. Despite numerous theories proposed regarding Kremers and Froon's fate, an official cause of death remains undetermined. There was criticism directed towards Panamanian authorities for their alleged mishandling of the case and its aftermath. Further scrutiny of the incident in 2017 raised doubts about the initial investigation, as well as a potential connection to other homicides in the vicinity.

Dorothy Jane Scott was last seen in Anaheim, California, on May 28, 1980. She drove two coworkers to the hospital after one of them was bitten by a spider. Scott went to grab her car to bring it around to meet them as they were waiting for a prescription to be filled. Her automobile arrived, but it sped away; neither of them could see who was driving because the headlights had blinded them. After not hearing from her for a few hours, they reported her missing. Scott had been receiving anonymous phone calls from a man who had allegedly been pursuing her for months. He had threatened to isolate her and "cut her up into bits so no one will ever find her". In June 1980, a guy called the Orange County Register, a local newspaper that had run a story about Scott's disappearance and stated he had murdered her. The caller, according to police, was Scott's murderer. Between 1980 and 1984, Scott's mother, Vera, received phone calls from a man claiming to have Scott or to have murdered her. However, none of the calls could be tracked because the caller did not stay on the line long enough. Partially discovered remains were later recognized as Scott's in August 1984. In Scott's case, no arrests have been made.

Austrian woman Gertraud Arzberger, who placed two of her infants in a freezer and encased two others in concrete, has been handed a life imprisonment sentence. Arzberger, hailing from Graz, has been found guilty of three murder charges in June 2005, with experts suggesting that one of the babies might have been stillborn. Her partner, Johannes Genser, aged 39, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison as an accomplice. Arzberger, 33, cited financial difficulties and the fear of her partner leaving as reasons behind her actions. She, a bookkeeper by profession, informed investigators that she gave birth to the children in a bathtub but couldn't recollect what followed. Genser, while denying any knowledge of her pregnancies, admitted that he warned her that she would have to leave him if she became pregnant. Neighbors, however, testified in court that her pregnancies were visibly apparent. Two of the infants were discovered wrapped in plastic and concealed in a freezer within an apartment complex in Graz in the previous June. The discovery was made by a neighbor who had reportedly gone to the basement freezer to retrieve ice cream for his children. The third and fourth infants were found in plastic buckets filled with concrete inside a garden shed at the residence, situated about 200 km (120 miles) to the south of Vienna. These remains were located by police sniffer dogs. Neighbors attested that Arzberger had been pregnant a fifth time, though a fifth body hasn't been found. Arzberger admitted to four counts of murder during the court proceedings. Upon leaving the court in handcuffs, Genser attempted to propose marriage to Arzberger, asking the judge, "Can I still offer her my hand?" The judge firmly responded, "No."

The Hinterkaifeck murders occurred on the evening of 31 March 1922, when six inhabitants of a small Bavarian farmstead, located approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of Munich, Germany, were murdered by an unknown assailant. The six victims were Andreas Gruber (aged 63), his wife Cäzilia Gruber (aged 72), their widowed daughter Viktoria Gabriel (aged 35), Viktoria's children, Cäzilia (aged 7) and Josef (aged 2), and the maid, Maria Baumgartner (aged 44). They were all found struck dead with a mattock, also known as a "grub axe". The perpetrator(s) lived with the six corpses of their victims for three days. The murders are considered one of the most gruesome and puzzling unsolved crimes in German history. Four of the dead bodies were found stacked up in the barn, the victims having been lured there, one by one. Prior to the incident, the family and their former maid reported hearing strange noises coming from the attic, which led to that maid leaving. The case remains unsolved to this day.
The farm at Hinterkaifeck was built around 1863.
Less than a year after the murders, and the murder investigation, the farm was completely demolished. Additional evidence was revealed, including a mattock hidden in the attic and a pen-knife found in the hay in the barn.
