Some exciting aurora news

The Aurora Borealis season will likely continue to be visible throughout summer, only in regions below 53 degrees north, using the map below as a guide if you live or travel south of the light blue areas these regions willl be dark enough late at night to see the aurora when it’s Strong. (Approx 1130pm the closer you are to 53 degrees North) which also means the whole of the USA will be under dark enough skies.

The season usually ends around early April this is because regions like Norway, Iceland simply do not get dark enough for us to see the aurora. However as long as where you are reaches Astronomical twilight ( Sun is sufficiently below the horizon) the skies are dark enough.

With solar maximum, the aurora will CONTINUE to drop further south than usual , so places like Wales, Southern England, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Ukraine, Slovakia will see more displays throughout summer.

Here’s some interesting stats for you, on any normal solar maximum period, we would expect around four G5 storms, the strongest where even in Spain we can see the aurora -- we have only had one of these so far in this cycle, (May 10th)

But here’s some really good news the next level down a Severe storm - G4 - we expect 100 of these - we have only had a few so far. With a G4 these are strong enough to be seen as far south as Italy still and overhead in the UK.

The solar maximum is only starting and here’s the thing, a lot of people are saying - the May 10th storm is a once in a lifetime thing - well, even if it was ( and I don’t believe it is) we should still have more incredible storms that will be visible in the UK and Europe.

I’ve seen the aurora more than 300 times all of them different- sometimes during ‘weak’ events they can really go wild, this is because as you all know now during storms you have fluctuations, the key is to be outside as it occurs when these mini bursts are underway - they can last only 15-20 mins but so worth it!

So things are getting really exciting and interesting and for the next few months for those really into aurora chasing - be prepared to head south to see them ☺️

Wishing us strong aurora and clear skies

“Your Monthly Look At All Things Science Fact & Science Fiction”

Blast off into the Podisphere with TGP NOMINAL, Your monthly look at all things Science Fact & Science Fiction. TGP NOMINAL is brought to you by the creative force behind the European Podcast Award nominated, The Garbage POD (TGP) podcast. We launched Episode 1.1 of TGP NOMINAL to coincide with World Space Week 2014 and it proved to be a success with the visitors to the World Space Week website.

We chose 'TGP NOMINAL' as the name of the podcast, because NOMINAL is a positive term used during rocket launches. Originally we wanted to call it “TGP Throttle Up” but we thought that it might be a bad omen and may also conjure up bad memories for some in the space community.

What can you expect from TGP NOMINAL? Well, we have two Podcasts. Our main show covers Space, Science, and Technology news along side news from the world of Sci-Fi, Comic-Cons and Gaming. Whether it be on the big screen, small screen or in print, we will cover it. At TGP NOMINAL we like to endorse S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Education, so we have been working along side a charity based astronomy group called 'UK Astronomy' who their founder 'Ross Hockham' has become our resident astronomer. So, on the first weekend of every month, we launch TGP NOMINAL Xtra into the Podisphere, where Ross comes on board to bring you his unique guide to the skies, for the month ahead. We also use TGP NOMINAL Xtra to bring you exciting content that won't keep until the next episode (for example interviews with TV Show Creators or Event Organisers, prior to the event or broadcast taking place). We are building a network of contributors who will be representing TGP NOMINAL at places of interest and social events, so we can bring you content from them. Since October 2016, we have been collaborating with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to bring our listeners amazing interviews with key personnel involved with their missions, and In 2020, The European Space Agency (ESA) will be coming on board also.
