Barcelona rival Chelsea for Fiorentina attacker Jovetic

Barcelona are interested in Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic.

Gazzetta dello Sport says Fiorentina management are planning a huge overhaul of their squad this summer after a dismal season - though Jovetic is regarded as safe.

The striker has been attracting enquiries from Chelsea since the New Year and now Barca have entered the transfer battle.

Fiorentina do not want to lose Jovetic, but the striker may be reluctant to go through another season of rebuilding.

Liberty coach escapes punishment for 'shoot-the-referee' comment

JE Sarpong has been told to apologize for his explosive comments about referees

Liberty Professionals coach J.E Sarpong has been let off the hook over comments which seem to justify the murder of referees.

The veteran trainer launched a scathing attack on referee Awal Mohammed following Liberty’s 2-2 Premier League draw at New Edubiase in the last round.

Sarpong was later hauled before the Ghana FA’s Ethics Committee for saying in his post match reaction: “I’m very much disappointed. The referees must back up in this country because I will not be surprised if one day a referee is shot down.”

The Ethics Committee however after its hearing on Tuesday says the experienced coach will not incur any further punishment other than a public apology.

“Coach Sarpong during the hearing admitted to his wrong doing and was very remorseful hence our decision not to punish him,” Ethics Committee chairman Nana Adjei-Ampofo told Kumasi-based Angel FM.

“He apologized to us but we have asked him to do same in public so we leave it at that.”

Dwarfs to play home fixture against Kotoko in Sunyani

Dwarfs captain Bismark Asiedu and his colleagues will play Kotoko at an adopted home ground

Ebusua Dwarfs will play their Ghana Premier League home match against Asante Kotoko on Sunday at the Sunyani Coronation Park.

The Cape Coast-based side will have to make the seven-hour journey by road for the week 21 fixture after their Robert Mensah Stadium was temporary closed down following crowd violence.

Fans of Dwarfs attacked and severely beat up referee Patrick Kyeremanteng and his two assistant two weeks ago.

They accused the Accra-based referee of biased officiating after he disallowed what could be have been a late equalizer in their 1-0 defeat against Aduana Stars.

The irate fans poured onto the pitch and subjected him and his two deputies, a journalist and security personnel to severe beatings.

The Premier League Board has since launched an investigation into the matter.

Hearts fans feel vindicated after referees chief's sacking

Hearts of Oak fans feel vindicated after the ethics committee recommended the removal of the Referees Appointment Committee chairman Osei Tutu Agyemang.

Agyemang, an Ashanti Regional FA chairman, was accused of abuse of power after his comments on a Kumasi-based radio station suggested he would use his position to help Asante Kotoko win this season’s league.

The supporters body of Hearts (National Chapters Committee) protested vehemently and began a campaign for his removal.

The voice recording was played back when he met the ethic committee on Tuesday and was charged with misconduct.

Agyemang has since been removed as chairman of the referees appointment committee.

”We stand for justice and we have received justice,” Alhaji Akanbi, NCC chairman, told Kumasi-based FOX FM.

“This is a word of caution for anyone who will come to succeed him because it is worrying to be cheated by referees.

“It tells the whole world what we are made of and that we understand football, we are on course.”

Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi says a new coach for the Black Stars will be swiftly named to ensure stability before the 2014 World Cup qualifiers start.

The leaders of the country’s federation insist a competent replacement will be found as Akwasi Appiah has been put in charge of the squad on temporary basis.

This comes after Serbian coach Goran Stevanovic was sacked from his position on Monday after failing to win the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana spent months in getting to the decision to hire Stevanovic after perusing the profiles of several coaches who applied for the post.

But with just three months before the start of the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup and with qualifiers for the 2013 Nations Cup due to start in September, Nyantakyi says a quick decision on the next coach is needed.

“The two competitions are very important,” Nyantakyi said.

“We need to work very hard to get a competent replacement who would get ample time to prepare the team prepare for the competitions.”

Ghana chose to dismiss the Serb with ten months left on his contract on Monday.

His downfall came after losing the 2012 Nations Cup semi-final to Zambia, the sole competitive defeat his side suffered during his reign.

Stevanovic, a former Yugoslav international and championship winning coach with Partizan Belgrade, was the third successive Serbian in charge of Ghana and had been expected to build on the work of compatriots Ratomir Dujkovic and Milovan Rajevac.

Although Ghana looked impressive in their qualifying campaign last year, they were unable to end a 30-year wait for Nations Cup success at the 2012 tournament co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
