Tribe Pictures Tribe produces institutional and corporate films that resonate and connect with people of shared interests and purpose – modern day tribes.

Veteran filmmaker, Vern Oakley (CEO and Executive Creative Director) founded Tribe Pictures in 1986 with a mission. He believed that he could help leaders and companies leverage the power of film and video to connect, in a deeply human way, to the people who matter, making them feel, give, act, change and mobilize. Tribe's mission is still and always will be to help our clients build and grow deep, enduring, successful connections with stakeholders (their tribe).

Are you an approachable leader?

How can you prove openness to people?

Talk to them.

For senior leaders, even though you can't schedule a one-on-one with every employee in your organization, you can still show your authenticity through video.

When we film with leaders, our primary goal is to help them send their message clearly. Part of that job is to make them comfortable, and help them show that behind the lens and under the mask, they’re a real person who wants to do right by their company and employees.

When your people know they can trust you, they'll embrace your new initiatives, be open to your big ideas, and work alongside you to accomplish your goals.

My career began in theater. I was an Off-Broadway director, cutting my way through the jungle of New York theater.

As a director, it was my job to coax honest and believable performances out of actors.

The relationship between a stage performer and a director is collaborative. Everyone comes into the room with different ideas about how to bring a character to life and with unique life experiences that can help inform the performance.

Directors ask their actors to be vulnerable and in return promise to create a supportive environment where mistakes are welcomed and risks are celebrated.

Improv is a dance of give-and-take. A great improv performer understands how to set up their scene partner for the next line. “Yes, and” is the motto, always taking what you’re given and adding more. Improv performers share “affordances”—details or confessions or claims that invite further exploration.

So when I transitioned toward making corporate videos, I took the same approach. How could I draw the best performances out of talent who had never performed before? Is there anyone too shy, too nervous, too boring to put on camera?

Any great interview doesn't just come down to asking the right questions. It's a matter of curating an environment where the interviewee feels comfortable taking off the mask of professionalism and sharing their honest humanity.

Whether I’m on-camera alongside them or an invisible guide off-screen, I reach back.

Before you begin any project, you need a plan. Video is certainly no exception.

Our method at Tribe starts with asking the right questions.

Who is your audience? How do you plan to reach them? What do you want them to do, think, say, feel, buy, or buy into? What communications challenge does this video solve? How can you show your company’s mission in action? Who are the right storytellers?

Don’t be surprised if your questions elicit answers you didn’t expect. When you begin with questions, you’re putting aside assumptions or expectations.

The curious, open mind is the best problem solver.

Leaders are often independent thinkers who carve their own path toward success.

But are you open to inviting outside experts in to solve your company’s communications challenges?

It can be as simple as realizing you don’t have to take on huge projects all by yourself.

That’s what corporate communications specialists do—they offer a helping hand to reach your goals.

Rather than delegation, working with a creative partner is more like shared brain power. Together, you can expand on ideas and carve the best path to success.

You’re making a corporate video. So you’re going to film it in your office…right?

Think about what your location can say about your video subject, without any actual words.

The end of 2024 gives us the chance to reflect.

What metrics do you use to measure your year?

The hours you worked, the tasks you checked off, the emails you fired off? That seems unlikely.

Our lives, just like our careers, are more than just the numbers.

The new year gives us the chance to look back on what really matters. It might be the friends we saw, the personal goals we reached, or the hobbies we explored. The experiences that make us feel human.

Looking forward to doing more of what we love, together, in 2025.

Wishing you a restful and restorative holiday, from our tribe to yours.

You don’t need a video—you need a solution to a corporate communications challenge.

What kind of communications challenges can video solve?

- You need to decrease employee turnover and strengthen team morale
- You need to convince stakeholders to invest in your idea—but your analytical jargon will put them to sleep
- Your new executive leader needs to make a connection with thousands of employees fast
- You hope to break a donation record on the first day of your fundraising campaign launch

All of these problems share a common factor: reaching the solution requires a human-to-human connection. When done correctly, video can build the relationships you need and serve your company for years to come.

Crafting an effective corporate video is a big task to handle on your own.

Here’s a few tasks that video production experts can take off your hands:

- Narrowing down the script (alongside the internal communications team) for direct and specific messaging
- Directing talent who aren’t public speaking professionals
- Capturing footage of your team and location that crafts a story
- Selecting music that sets the tone of your video (and doesn’t sound like an elevator soundtrack)
- Editing together a polished final video for as many platforms as you need

Over 84% of marketers say that video has helped them generate leads.

How's that for return on investment?

Video in an email can increase reply rates by up to 90% versus text alone (Vidyard)

Marketers who use video grow revenue 49% faster (Wordstream)

Video makes it faster and easier to convey your business proposition. With captions and translations, one video can be released globally.

Once you have your leads, personalized videos can maintain those relationships, any time, anywhere.

That's the power of video.

Want to stand out? Video is the differentiator.

A friend owns a sustainable goods shop in Boston:

She was recently accepted into a new business accelerator and mentorship program. Why her out of thousands of candidates?

She submitted a video with her application.

In just a few minutes, she was able to convey her business's vision and why she’s a worthy candidate for the program.

Video brought her brand to life, showcasing her passion, commitment, and potential in a way that words alone couldn’t capture. This visual approach set her apart, winning her that coveted spot.

Video is like going to a party.

Come late, leave early.

You want to arrive amid the action and sneak out before it gets boring.

Keep your viewer engaged by cutting out the fluff and getting right to the message.

When you've made your point, end your video. (Nobody wants to be stuck in a conversation with a rambler...)

Corporate communications aren’t one-size-fits-all.

Your favorite tailored suit isn’t going to fit the same way on anyone else.

And one message isn’t going to appeal to each of your audiences. They have different priorities, values, and concerns.

Knowing what your audience cares about most allows you to craft messages that resonate, inform, and persuade. And messages created with a specific audience in mind are more likely to drive engagement and achieve meaningful success.
