Tensions have escalated in the Cookie Plug Indianapolis controversy, with the brand taking an offensive stance against two well-known Indianapolis activists. These critics have led the charge against the newly opened restaurant, accusing it of anti-Black cultural appropriation.
In a post made today on the Cookie Plug social media page, the brand posted an image of two clowns with the caption, "Feeray Phillips / Jonathan Howe pulled up to support the grand opening. Exactly what I expected." Several comments criticizing the brand for taking this stance against local residents were made, but these were later deleted by Cookie Plug, which then limited who could respond to the post.
In an exclusive interview with Black Indy LIVE, Cookie Plug Founder Erik Martinez shared insights into his background and the brand's expansion nationwide. Martinez discussed his Puerto Rican roots, his inspiration from 50 Cent, his views on race relations, and whether he believes hip hop is truly "Black culture." He also expressed confidence that the city of Indianapolis will be "light work" compared to controversies his brand has faced in other cities, and why he hopes this current situation goes viral.
All this and more will be revealed in the full interview, releasing in a few days on Black Indy Live.
What do you think about this controversy? Has it gone too far? Was Cookie Plug in the wrong for making this post? What should happen next?
