14th McArthur National Race concluded; 14 pigeons clocked-in on time

Manila City, Philippines—A hard race could only describe the 14th McArthur National Race as humid air, cloudy skies and scattered rains combined with inclement weather resulted in what was considered a survival race as only nine birds from NCR, four from the North Sector and a solo flyer for the South Sector managed to clock on time, Sunday 30th March 2025.

Reminiscent of the first McArthur National Race of 2012 where only seven (7) birds clocked on time, the 14th McArthur saw only 14 birds from all three sectors making the 500 mpm speed cut-off.

NCR Sector’s Magic 9

First to clock is a blue check bird raced by Mark Esperas of the Esperas Brothers of Las Pinas City. Banded with an FPR ring and a McArthur ring ending in -3403, the fastest of the flock came swooping in at a speed of 666.302 mpm. The bird is a descendant of a Stephen Yang bird from Raffy Sinatin and Esperas’s own Lady Kuba line. A loft inspection made by the Racing Chairman Nelson Chua on March 30th and aired on his page (FB: Nelson Chua Pigeon Sport Page) confirmed the ownership and loft residency of the 14th McArthur National Race champion.

Third to clock but placing second after distance and speed computations is a blue bar c**k with a McArthur ring ending in -0750 of Peter Paul Antonio of WPFC. The young bird is of Drapa 509 x Fully Loaded line combination, a fortuitous combination of birds from Russel Baldago and Peter Paul Antonio himself. The winged athlete came in second at a speed of 596.548 mpm, closely followed by the third placer, a blue bar of Edwyn Chua of PHA, with ring ending at no.-4340 who swooped in at a speed of 595.406 mpm.

At fourth place is a KRPC banded, check patterned pigeon from Pasig City, clocking in at a speed of 580.231 mpm owned by Chit Sulayao. The bird, with McArthur ring no. ending in -0608 is a progeny on the dam side of Sulayao’s 2016 McArthur 11th placer “Palaspas”. He was followed by 5th placer Nelson Castro of PFC, whose check patterned hen with McArthur ring no. ending in -1070 clocked at a speed of 567.476 mpm.

To complete the roster at 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th place are: Joel Delos Reyes at 6th place with a blue bar pigeon with ring no. ending in -3269, followed by 7th placer, Quezon City’s Ramir Fajardo’s McArthur pigeon with ring no. ending in 6658. A first-time joiner, Fajardo’s blue bar pigeon of Anastacio “Jhun” Corpin origin was the fourth bird to come home, but had to clock all the way at the PHA’s headquarters in Sta. Mesa, Manila because of an error in texting format. At 8th place is a McArthur winner of the past two years, Ruben Ocampo of Navotas City whose BBCM banded pigeon, a light blue bar c**k with McArthur ring no. ending in -9909 gave him his third consecutive win. Finally, making the cut-off at a speed of 507.719 mpm is 9th placer Rodel Fernandez. The velvet T-check pigeon of with origin from the Bonakid Line, banded with an ARPCI and McArtrhur ring ending in no. -7621, and one of the seven entries entered by Fernandez, completed the roster of the NCR winners.

Four for the North and One for the South

The McArthur National Race North Sector was succeeded by fanciers from Bataan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, and Pampanga. BBC’s Gerlou Roxas (OceanaGold Loft) bird with a McArthur ring ending in no. -5155 clocked first among three other birds who made the cut-off. The velvet-colored hen with white flights come from a well-established line of Zaldy Garcia’s “Victor Lim” line on the dam side and of Kerby Chua’s Broken Wing x Grizzle 839 on the sire side. The three other winners are: Marlon P. Cruz (Bataan), Ian Glenn Cura (Tarlac) and Sai Santelices (Nueva Ecija); official announcement of winners for the North Sector will be done after loft inspection by the McArthur Racing Committee. (See update on ranking below)

McArthur South Sector championship, on the other hand, was won solely by a fancier from Calamba, Laguna. AIPRA’s Philip Jrell Dela Cruz, whose dark check patterned young hen banded with McArthur ring ending in no. -5144 proved to be well motivated to clock in time for the South Sector cut-off.

As of this writing, 13 out of 14 lofts have been inspected by the racing chairman and his committee—all 9 from NCR, one from the South Sector and three from the North Sector (Gerlou Roxas of Pampanga, Marlon Cruz of Bataan and Ian Glenn Cura of Tarlac). An official list of winners will be announced after all mandatory inspections have been made and the results deliberated by the McArthur National Race Committee.

The 14th McArthur National Race Peter Yap Cup was participated by 27 clubs including the Philippine Homing Pigeon Association, Inc. Loading to cut-off period was from 26-30 March 2025, with the release held at McArthur, Leyte at 6:35 AM of March 29, 2025. The McArthur National Race was first held on March 10-11, 2012 and was also known as the Peter Yap Cup in honor of the late PHA Chairman Peter Yap who envisioned a unifying race for all pigeon fancier club in the country. // Aileen van Amerongen for The Global Pigeon Fancier, with reports from Aaron Alday Claudio

Update as of 7:10pm, 02 April:

After loft and bird inspections by race chairman Nelson Chua, the North Sector winner rankings based on actual distance and speed are as follows:

1st- Marlon P Cruz (Bataan)
2nd- Gerlou Roxas (Pampanga)
3rd- Glenn Cura (Tarlac)
4th- Sai Santelices (Nueva Ecija)

As of 7pm, all winning lofts and birds have been inspected by racing chairman Nelson Chua with assistance of Uly Cruz.

The Cha in the Champion: A Tribute to the Legacy of Pigeon Sports Legend, Cham Tian Seng

by: A. Dabu-van Amerongen

There is no finer proof of one’s dedication to pigeons and the pigeon racing sport than showing up, every single day, old age and all. This is what Cham Tian Seng, Uncle Cha to many, has shown to many of us, time and time again.

It was pre-pandemic times and Uncle Cha was already past 90 years old. Without fail, as many fanciers, and past and present PHA office secretaries would recount, Uncle Cha would show up every day at the PHA Clubhouse to check on his pigeons, and to check on the club operations. Having been part of PHA for almost 60 years (since its inception in 1958 and its formal establishment in 1960), Uncle Cha’s old age simply won’t deter him from performing tasks for the club he was a founding member of.

A big wooden table to the right just opposite the club secretary’s cubicle would tell you that it was Uncle Cha’s. A chalk painting of him hangs on the wall, and a worn-out leather chair, his throne. On that table, Uncle Cha would go over the PHA’s accounts and ledgers to make sure the club’s finances are within operational limits. Such was the scene when we (myself together with Sir Jimi and Sir Nelson) arrived at the PHA Clubhouse to conduct an interview with Uncle Cha.

The legend of Uncle Cha has become synonymous with the impressive history of the Philippine Homing Pigeon Association (PHA). Of the many milestones he shared with the club, one that has greatly made an impact on the sport took place in the 60’s and the 70’s. Through perseverance and patience, and Uncle Cha’s initiative, PHA was able to import pigeons of excellent bloodlines suitable for long-distance racing. Among them, birds from Ko Nipius and Joseph van den Broucke, at the time when these legendary fanciers were also at the top of their race. Ko Nipius has just won the Barcelona race at 2nd place with a pigeon descending from the famed Zilvervosje line; while Joseph v.d. Broucke’s pigeons imported in the early 60’s became the basis of many legendary lines in the country. Any fancier who boasts of Ko Nipius or v.d. Broucke strains in their pigeon has Uncle Cha, among others, to thank for.

Uncle Cha has also steered many fanciers into the championship path with his knowledge and altruism. Sharing his valuable lines to those who ask (I’m sure many would smile at the memory of borrowing a bird or two from Uncle Cha’s loft for their breeding project, or those charming utterances of “Uncle Cha, pasingsing naman…) ; and imparting advice to those who seek wisdom through experience. His venture to find the best pigeons and to race them in the country has led many fanciers to discover strains and lines that works for them: Tommy de Vera’s first youngsters from PHA were gift birds from Uncle Cha; Tommy So and his Dewit-van Bunderen’s Steer and Zeemer lines purchases, which enabled to him build his family of long-distance birds were upon the advice of Uncle Cha, too; and Victor Lim’s famous pairing of Ko Nipius and Stichelbaut, as well as his discovery of the abilities of Joseph v.d.Broucke birds were also with the help and guidance of Uncle Cha.

Of the many contributions of Uncle Cha in the pigeon racing sports in the country, there is one that shines above all others: his undaunting dedication to show up, daily, at the PHA clubhouse for his beloved pigeons, his unwavering commitment to the PHA club, and his inspiring presence to any and all kalapatids who has asked an advice or two, shared chats and lunches, and those who had lovingly called him, “Uncle Cha”, "Tatay Cha".

We will miss you Uncle Cha, your practical advice, your affectionate laughter, and the pride we see in your eyes whenever we talk about racing pigeon history and sports. Thank you from our hearts to yours. May you rest in peace, and may we ever remember the legacy you have left with us. Salute!

The Global Pigeon Fancier

When the Global Pigeon Fancier Magazine started in 2014, our only aim at the time was to give insights into the Pigeon Industry and to the Pigeon Racing Sports. In the past four years that it has been in publication, our team has seen how the sport, the shows and the industry has developed to the status they are now. We are dedicated to help our fanciers improve their races, shows and their bloodlines, be it with racing homers or fancy pigeons. We believe that it is through unity, camaraderie, integrity, and informed fanciers that we will be able to boost the industry and the sports to something that we all can be proud of: a bastion of prestige, integrity, passion and excellence.

Now, we have improved our contents to further help our readers in their quest to enhance themselves and their pigeons. We have included a regular Special McArthur Issue that focuses on the most prestigious national race in the country. We have regularized the sections for Fancy Pigeons, News and Events and International News and Fanciers. We have also made sure that Pigeon 101, a section that will surely help newbies in the sport will be a well of knowledge as top pigeon fanciers help us develop the contents.

Our teams, like our readers, are dedicated to excel in what we do no matter the obstacles that come our way. We are glad of the support and assistance of our advisers, Mr. Jaime Lim, Doc AJ Ferre, Mr. Rico Nabong who have helped us (and continue to help us) with the contents to make it relevant, updated and practical for our readers.
