A note from our Editor in Chief, Edward Jensen:

Six years ago, I did a silly little podcast thing called The Downtown Phoenix Podcast. The only series was an eight-episode run that tried to capture some of the area’s history and stories. We talked about the renaissance of Hance Park, explored ways to get involved in central-city advocacy, and brought new voices to the table (one of whom is now an Arizona state legislator!).

Since 2014, I’ve frequently wanted to bring it back. I am definitely biased, I know, but it was an important project to bring these stories out of the shadows. But every time, there was always a hiccup that kept it from going.

In light of what’s happened to our community in this time of COVID-19 and social distancing, it’s certainly no understatement that things have fundamentally changed. That’s why I am going to bring back The Downtown Phoenix Podcast: to capture our stories from this time. It’s part podcast, but part collection of oral history.

This is going to be a team effort, however. Unlike the 2014 run of the Podcast, this isn’t going to be me talking all time time and offering my commentary essays on the relevant matters of the day. This is going to be about you. It’s going to be about our communities. What’s happening now? What are our fears for the moment? What are our hopes for the future?

If you or someone you know is a business owner, a community leader, an artist, or someone who’s life or livelihood has been upended in the past few weeks, get in touch with me. (Like the name of the Podcast suggests, the objective is to share stories from central-city Phoenix.) Email [email protected] or fill out the online form (in comments) to get in touch.

Thank you for your consideration!

We hope you enjoyed a wonderful coffee on today, .

The anticipation; the making; the enjoyment. Those three things are the same, whether it's critical thinking on Phoenix's own urban condition or making a good latte.

We wish you a wonderful and hope you mark the day with your own good coffee, whether it's made in your own kitchen or from a skilled barista at one of our own city's coffeehouses.

Wow. What a storm! Is everyone okay?

08/09/2014

If you thought that we had a lot of rain this morning, you'd be absolutely right. The National Weather Service in Phoenix issued this following record report: "...Record daily maximum rainfall set at Phoenix AZ... a record rainfall of 3.29 inch(es) was set at Phoenix Sky Harbor AZ today. This breaks the old record of 1.33 set in 1933. This rainfall record sets an all-time calendar day rainfall record previously set on September 4 1939 of 2.91 inch(es)."

We say THANK YOU

We say THANK YOU

This certainly is not a fun news item to share. After careful consideration, we have decided to stop production of new episodes of The Downtown Phoenix Podcast. Our final episode will be released on Wednesday July 23 and will feature excerpts of Edward Jensen's conversation with Jon Talton from March. When we set out to do the Podcast, we had one objective: to create a grand space for dialogue and action on issues vital to the urban resurgence in Phoenix. Our conversation set out to be in very high quality and something that made accessible the issues facing our community. After an eight-episode initial run, it became evident that while the Podcast is a great project and whose reception surpassed our wildest expectations, there are different and more creative ways to advance our mission of making Phoenix “the serious city.” To that end, our presenting firm (Edward Jensen urban productions) is working with community leaders and members of the urban academy on a new initiative. While we can't share too many details of that project at this moment, the work of the Podcast will certainly inform our work both here in Phoenix and wherever this new experiment goes. Rest assured that THE URBAN BOOK CLUB is still happening and we will share some news both on our website and on our page (facebook.com/downtownphoenixpodcast) when we have a venue and specific meeting dates. We will keep our current set of episodes online at least through the end of 2014 and probably longer. Our website will continue to be updated with news about this and kindred projects. Do stay subscribed to the Podcast's feed in iTunes or whatever podcast receiving app you use because we will be releasing small vignettes and announcements as required there. And, please check out our host's website and blog at edwardjensen.net for the latest essays and commentary on urban issues. Thank you for your support of the Podcast…and stay tuned for what's to come. We am excited and we hope you will be, too.
