Archives Archives is Butler University's first entertainment and literary humor magazine. "Nothing but the best. We are Archives." Sometimes it can make us sad.

Dear Reader,

Entertainment can be monkeys flinging poo at each other. It can be Pauly D combing his hair or pregnant post-ops flashing on the Maury Povich Show. Entertainment can consist of watching comedians like Chris Rock or Sar

ah Palin. But entertainment doesn’t have to be humorous, at least not all the time. Other times it can make us dance. It points out our flaws. It brings us together in unlikely ways. Occasionally, it drives us to think, on deeper levels, about our language, our culture, and our places in the world. It motivates us to do something about the genocide of blue eight-foot-tall aliens. It makes us want to imitate midgets with dreadlocks and gold teeth rapping about Bugattis and hoes. Entertainment is in the cinema, on television, in the auditorium, in the football stadium, in our conversations, in the shower surveillance cameras, in books, in magazines such as this. What motivates us stop our shopping carts, stare at the tabloids, and wonder “Is Brad Pitt really gay?” Why do we listen so attentively to the stuff coming out of a friend’s mouth, the juicy stuff, the stuff that makes us ask “And then what happened?” Why do we flip to the comics of a newspaper, or to our horoscopes, or perhaps to the movie reviews? Why do we read (or look at) gossip magazines? Why do we all love Twilight? Why do we skip over CNN and turn to Fox News instead? The answers to these questions are unknown. Perhaps it is in our DNA to be amused, to love the absurd, to escape from work and studies. By the way, thank you for picking up the inaugural issue of Archives. It is with pleasure that we, the editors, introduce to you Butler University’s first humor and entertainment magazine. This issue does not contain a cohesive theme in its short stories, poems, artwork or photography. It does not adhere to guidelines of a literary magazine, although in some ways it may (or will in the near future). Think of this issue as a hodge-podge of things to temporarily remove you from a mundane existence: maybe you will laugh, or cry, or smile, or learn something new. Whatever the case, our goal is to produce the material you turn to, not the material you skip. It’s hard to explain, in words, what this “thing” is. Just open it and look through. Everything grows over periods of time. This issue is only a seed. Archives would not have been possible without the support of a devoted and creative team of writers, inspirational professors, and the SGA. But without you, faithful reader, Archives would have no purpose at this institution, no genuine motivation to entertain. We are always open to feedback, submissions, or just hearing what you have to say. This is your magazine as much as it is ours. Help us make it blossom. Enjoy,

Dear Reader,

I second everything that was said. I hope we have taken that seed that was the inaugural issue of Archives and done well with it. We are still growing in nearly every way - we're a sapling, if you will. I hope our issues still bring you smiles, laughs, sentimental moments, and pondering thoughts. We look forward to what's ahead. We're still always open to feedback, submissions, and chats. They help keep us growing. Best Wishes,

Melissa Rangel
2012-2013 Editor-in-Chief
