â Did you come out of personal conviction or are you from Germany?â was the question German Jews were asked when they arrived in Palestine in 1933. Few came out of conviction. The majority of 60,000 German Jews who took refuge in the then British mandate came because they had no other option. Pal....

NEW VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON EVENT:

"When Neutra Met Brains and Buildings"

Saturday, November 5th at 1PM Pacific

In 1954, Richard Neutra (1892–1970) wrote a prescient book, "Survival Through Design," in which he synthesized his experience as an architect and as someone who had experienced the first half of the 20th century in both Europe and the United States, and his reflections on insights from physiology, broadly conceived. He set our ways in which most humans must plan and design to ensure the survival of the human race.

The Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design (NISTD) has invited Michael Arbib, author of "When Brains Meet Buildings: A Conversation Between Neuroscience and Architecture" to recount his experience reading the book and reflecting on how well it stands up in light of 70 years of advances.

This Zoom program is free. Send a reservation email to [email protected] with "Brains" In the subject line and if you want to attend virtually or in-person in Silver Lake.

The Zoom link will be sent once confirmation is received.

Richard Neutra's landmark Kaufmann House features prominently in the new film, 'Don't Worry Darling', directed by Olivia Wilde.

"The location helped the cast and crew better understand the spaces the film would inhabit, both production and storywise. 'In order to shoot in the Kaufmann House, we had to come to set with the utmost respect,' says [production designer] Byron. 'Sometimes [on film sets] people kind of lose the plot and forget where they are. With the Kaufmann House, everyone was very aware of where we were, and that carried throughout the film. Anytime we were in any space, we wanted to treat it as if it was a celebrity itself.'

"[Location manager] Baugh agrees, saying, 'Everything about that house is spectacular. It’s what you feel when you’re walking through the hallway. It hits you at an emotional level that’s deeper than aesthetics; you’re feeling sensations that have a visceral impact. I can’t even describe it, but the Kaufmann House has it. It’s a very special space, and it was an honor to be there'."

Richard Neutra's 'Survival Through Design', his most influential published work, will be reissued in an extensively illustrated edition with critical apparatus by Atara Press in 2023, with a new introduction by architectural historian and Neutra scholar, Dr. Barbara Lamprecht and words from Dr. Raymond Neutra.

"If the author of the original text writes a rough-edged prose that deliberately disregards some conventional rules of grammar and syntax, to smoothen out the rough edges would mean drowning out the author’s authentic voice. The translator must instead, stretch the possibilities of her language to accommodate that voice. In the process, she might even enrich her language.

"Walter Benjamin says, 'The opportunity offered by translation is not a defensive one: to preserve, to embalm, the current state of the translator’s own language. Rather, it is an opportunity to allow a foreign tongue to influence and modify the language into which a work is being translated'."

Why Japan? In Fifty Sounds, Polly Barton attempts to exhaust her obsession with the country she moved to at the age of 21.
From min-min, the sound of air screaming, to jin-jin, the sound of being touched for the very first time, from hi’sori, the sound of harbouring ma*****st tendencies, to mote-mote, the sound of becoming a small-town movie star, Fifty Sounds is a personal dictionary of the Japanese language, recounting her life as an outsider in Japan. Irreverent, humane, witty and wise, Fifty Sounds is an exceptional debut about the quietly revolutionary act of learning, speaking, and living in another language.

"'Language isn’t just a means of communication,' the writer and translator Sinan Antoon has said. 'It’s a reservoir of memory, tradition, and heritage.' As conduits between two cultures, translators take on an inherently political project. They must figure out how to make, for instance, a thirteenth-century Persian poet comprehensible to a contemporary American audience.

"Jawid Mojaddedi is now in the midst of a years-long project to translate all six books of the 'Masnavi.' Three of them have been published; the fourth is due out this spring. His translations acknowledge the Islamic and Koranic texts in the original by using italics to denote whenever Rumi switches to Arabic. His books are also riddled with footnotes. Reading them requires some effort, and perhaps a desire to see beyond one’s preconceptions. That, after all, is the point of translation: to understand the foreign."

Rumi is often called a mystic, a saint, an enlightened man. He is less frequently described as a Muslim.
