Srinagar: Amid curfew and shutdown, a man injured in government forces ‘action’ at Kupwara district of north Kashmir last week succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday here at SMHS, taking the death toll to 50 during ongoing unrest after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzzafar Wani.
55 year old, Ghulam Muhammad, son of Abdul Sattar, resident of Khumriyal was according to his family ‘ruthless beaten’ by government forces last week on Friday at Khumriyal Kupwara after an incident of firing on protesters and today he breathed his last at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar.
“After he heard gunshots, he rushed out of his house to look for his son and in the meantime, he was caught by forces and thrashed ruthlessly. After battling for his life for almost a week, he succumbed today,” his family said. However, the SSP Kupwara, Aijaz Bhat, said the deceased man was ‘caught in stampede’.
Soon after people at SMHS came to know about the death of the slain, they staged pro-freedom and anti-India protests and took out the body of the man in procession upto Kak Sarai Chowk. The protesters were however not intercepted by police or CRPF deployed there. With the death of another man, the death toll has climbed to 50.
Meanwhile, the shutdown and curfew entered 12th day on Wednesday while certain areas of Valley witnessed stone-pelting clashes. A group of women took out a protest rally from Sopore while at several places on the call of pro-freedom leadership black flags were hoisted including at SMHS Hospital.
The Old City, Maisuma and Batamaloo areas here continue to remain under severe restrictions here while rest of the city observed a complete shutdown. The major parts of north and south Kashmir also remained under curfew and shutdown today but there was no major incident of violence so far. All kinds of commercial and educational activities including commercial remained halted in all districts of the Valley.
The newspapers for the fifth consecutive day failed to hit stands in Kashmir Valley due to government gag. The mobile phone services and internet also remained shut while only BSNL postpaid is working. The authorities have already made it clear that the cellular services would be restored only after there is a sign of improvement in situation.
Meanwhile, the newspaper editors today met Chief Minister Mehbooba M***i and after apology by government the editors decided to resume publications from today.
