Happy Pride Weekend! However way you choose to celebrate, continue to uplift each other and educate yourselves on the history of Pride. We need each other more than other, and remember that it is because of black and brown transgender people that we are able to live as who we are. The fight continues.

Dear Kubo Community,

Silence is NOT an option. We do not stand for anti-blackness within the Filipinx community. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery are the result of police brutality perpetuated by white supremacy. Countless other innocent Black lives have been taken but haven't received national attention.

Our duty as Kubo is to bring attention to the crisis that is currently unfolding. We’d like to uplift the voices within our community:

Krizzia Yanga shared, “For Filipinx-Americans, talking about anti-blackness and racism with our immigrant family members can be challenging, but it’s our job as allies to start dismantling anti-blackness at home and in our own communities.” https://www.facebook.com/krizziapyanga/posts/10217478455140035

JC De Vera shared, “I cannot stand idly by seeing my Filipino community exalt and idolize basketball and Black athletes. Find inspiration from Black artists and culture to translate into their own dance and song. Yet at the same time, do all they can to keep out of the sun for fear of getting dark, whiten their brown skins, and implore their children to not date or befriend anyone Black. You cannot have it both ways.“ https://www.facebook.com/jcdevera/posts/10158065326401265

We’re also encouraged by the dialogue we see happening within our own families (see Professor Anthony Ocampo’s tweet here): https://twitter.com/anthonyocampo/status/1267870135013933056

We encourage everyone to research and donate to organizations that are organizing with our communities in mind. We also encourage you to engage locally and to critically analyze the broken systems in place that are harming Black communities.

We’re including only a few orgs below but there are many out there:

From Carlos Bulosan, “America is in the Heart” -

"The old world is dying, but a new world is being born. It generates inspiration from the chaos that beats upon us all. The false grandeur and security, the unfulfilled promises and illusory power, the number of the dead and those about to die, will charge the forces of our courage and determination. The old world will die so that the new world will be born with less sacrifice and agony on the living….”

To our Black friends, family, and community - we fight alongside you.

"Usapang Lalaki (UL or literally, 'Boy Talk') is a series of talks that discusses gender issues like toxic masculinity and feminism . . . They are working to rid the Philippines of the machismo that’s embedded in its culture. Not by 'cancelling' these men and calling them trash, as is the trend today, but by doing something much harder — listening."

Not by "cancelling" them online, but through face-to-face conversations about toxic masculinity and feminism.

If it's December and you're Filipino, you've already been celebrating Christmas for months. No one celebrates the Christmas season for longer... or with as much enthusiasm.

"In the Philippines, due to a long history of colonization and culture adoption due to necessity, I often felt uncertain of my cultural identity. In a predominantly white town, and now university, where there is almost no expectation for a white person to be heavily connected to their culture, I was often put on the spot for being Filipino because it must be so different, and I must be so proud."

"This is our second year…our main tagline with the event is ‘building sisterhood in the hustle.’ The root of everything we do is rooted in Pinay-ism…which basically just means a sisterhood. We tell everyone that there’s no way we can help each other in business if we can’t be there for each other as sisters first."
