China's Tianhe-2 supercomputer could hit 100 petaflops in 2015, may have a race on its hands (Engadget)

China's supercomputer development is as much driven by national reputation as by military prowess and science; the country chose to build the Sunway BlueLight MPP with domestic chips knowing that it wouldn't get the absolute performance crown. It won't be quite so modest the next time around. China's National University of Defense Technology wants the Tianhe-2 supercomputer due in 2015 to crack an extremely high 100 petaflops, or five times faster than the record-setting Titan over in the US and a whopping 40 times faster than the Tianhe-1A. Before we hand the crown over, though, Top 500 supercomputer chart keeper Jack Dongarra notes to _ITworld_ that China might have to sprint if it wants the symbolic title: the EU, Japan and US are all striving for the same benchmark, and they're not backing off anytime soon. The nation's trump card may have to be long-term plans for an exaflop-strength supercomputer by 2018, at which point we suspect the bragging will simmer down. For awhile. Sony cuts Q2 2012 losses to $198 million, bumps revenue 2 percent to $20.6 billion (Engadget)

After losing a whopping $5.7 billion last year and $312 million last quarter, Sony's recent austerity measures seeming to be paying off -- the company lost only $198 million in Q2. The company's been madly restructuring since CEO Kazuo Hirai came on board last year, and recently shuttered a lens plant in Japan while moving its mobile HQ from Sweden to Tokyo. Altogether, 10,000 jobs cuts are projected this year by Sony order to stanch the red ink, and it looks like it's started to pay off. _Developing..._ Filed under: Cellphones, Desktops, Cameras, Home Entertainment, Tablets, Sony Sony cuts Q2 2012 losses to $198 million, bumps revenue 2 percent to $20.6 billion originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 02:23:00 EDT. Resident Evil 6, Dragon's Dogma propel Capcom to record first half of fiscal 2013 (Joystiq)

Capcom reported operating income of 6.5 billion yen ($81.6 million) for the first half of its fiscal 2013 (April 1 through September 30), up 134.2 percent from last year. Overall, Capcom claimed that "sales and income for this 6 months period broke the record at all levels for the first half." The success is attributed to two games which have done better in sales than in reviews, one being _Resident Evil 6_, of which Capcom had already shipped 3.7 million units to retailers by the end of the half, in advance of its October release date. Yes, one of the best-selling games of the period, from Capcom's perspective, had not yet been released during the period. That's why we're always clear to identify "shipped" versus "sold," if you're playing along at home. The other big seller is _Dragon's Dogma_, which became a million seller in Capcom's "more profitable domestic market" of Japan despite less success outside of Japan. Capcom's social games, including a Monster Hunter card game, _Resident Evil Outbreak Survive_, and the Beeline games _The Smurfs' Village_ and _Snoopy's Street Fair_ also contributed. First Drive: 2013 Toyota Avalon [w/video] (Autoblog)

Filed under: Sedan, Toyota, First Drives, Luxury _A Case Study In Judging A Book By Its Cover_ Toyota has turned over something of a new leaf with its 2013 Avalon. For the last few decades, Japan's largest automaker has shown a face that could best be described as practical, reliable and a bit dull - the same side of the leaf that's been staring consumers in the face with products like the 2013 Camry and Corolla. Popular nameplates, no doubt, but since Toyota's history is filled with such stylish, sporty and iconic models as the 2000GT, MR2, rear- wheel-drive AE86 Corolla and, of course, the late, great Supra that we last saw in 2002, ardent followers of the brand have had little to feel excited about. With such a checkered past, it's no surprise that company CEO Akio Toyoda has called upon his employees to once again design and build cars with a sense of passion. The 2013 Avalon and Avalon Hybrid - Toyota's flagship models in the ultra-important United States market - are the first new vehicles, Toyota says, to come from that rekindled bucket of excitement. We should note that this notion has raised ...Share With Friends: | '"Japan"' News, RSS Feeds and Widgets via Feedzilla.

SEMA: Subaru WRX and WRX STI Special Editions hit SEMA just in time for Halloween (Autoblog)

Filed under: SEMA Show, Sedan, Performance, Japan, Subaru, Design/Style Subaru has pulled back the curtain on a pair of 2013 WRX and WRX STI Special Edition models ahead of their debut at the 2012 SEMA Show, which kicks off today in Las Vegas. Each car bows with a unique orange and black color scheme that carries over into the cabin. With black wheels, badges and side mirrors, it should easy to pick these machines out of a crowd. Indoors, designers have graced both sedans with a black headliner and the seats feature orange contrast stitching. Mechanically, the Special Edition models remain unchanged from their more ordinary counterparts, which means buyers will enjoy 265 horsepower from the WRX and 305 ponies from the more muscular WRX STI. Even so, the flashy paint and trim might be enough to drag buyers to the showroom - if you count yourself among that crowd, best get to getting. Rumormill: 2014 Mazda6 to spawn coupe and Mazdaspeed variants? (Autoblog)

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Japan, Mazda, Russia Word has it Mazda may be mulling a return to the coupe market with a two-door version of its shapely new Mazda6. _Auto Express_ cites unnamed sources as saying the car will bow at the Moscow Motor Show next year and will likely feature the 2.2-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine found in the sedan. Good for 173 horsepower, that mill can hustle the four-door to 60 mph in under 7.8 seconds. But Mazda may also turn out a quicker MPS trim (read: Mazdaspeed) when it comes to the coupe, complete with a turbocharged gasoline four cylinder with upwards of 260 hp. According to the report, there's also some indication the MPS version of the coupe will bow with an all-wheel drive system borrowed from the CX-5 crossover. Both products share basic architecture, theoretically making it easier to swap parts between the two. _Auto Express_ says the two door could bow as early as 2014 with the high-performance variant following along shortly thereafter. Official: Ford tumbles to second worst in Consumer Reports reliability survey, list dominated by Japanese [w/video] (Autoblog)

Filed under: Acura, Ford, Honda, Lexus, Mazda, Scion, Subaru, Toyota It's no secret that MyFord Touch has had its share of problems since being introduced, but the most recent reliability survey from _Consumer Reports_ shows just how much this infotainment system has affected Ford. Just two years ago, the automaker was in the top 10 for the institute's reliability rankings, but since then, it has tumbled to the second-lowest rung just above dead-last Jaguar. In addition to MyFord Touch, CR also attributes a handful of new products that have had issues right out of the gate. Compiled from 1.2 million subscriber surveys, this year's auto reliability survey heavily favors Japanese automakers, with eight of the 10 spots hailing from Japan. Toyota brands grabbed the top three spots (Scion, Toyota and Lexus - in that order) with Mazda, Subaru, Honda and Acura filling the next four spots. The only non-Asian automaker cracking the top 10 was Audi at number eight. Audi climbed a total of 18 spots from last year, and Cadillac and GMC round out this year's top gainers breaking into the top 15. Helping Cadillac's upward movement, the CTS Coupe was named the most reliable ...Share With Friends: | '"Japan"' Stories, RSS and RSS Feed via Feedzilla.

Hurricane Sandy might be making her unwelcome tour of the Eastern Seaboard, but that won't abate Google's new product launch. It's announcing the Nexus 10, a 10.1-inch tablet (that _appears_ to be based on the similarly-sized Galaxy Tab 2 10.1) that'll top out the company's range of in-house flagships. While Google's Andy Rubin hasn't gone into extreme detail just yet, he has said that it'll be packing a 2,560 x 1,600, 300 ppi display. The device promises to crank out nine hours of continuous video playback and 500 hours of standby, with a pair of front-facing stereo speakers and, best of all, Android 4.2. Those specifications match those that were leaked late last week, which also stated that we can expect to find a dual-core, Cortex A15-based, 1.7GHz Samsung Exynos 5250 inside. Keep looking, and we'll see 2GB of RAM, NFC, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 5-megapixel, rear-facing camera. BMW recalling 7 Series over inadvertently opening doors (Autoblog)

Filed under: Sedan, Recalls, Safety, BMW, Luxury There are 7,485 BMW 7 Series sedans involved in a recall over a software glitch that can cause the sedan's doors to open unintentionally "due to road or driving conditions or occupant contact with the door." The issue was discovered in Japan in 2007, covering cars from the 2005 to 2007 model years, and it led to a recall there that same year. Just after the Japanese recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked about the matter in the U.S., to which BMW responded that it would issue a service bulletin and that during a general software update for the car, the code dealing with the door issue would also be rectified. Four years on, in 2011, when NHTSA asked about the matter again, BMW said that up to 80 percent of the cars had got the new software. After meeting with the German company earlier this year over the door matter and others, a recall is being made official. Check out the recall notice from NHTSA below. Amateur astronomer Allen Epling is an avid lover of the skies. But did his latest discovery mark the true existence of life outside of Earth? Epling told WSAZ News that he recorded hours of footage involving a glowing object which left him, and thousands of people across the U.S., stumped and in shock. Wondering aloud if he had just seen a UFO, the government is saying that it may have simply been a giant toy which costs just $25. The cigar- shaped airship was viewed across three states, prompting many calls to the local authorities, yet Epling maintains that it was a UFO. "It wasn't anything I recognized. Definitely not an airplane, and I've never seen a helicopter that looked like that," Epling told WSAZ News. "It looked like two fluorescent bulbs, side by side, parallel, shining very brightly." "It would get so bright they would seem to merge, and you could see it very clearly with the naked eye. Then it would dim down almost invisible." The mass excitement hit across many UFO-spotting websites, prompting theories to be put forward as to what it actually was. Calcium reveals connections between neurons (MIT)

A team led by MIT neuroscientists has developed a way to monitor how brain cells coordinate with each other to control specific behaviors, such as initiating movement or detecting an odor. The researchers’ new imaging technique, based on the detection of calcium ions in neurons, could help them map the brain circuits that perform such functions. It could also provide new insights into the origins of autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other psychiatric diseases, says Guoping Feng, senior author of a paper appearing in the Oct. 18 issue of the journal _Neuron_. “To understand psychiatric disorders we need to study animal models, and to find out what’s happening in the brain when the animal is behaving abnormally,” says Feng, the James W. and Patricia Poitras Professor of Neuroscience and a member of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. “This is a very powerful tool that will really help us understand animal models of these diseases and study how the brain functions normally and in a diseased state.” Lead author of the _Neuron_ paper is McGovern Institute postdoc Qian Chen. Performing any kind of brain function requires many neurons in different parts of the brain to communicate with ...Share With Friends: | '"Japan"' Stories, RSS and RSS Feed via Feedzilla.

Brazilian Woman Auctions Off Virginity For $780,000 (Vibe)

And this is what our world has come to... A Brazilian woman auctioned her V card for several weeks only for a Japanese man to come out on top (ahem) with the winning bid of $780,000 smackeroos. Sweet deal? Apparently so since the auction is all part of Australian filmmaker Justin Sisely's latest project that he says has taken him over two years to work on. His brilliant idea was to craft "a document made for the 21st century," in which a man and woman offer their virginity online to the highest bidder, while a camera follows them through the entire project, TIME reports. He aborted the mission when he ran low on funds and decided to take it from his home state Nevada abroad where he plucked 20-year-old Catarina Migliorini from Brazil and 23-year-old Alex Stepanov from Russia. As the doc nears its completion, the two have flown to Indonesia where the virgins were deflowered by Migliorini's top bidder, Natsu of Japan with a bid of $780,000 and Stepanov's doer who pledged an underwhelming $3,000. VW Up! says "What closed market?" by recording 3,000 Japanese orders in 3 weeks (Autoblog)

Filed under: Budget, Japan, Hatchback, Volkswagen The initial prognosis for the Volkswagen Up! in Japan is going the same direction as the name of the car: three weeks after launch, 3,000 orders have been placed in Nippon. That beats Ford's sales total for the entire year and is almost a month's worth of BMW imports. Posting those numbers, Japan's _Nikkei_ newspaper says the Up! "may beat the Golf subcompact to become the German automaker's most successful new-car launch in Japan." The backdrop to this is that European and US automaker groups have been protesting what they see as barriers to the Japanese auto market, with many wary of entering into free trade agreements with the island nation. To put some numbers to it, VW led the table for share of the import market through September of this year, with 18 percent and 41,971 cars sold. That, however, is in a market expected to be worth 4.3 million cars this year, which would put VW at 1.3 percent of the total if the numbers before the Up! range's launch held steady. VW outsells GM in China for first time in 8 years (Autoblog)

Filed under: Car Buying, China, GM, Volkswagen, Earnings/Financials, Skoda In case you didn't know, Volkswagen is hell-bent on becoming the largest automaker in the world. The German carmaker has inched closer to that goal, having outsold General Motors in China last quarter for the first time in eight years. Volkswagen's sales in China, its largest marker, increased by 21 percent last quarter to 704,991 units. Those numbers almost tripled GM's third-quarter growth, and were enough to beat out the American automaker's 664,765 sales. GM, however, still leads in year-to-date sales in China by a slim margin of around 77,000 units. The Asian nation also happens to be GM's largest market, and according to the report in _Automotive News_, China's car market may grow to be larger than the US, Japan and Germany combined in three years' time. Official: Harley-Davidson Museum opens tsunami motorcycle exhibit (Autoblog)

Filed under: Motorcycle Ikuo Yokoyama was just one man among hundreds of thousands of people directly affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in 2011, but his name will likely resonate with motorcycle enthusiasts for some time. Yokoyama's 2004 Harley-Davidson FXSTB Softail Night Train was in a container box that was swept away during the tsunami in March 2011, and it washed up on the shore of British Columbia where it was discovered almost a year later. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is a giant download on Wii U (Joystiq)

It's a good thing the Wii U supports external USB hard drives, because downloading _Tekken Tag Tournament 2_ will eat up half of a Premium's onboard storage, and will be impossible on the stock Basic model. The downloadable version of _Tekken Tag Tournament 2_ will take up 16.7 GB of space, Namco Bandai revealed. It's currently unclear how much of that storage is reserved for Star Fox costumes. The eShop version will also be cheaper in Japan: ¥6,280 ($79) versus ¥6,980 in stores. This differs from the 3DS eShop, where games are priced similarly to their retail versions; Nintendo of America hasn't announced any pricing details for the Wii U eShop.
